25.01.2022 The Victorian Government is seeking community feedback on stronger planning controls to protect Melbourne’s green wedges and agricultural land. Consultation is now open on ‘Planning for Melbourne’s Green Wedges and Agricultural Land’. The consultation paper outlines planning reforms to prevent overdevelopment and ensure uses consistent with Green Wedge values are supported. Anyone who lives, works or visits the green wedge can have their say via the State Government's Engage... 25.01.2022 Nillumbik has a new Mayor after Ellis Ward Councillor Peter Perkins was elected to the role for 2020-2021 last night. New Swipers Gully Ward Councillor Frances Eyre was elected as Deputy Mayor, with both unanimously elected to their positions. Cr Perkins was first elected to Council in 2010 and this is his fourth term of Council. He has previously served a term as Mayor in 2012-13.... Cr Perkins said that as Mayor he would ensure that the community would be central to all decisions. Strengthening Council’s engagement with the community, supporting the community in the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and sustainability are among the big ticket issues on the agenda. 21.01.2022 CFA drill at Diamond Creek Reserve Tomorrow morning (Sunday, 13 December) at 8.30am, members of the Diamond Creek Fire Brigade will conduct a training drill to ensure fire trucks have clear access to Diamond Creek Reserve in the event of an emergency. The exercise will involve fire trucks traveling from the bowls club car park to the Tram Cafe. This is a standard operational procedure, with measures in place to ensure minimal disruption to users of the Reserve and Diamond Creek Regional Playspace. The exercise is expected to last no more than an hour and should not affect community access to the Playspace or Reserve.

20.01.2022 Rehabilitation works will be undertaken this month by Forest Fire Management Victoria to restore access to bushfire-impacted sections of Plenty Gorge Parklands. The works will start on Monday 11 January and are expected to take about two weeks. Work crews and heavy machinery will be working in the closed bushfire-impacted area to the south of Goldsworthy Lane in the southern section of the park.... You should avoid this section of the park if possible. Once the works are complete, the entire fire-affected area will be reopened to visitors, and Goldsworthy Lane will be reopened to vehicles. 10.01.2022 We were thrilled to be at the Eltham North Adventure Playground this week for the official presentation of a major Kidsafe National Playspace Design Award. Kidsafe Victoria CEO Melanie Courtney presented the award to Council, playground designers Jeavons Architects and Gardners Architects and builders Naturform. The Kidsafe National Playspace Design awards recognise excellence and innovation in the provision of safe, creative playspaces across Australia.... The Eltham North Adventure Playground was the winner in the Public Playspaces $1 million - $3 million category. Mayor Peter Perkins accepted the award together with Edendale Ward Councillor Natalie Duffy, CEO Carl Cowie, playground designers Mary Jeavons and Bruce Grillmeier from Jeavons Landscape Architects, Tony Jackson and Briony O’Brien from builders Naturform as well as Council staff. After being destroyed by fire in 2017, the playground was rebuilt in a huge collaboration with the community. The Nillumbik Community Pandemic Recovery Plan 2021-22 outlines Council’s initial response, along with the actions it will take to ensure the Nillumbik community can recover as restrictions continue to evolve and life shifts to a ‘COVID normal’. 06.01.2022 On Remembrance Day, when we have paused to reflect on the sacrifices of those who have served and fought for our country, we would like to share with you a tribute to our lost local heroes from Colonel Terry Beaton (Retd). COL Beaton, of the Montmorency Eltham RSL Sub Branch and the Eltham District Historical Society Inc has written Remembering Lost Local Heroes to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. Terry and his wife Sheila have extensively research...ed Nillumbik’s cemeteries to find hundreds of forgotten heroes in the past three years. His tribute tells the story of 10 World War II veterans. 06.01.2022 We are excited to share the news that not one, but two young Nillumbik residents are among the 32 winners of the Takeover Melbourne storytelling competition. Almost 300 people aged 12-18 entered Takeover Melbourne this year, which is a new initiative by the ABC. Fergal, of Wattle Glen, and Tahlia, of St Andrews, were the successful entries from Nillumbik and each have a powerful story to share.... Fergal shares his story of growing up with Tourette’s Syndrome. I’m not scared of my Tourette’s anymore. It makes me who I am, Fergal said. Tahlia, of St Andrews, speaks about surviving the Black Saturday bushfires. I want to remind people that despite the most challenging circumstances, in time, we can overcome anything, Talia said. 05.01.2022 Last chance! Submissions about proposed Amendment C131 to the Nillumbik Planning Scheme will close tomorrow, Thursday 3 June. The amendment, which applies to the Green Wedge Zone and Rural Conservation Zone, seeks to regulate earthworks in the green wedge. If approved, it will require a permit for earthworks involving the receipt, importation, stockpiling or placement of more than 100 cubic metres of soil.... 04.01.2022 Updated: COVID19 Circuit Breaker Grants for Small Business With the Circuit Breaker lockdown being extended for a further seven days, the Victorian Government has announced an additional $209 million for its Circuit Breaker Business Support Package to assist small to medium businesses and sole traders. The total package, which now stands at $460 million, will support businesses unable to operate due to these necessary public health measures, including targeted support for the... events industry. Applications will open tomorrow and will be available until midnight Thursday, 24 June. With safety nets such as JobKeeper no longer available, this package provides vital support to businesses doing their part to help keep Victorians safe throughout the circuit breaker action. The Victorian Government has made changes to all planning schemes regarding exemptions to clear vegetation to manage the risk of bushfire. The changes affect some urban areas in Eltham, Diamond Creek and Greensborough. The program aims to strengthen skills, strategies and tools for families to provide positive support to children and young people and respond effectively during the most challenging times.
