05.01.2022 I'm not usually one to post on Facebook like this, but the recent story on Today Tonight really got under my skin, as a designer, and as a design advocate. Before I begin, I would like to clarify that I am all for accessible design and affordable luxury (my brand, as well as my own home are founded in this principle, but always with alternatives like antique and second hand finds which are often the same price as discount stores). 1. Firstly, it is disappointing to see that d...iscount retailers are being given airtime for mass produced, and often poorly manufactured goods instead of locally made and definitively superior furniture and crafts, which when all things considered can be just as attainable to most given the right value placed upon them. I don't deny that Kmart and other stores have a place in the market, however it doesn't help to carry the message of authentic design for our local makers when they are not mentioned as an alternative source of interesting and we'll crafted goods. 2. The second issue I would like to raise is the fact that the story featured self-proclaimed 'kmart mummies' and yet did not attempt to engage or interview an actual design professional in any way for the piece. Designers and professional decorators struggle enough in this country to demonstrate their value in the market, let alone be disregarded in preference for 'savvy shoppers' who when asked to provide decorating tips malign the profession and give unhelpful and frankly misguided information. The mass media needs to be more mindful of the messages that they portray to the general public, and the dilution that occurs of an entire suite of professions that have trained for years to be able to practice their craft in a thoughtful, effective and meaningful way.
