23.01.2022 I have spent a lot of time in the Top End but there someone else who has spent a lot more...Salt Water Crocodiles have been here for millions of years and that’...s because there very existence relies on animals such as ourselves to be complacent and comfortable in THEIR environment (Yes that’s right we are on the menu believe it). It doesn’t matter how clear the water is, it doesn’t matter if it’s 1 meter deep, it doesn’t matter that last year at the same spot you swam and everything was Ok, what does matter is when he pops up in front of you. Unfortunately there are not always Croc signs around...best bet is be wise and stay out of there reach #becrocwise

23.01.2022 THE SECRET PROJECT THAT'S BEEN SLOWLY TAKING SHAPE IN MY GARAGE AT HOME. Hi Guys, I thought it might be about time to throw up a post or two about a little pro...ject that's been slowly taking shape away from the workshop in my garage at home for what has probably been over a year now. Yes it's a new off road trailer design. But It's a little different to most of the other trailers out there and these first couple of posts will cover the design and construction of the Chassis. When I first started thinking about a new off road trailer there were a few criteria that I need to consider when throwing around the early conceptual drawings. I needed the platform to be versatile, adaptable, modular, and incorporate a wide range of interchangeable features to suit varying applications. While also having the ability to be a self supporting logistical platform that could be used in remote locations for extended periods of time. Although there were a lot of custom made trailers out there there didn't seem to be anything that covered the cross section of the market that I wanted to try reach out to. For example: Mining and exploration. Military logistics and training platform. Tour operator support trailers. Trade, mechanical and servicing industries. Remote area research and base camp set up's for Universities, Parks and wildlife etc. As well as the off road camper trailer market for those who were really serious about heading into extremely remote areas. It had to be able to able to get out through some of the most challenging tracks that the Australian outback could throw at it. But more importantly it had to be able to get you back. So here are a few pictures of the CAD design and also some pictures of the Chassis and draw bar components coming together. https://offroaddesigns.com.au/

19.01.2022 Trailer build Part IV. This is why I like the idea of a single central draw bar over the traditional "A" frame set up. :) It gives you the ability to safely do ...a 90* jack knife which makes it a whole lot easier to wriggle yourself back and forwards to get out of tight spots off road. Also helps to have a reversing camera so you can keep an eye on what's happening back there.:) Did I also mention that you can also use the draw bar as a 38ltr water tank or a compressed air tank. :) See more

12.01.2022 THE SECRET PROJECT THAT'S BEEN SLOWLY TAKING SHAPE IN MY GARAGE AT HOME. Part III Time for another update on the new tandem camper trailer. This time the Chassi...s returns from the galvanisers and gets some suspension and wheels. You will see in these photos that I ended up welding the bolt on cross braces to the frame. That's because I was a bit worried that things might warp and twist during the galvanising process. But as it turned out it was all good and I didn't really need to worry about it after all. Mind you they still managed to bend part of the frame when moving it around with the fork lift. :( Still nothing a big mash hammer couldn't straighten before assembly. :) See more

10.01.2022 Here’s a little camping tip for you. If you are getting sick of hundreds of bugs buzzing around your lights at night. Place a leafy branch next to it. 90% of the bugs will settle down on the branch and stop flying around.

07.01.2022 TRAILER BUILD PART 6. It's only when you begin the assembly process that you start to realise how many individually fabricated parts and pieces go into a build like this. At least it's starting to look something like the drawings now.

03.01.2022 Tandem Camper Trailer Build part 5. Here's a quick look at the body design for the new trailer without the doors attached so you can have a quick look inside. I...'ve also attached a few photos of the chassis with the secondary frame attached with the body mounts. The aluminium body will then bolt down onto this frame with 68 m8 bolts into riv nuts that have been inserted into the top of the frame. See more

02.01.2022 Tandem Camper Trailer Build 7. Well..... It might not have doors yet but at least the majority of the body is assembled and mounted in place now. Next on the "T...o Do List" will be to re assemble the two front fridge slides, rear draws, fold out kitchen and then some doors would be nice, before it starts raining again. See more

02.01.2022 THE SECRET PROJECT THAT'S BEEN SLOWLY TAKING SHAPE IN MY GARAGE AT HOME. Part II Here are a couple of more features that I've incorporated into the Chassis desi...gn. These angled brackets in the first picture that are welded into the front cross member are for a pair of double jerry can mounts which will allow me to carry 80 ltrs of fuel or water externally on the trailer with the option to also fit a gas bottle into one if needed. The second and third are of one of the 4 the shock absorber top mounting pins which extend through the RHS with the lower support gusset welded underneath for a bit more strength. Picture #4 with the chassis turned upside down is of the rear winch plate set up. You can also see the bash guard on the rear of the draw bar. Which will help protect the bottom of the pin that drops through rear recovery point as it gets dragged over rocks etc. Similar to the one on the front which protects the hand brake lever and cables. This last picture #5 gives you a good look at the rear cross member with the 5mm steel guards that will hopefully protect the resin filled led lights from any reversing incidents with trees. :) The slotted holes in the top of the cross member are for cable ties to help keep all the wiring up and out of the way. And finally the large round holes in the top are for some of the 20 neoprene body mounts which will separate the base chassis from the upper cahassis frame and hopefully stop any vibration or movement making its way up into the aluminium body. Next stop - Hot Dip Galvanising. :) See more

01.01.2022 Tandem Camper Trailer Build 9. Ok, It's time to pull it all apart once again and add a bit of colour. :) It good to finally get to this point and see what a di...fference a bit of powder coat and paint can make compared to the bare aluminium. Tomorrow will be the final body fit out with jerry can mounts, Gas bottle holders and hangers. Lights, bigger off road tyres, roof rack rails, shovel holder, jacking points, maxtrax mounts, rear ladder, internal carpet lining etc. etc. See more

01.01.2022 Tandem Camper Trailer Build 10. Just thought I'd post up a few of the latest trailer pictures as everything is being re assembled and bolted back in place. :) N...ow I guess it's time to start on the complicated stuff....... "The electrical fit out." :) I dropped it to Enerdrive this afternoon in Tingalpa and had a chat to the guys about the options regarding a new battery management system design and have to admit that these guys really are at the top of their game when it comes to 12v systems. I think I'm in 12v information overload at the moment. So watch this space over the next few weeks as I try to design a new all purpose battery management system for the trailer from scratch. By squeezing in Inverters & Inverter Chargers, Solar Panels & Solar Controllers, Battery Monitors & possibly even a lithium battery kit. https://offroaddesigns.com.au/ See more
