25.01.2022 During the week we had an incident that left poor Rocket with a minor wound on his leg. With the support of a dear friend we were able to catch Rocket, halter him and treat his wound which was quite a challenge even in a small paddock! So with some old pallets, one star picket, an old bed frame and a LOT of bailing twine we built a magnificent yard to make alpaca handling easier. I am happy to report that the alpacas are now happily going in and out of the yard of their own a...ccord and are getting happier with us being in there with them. Soon we will start closing the gate behind them for short periods. The aim of this being to teach them that the yard is nothing to worry about as well as to be happy with us handling them. #progress #alpacas #alpacasofinstagram #Rocket #groot #quill #training #animaltraining #lifeofatrainer #farmlife #farmhacks #woolygiraffesheep #giraffesheep See more

24.01.2022 CAT FACT- Contrary to popular belief, cats spend more time watching/observing their domain, rather than sleeping! But when they are napping, they are still speaking to us! WHERE a cat chooses to sleep shows you if they are a Bush, Tree or Beach Dweller!... Here we have some purrfect examples of a pair of sleeping beach bums! Beach cats often sleep in the open, like beds or couch cushions. HOW a cat sleeps tells us more! From a nervous quick nap, to out like a light and secure, cats are masters of continuous communication. Some of these pictures show a classic cat nap position, and others a deep relaxation and trust in their environment. Also a cute IKEA style nap snap Come to Catification! for all the tips you need for your beach, bush or tree dweller to help provide their best nap spots! After that, Chatty Cat Communication can help you have a conversation with your sleeping kitty! Sound off in the comments the weirdest spot you have found your cat sleeping! I'll start with: On top of the curtain rail -Posted by Chantal

24.01.2022 "Submission is another tricky point. Without submission, dominance cannot exist. Horses have no submissive gestures. All ethologist agree on this point. Therefo...re, moving away is said to signify submission. However, horses also move away from puma, wolves, motorbikes, flapping plastic, flies, bogs, cold winds and owners trying to catch them, without being thought to be submissive to them. The same reaction cannot be called submissive, defense, startle, self preservation, maintenance and insubordination without creating suspicion of a Humpty Dumpty use of words to suit the users purpose. Horses move away from anything they perceive as threatening, whatever it is. Submission, like dominance, is a highly charged word. Avoidance describes what happens, not what we interpret it to signify." Lucy Rees (Horses In Company) Theres a lot of talk about dominance and alphas, and how science has really dubunked this theory (that there is a dominant horse of the herd or that some horses are more dominant), but what about submission? Can horses be submissive? Do horses show signs of submission? Naturally along side the idea of dominance that means there has to be a submissive one, but as Lucy Rees states in her above quote (an ethologist, read her book listed above and linked in my bio) horses do NOT show signs or submission. Lip licking, moving away, lowering the head, turning an ear towards you... None of this is submissive behavior just as turning a butt towards you, biting, kicking, bumping into you, ignoring cues, etc are NOT behaviors of "dominance". For someone like me, who grew up understanding join up/hooking on/respect/submission, leadership, being your horses leader, etc. This was a PROFOUND idea that really rattled my understanding of the horse-human relationship.. and even the relationship my horses had with each other. To learn more, Horses in Company, by Lucy Rees is a phenomenal book https://amzn.to/2Tdwl7u And there are other resources out there. I have an article on my blog titled "Dominance and Leadership" https://www.thewillingequine.com/post/dominance-leadership Also JET Real Podcast just did an episode recently all about this. And also recently did a podcast episode myself about aggression within the he herd anchor.fm/thewillingequine or any major listening platform

10.01.2022 Fostering is a huge part of what we do here at Nighthaven - Empowered Learning. Helping those in need find their feet and starting them on their journey to their new furever homes gives us such joy. The best part though is seeing happy faces all round when they find their new furever homes. Check out the smiles from Elliot and his new human bestie. What a fabulous outcome :) A massive shout out and thanks to my mates BARC - Bendigo Animal Relief Centre for your tireless efforts xx

08.01.2022 Excellent post. Horses are a herd animal and should be kept as such. If your horse isnt, ask yourself why. Is it truly for their welfare or your convenience? https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10222535043347625&id=1316994605

06.01.2022 Interestingly I find this to be true of most species (the time frames being a rough guide of course). We are currently at 1.5 weeks of the alpacas being here and I am starting to see their true personalities coming through. They are a very opinionated group, and we are slowly learning each others language. Such a fascinating experience

04.01.2022 ***Announcement - Change is in the air*** Hi all, Firstly I would like to thank you all for your continued support of us here at Nighthaven - Empowered Learning. It has been an awesome journey so far despite the crazy times we are currently living.... The page has been very quiet in the last few months, but rest assured that we have been busy working away behind the scenes on some exciting new ventures. The first of these is a new private Facebook group (see link below). This group is a place for people to ask questions, share experiences and get ideas and inspiration on all things training and training related. You dont have to have worked with us at Nighthaven to be a part of this group, but you do need to answer the questions and agree to the rules to join. I encourage you to come and join the fun! The second is that we are restructuring our group training classes. We have a number of cool ideas bubbling away, however I would love to hear what you guys would like from a group training class. Is there something that we dont currently offer that you would like us to? Is there something you have been wanting to try but no one offers it? Have you always wanted to do something with your dog but dont know where to start? Let us know! Stay safe out there guys & keep an eye on the page for more information :) ~Emma~ https://www.facebook.com/groups/2326777260759312/?source_id=605638262946136

04.01.2022 This is a very nice explanation of a concept we were discussing in class yesterday - that being the necessity of certain items of training equipment. Although our discussion was around dogs, and this article is about horses, the concept is the same

04.01.2022 A beautiful explanation from a great friend. Check out Behaviour Antics if you havent already done so xx

I have to say though, I wasnt expecting such a fantastic article A huge thanks to the team @cityofgreaterbendigo for publishing such a lovely article, and making the boys and I look so good xx If youve ever b...een thinking about if fostering is for you, I strongly encourage you to have a read. . . . #foster #fosterkittens #fosterpuppy #fosteranimals #fostertoday #fosteringsaveslives #rescuedog #rescuepuppy #rescuekitten #barc #bendigoanimalreliefcentre #bendigo #cityofgreaterbendigo #teamnighthaven #nighthaven #empoweredlearning See more

02.01.2022 ***Todays Health Scare*** This morning we left Titan and Winston inside, as we often do, while I went to work and Ben did the shopping. When Ben got home, he found Titan had gotten up onto the bench and helped himself to food, including two bunches of grapes. I didnt think much of it until I mentioned it to a colleague (a vet nurse) who literally turned white and said take him to the vet. I thought grapes could cause some mild GI upsets, turns out they can cause acute ren...al failure in some dogs. My vet had the same response. A few hours and another vet bill later, Titans tummy is grape free and hes feeling very sorry for himself. Heres hoping for no further complications! #Titan #LordTitan #hounddog #dogs #dogsofinstagram #sillydog #warning #grapetoxicity #notcool #nighthaven #empoweredlearning See more
