25.01.2022 HORMONAL HEALTH It may surprise you but when addressing hormonal health, I look at the gut! One of the major functions of the digestive system is clearing toxins through bowel motions. Our liver detoxifies chemicals, toxins and hormones from the bloodstream and then feed these toxins through to the digestive system to clear the waste.... If I address hormonal imbalance without working on the gut, there is a good chance the detoxified hormones may stay in the digestive tract and not be eliminated. The longer they stay put, the higher the chance they will be recirculated and lead to hormonal excess in the body (AKA symptoms!!). My first point of call is to ensure the gut is working well, the liver is detoxifying correctly, bowel motions are regular and there is no microbiome imbalances which may cause the hormones to be recirculated. Then the hormonal investigation begins!

24.01.2022 If you are making the conscious choice to increase your fibre (after my post from yesterday) you will need to increase your water content also! Have you ever left chia seeds to soak in water and returned to a gel like mass? That can happen in our guts if we are not flushing the water through regularly and this can lead to constipation. Not liking drinking water at the moment with the cooler weather?... Herbal tea accounts for your water content (non-caffeinated variety) or perhaps drinking your water warm could be an option? 22.01.2022 I get asked all the time what is the best diet for gut healing? Short answer is there isn’t one diet that suits everyone and this is the same for gut healing: it is dependent on symptoms, length of duration, food sensitivities, the root cause of your gut symptoms and how your body responds to it.... In a clinical setting, every client is given a very different diet based upon the way they currently eat, their symptoms, functional testing results, food intolerances, how they digest food and the severity of symptoms. I am not the biggest fan of giving prescriptive diets so many of my diet recommendations are based upon a diet with additional tweaks to suit the individual. On our blog, we have discussed some of the most common gut healing diets and what they are helpful and how they can be challenging or their shortcomings. Head over and have a read! https://www.naturological.com.au//the-facts-on-gut-healing

19.01.2022 Our gut and immune system work closely together. Our community of gut bacteria communicate regularly with our immune system; they are like good neighbours, always checking in with each other and ensuring each other is ok. A lot of our immune system is centred around the digestive system so if our gut is not performing well, our immune system is also affected. Ways we can support our digestive system and inadvertently our immune health include:... - Eating a fibre rich diet with plenty of fruit and veggies - Reducing inflammatory foods such as excessive caffeine and alcohol, refined sugar and trans fats - Avoid overeating - Being mindful when eating, slow down and enjoy - See a practitioner if struggling with bloating, abdominal pain, reflux, constipation or diarrhoea

Remove from oven and leave to cool 8. Cut or snap the crackers into your desired shape/size Let me know if you give them a try!

19.01.2022 What can you do today to assist with your stress? Everyone at the moment is experiencing a little more stress, feeling more pressure especially with Lockdown 2.0 in Melbourne. Yesterday I made the decision to rearrange my schedule for the week to reduce my stress levels. ... The reason for doing this was that I was feeling guilty when I sat down to work that there was always cleaning or washing or cooking to be done so I was trying to do it all at the same time and not really achieving much. This led to further guilt, when I was cleaning and cooking as I was stressing about not working on my business. As you can imagine this wasnt productive to either my work or my home. So now I have a schedule of what days I prioritise work and what days are for sorting out the home office AKA my home. Today I have woken up feeling less guilty, lighter and feeling like I can achieve what I need to this week and it feels great! I feel like I have permission to focus on one task and to do it without stress. What about you? What can you do today to lower your stress levels even slightly?

18.01.2022 I get asked all the time about which diet is best for healing the gut. It’s a complex question as there is no one size fits all, it’s very individualised. 15.01.2022 Wondering if you need some gut healing in the new year? Here are some of the basics you need to consider when it comes to healing your gut: 1. Does your gut need support?... Not everyone’s gut needs healing. Some questions you need to ask include: Do you have any digestive symptoms such as bloating, indigestion, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain? Do some of the associated systems need support: immune, skin, hormones, mood? 2. Test, don’t guess. Testing gives us specific individualised information and takes the guess work out of the equation. Generic gut healing can be beneficial for some but not for everyone. 3. Drink more water. Water helps your digestive system and supports stool consistency. Too little water can lead to constipation and irregular bowel function. 4. Fibre is your friend. Prebiotic fibre is the food for your gut bacteria, which have a huge impact not only on the digestive system but of your body overall. Happy gut bugs, makes for a healthy digestive system! Fibre sources include: veggies, fruit and whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds. 5. Regular meal times. Regular meal times with breaks between meals gives the digestive system time to digest and recover between meals. 6. Eat more bitter foods. Bitter is not a popular taste and therefore is often overlooked. Bitters stimulate your digestive juices and also support your liver function. 7. Veggies are key. Vegetables are little powerhouses: not only are they packed with fibre, but they are also full of micronutrients which are necessary not only for digestive function but also for the body as a whole. 8. Investigate your Food Intolerances. If you notice that food exacerbates your gut, it is worthwhile doing the investigation. Not all food intolerances are bad foods, quite often they can be healthy foods that are not agreeing with your body at that point in time. Investigating the foods involved and undertaking a gut healing process can be of benefit. 9. Increase Anti-inflammatory foods. Some foods that reduce inflammation include: turmeric, ginger, oily fish such as salmon, sardines. Want some gut healing? Book a 15 min chat via our bio.

15.01.2022 These are some of the reviews of our best selling tea, Sleep. 15.01.2022 Vitamin D is a nutrient that is key to our immune system but in Melbourne it can be a little challenging to acquire. Our position from the equator means that we do not absorb any vitamin D from the suns rays from now until September. If you have blood results indicating you are low, struggle with frequently getting sick, have one or more autoimmune diseases or mood disorders, it would be beneficial to investigate your vitamin D levels and if supplementation is required. Vitamin D testing is one of the many blood pathology tests I can organise to get some answers and start working on optimising your health.

13.01.2022 Overeaten the last few days and feeling the effects? Overeating can lead to a range of symptoms including: fatigue, feeling heavy, bloating, abnormal bowel motions, excessive gas, brain fog and the list goes on Some tips to manage your overeating aftermath include: ... Drink plenty of water, for most people that means a minimum of 2L a day. Lay off the heavier types of food for the next few days. Stick to lighter and smaller meals with a good dose of veggies, lighter protein types such as fish and reduce the number of heavy carbs you are consuming. Go for a walk. Light exercise can be beneficial for calming an upset stomach and can make you feel lighter and more energised afterwards. Have a few days break from alcohol to allow the digestive system to recover. Get a good night’s rest. A restorative night’s sleep can assist the body to detoxify. Digestive teas such as peppermint, chamomile or ginger can be helpful. Relax. It will pass and stress impairs the body to digest and clear toxins from the body. Do something relaxing that you enjoy and be kind to yourself during this time.

13.01.2022 If you have been diagnosed with IBS, SIBO or IBD, then you may have problems digesting fibre and certain types of carbohydrates that are likely to be fermented by your gut bacteria. The low-FODMAP diet is one of the most studied diets for IBS. Scientific studies have shown that a low-FODMAP diet can alleviate symptoms in up to 2/3 of participants. FODMAP is an acronym for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols. These are short-chain carboh...ydrates (sugars) that are rapidly fermented and can be poorly absorbed. FODMAPs when not absorbed correctly cause water to be drawn into the bowel creating symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain and diarrhoea (as seen in IBS). A low FODMAP diet is a helpful TEMPORARY diet used to reduce symptom flare ups before we start to work on optimising digestion and absorption. However, what I see commonly is that the low FODMAP diet is used as a NO-FODMAP diet or as a permanent diet which is not what it is intended for. Without doing the work to optimise digestion and absorption, any attempt to reintroduce higher FODMAP foods are going to cause symptoms as the cause has not been addressed. In addition, the long-term effects of a low FODMAP diet cause detrimental changes to the gut microbiome, your long-term nutrient intake and it is a challenging and socially difficult diet to follow long term leading to isolation. I strongly recommend that you do not undertake a lower fibre diet on your own and always consult a health professional to treat the cause and support you nutritionally through this process as eliminating permanently is not the solution.

09.01.2022 Now that daylight savings has finished up, the weather is cooling slightly (especially in the evening) and winter is becoming more and more imminent, I’m starting my immune support to get me through the cooler months. Why do I do this? When I was 13 I caught whooping cough and it was pretty horrible! I was coughing for about 12 weeks, broke ribs and even vomited regularly with coughing. Ever since this time, every time I get sick with just the common cold, it would immediate...ly go to my chest and I would cough for weeks. But then I found naturopathy and I strengthened my immune system and lung function and in the last few years, I have been able to get a sniffle without it leading to a full blown chest infection and irritating cough. If this is sounding all too familiar for yourself or a family member (kids included), get in touch as it is possible to improve the resilience of your immune system and to survive a winter without weeks at home with a nasty cough!

03.01.2022 There have been times during the last few months where my belly felt like a balloon - it was bloated, sore, gassy (sorry for the info) and made me feel pretty crappy! When it started I sat down and tried to work out what the cause was (typical naturopath wanting to find the cause!): - Was it due to the food I was consuming?... - Was it due to stress? - Was it due to sleep? - Was I drinking more alcohol? To be brutally honest, it was probably a combination of all of the above however definitely more food and stress. This made it easy for me to address the bloating, support my digestion and be bloat free a couple of weeks later. It can be easier said then done though, so let me know in the comments, what do you know that causes your tummy to bloat? Did your digestive symptoms worsen during the last few months?

03.01.2022 Low iron is a sign that something is not ok within the body. Its not enough to just take a supplement and move on. Why? ... Iron deficiency is a symptom, its not a cause. You need to identify WHY your iron levels are low: it could mean that your diet needs tweaking, your hormones could be disrupted, there could be other nutritional deficiencies, your immune system could be flaring up or your digestive system could not be functioning optimally. By addressing the cause, you prevent anything more sinister from occurring and you prevent your iron levels dropping again in the future. Want to know more? Check out our blog on iron!
