25.01.2022 Building social housing means a home for those who need it most, and it means jobs in construction. Economic stimulus can also deliver a lasting benefit to the Territory. The 2020/21 NT Budget missed this opportunity to do the smart thing, that it is also the right thing to do. NT Shelter Katie Woolf Mix 104.9

24.01.2022 An absolute must-read article about Leanne Liddle and the Aboriginal Justice Agreement. If delivered, the AJA promises to turn around the NT Justice system in 5 years. It can’t possibly be another document.... Those prisons are full, those graveyards are full, you know, it just can’t keep going like this. - Leanne Liddle, Director Aboriginal Justice Agreement. https://www.abc.net.au//mapping-justice-in-the-n/12918946

22.01.2022 It is immensely disappointing that the NT Government has decided to mark NAIDOC week by rushing through a Bill designed to weaken the independent Liquor Commission. The Liquor Commission was introduced as part of the Government's broader alcohol reforms. It ensures that the health and safety of the community is considered in decisions, but this new legislation will undermine that process. The Liquor Commission has already rejected Woolworths’ application to build a 1800 sq...uare metre Dan Murphy’s in Darwin, in large part because of the significant alcohol harm it poses for nearby Aboriginal communities. There is substantial opposition to this store. The NT Government, alongside community, health and Aboriginal groups, has been working to tackle alcohol abuse and we are beginning to see improvements in health and wellbeing. This store will undermine all this hard work, said Deborah Di Natale, CEO of NTCOSS. 22.01.2022 As the holiday season approaches, the Federal Government is deciding on the future of JobSeeker, Youth Allowance and other income support payments. So why not send a holiday card to our Prime Minister just reminding him how much the Territory needs to Raise the Rate for Good. You can find a downloadable card, and where it can be sent, and lots more at the link. ... Wouldn't it be great to end this year on some good news. https://raisetherate.org.au/make-your-organisations-season/

21.01.2022 The ABC have started to crunch the data from their Australia Talks Survey - and the 60,000 Australian's surveyed are throwing up some interesting numbers. For instance over 65% of Australians think unemployment payments should be higher - and 68% of respondents support raising the age of criminal responsibility. You can see how you compare with the rest of Australia with their interactive tool - it doesn't cover off the more than 600 questions the original participants were asked, but gives you a taste of just what Australians are thinking : https://australiatalks.abc.net.au/

19.01.2022 Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. On average one woman a week dies at the hands of her partner or former partner. The rates of violence against women in the NT needs our urgent attention and it was heartening to hear Kate Worden talk about her commitment to treating this as priority. Thanks Charlie King for leading the way with NO MORE AU. Your leadership is making a real difference. ... Thanks Luke Gosling MP for sponsoring a table and inviting NTCOSS. Together we can work on the solutions. #breakthecycle

19.01.2022 The Federal Budget had a sting in its tail for migrants accessing the social safety net. The government proposes that people who receive permanent residency from 1 January 2022 will have to wait four years to be eligible for social security payments including: Family Tax Benefit Part B (current wait 0 years)... Family Tax Benefit Part A (current wait 1 year) Carer Allowance (current wait 1 year) Carer Payment (current wait 2 years) Parental Leave Pay/Dad and Partner Pay (current wait 2 years) This cut targets children, their families, and carers, with the Department of Social Services expecting 45,000 families and 13,200 individuals to be denied support. In addition, people affected will likely have worked and paid taxes in Australia on Temporary Visas for over three years before becoming eligible to apply for a Permanent Visa. They are not newly arrived. Many will have already applied for Permanent Residency, but due to prolonged processing wait times (often exceeding 12 months) will not be accepted before January 2022. Permanent residents are our future Australians and should be made to feel welcome, secure and accepted. These measures are not only deeply unfair and hurtful to future citizens but corrosive to the social cohesion Australians all work to protect. NTCOSS has joined the call to the Federal Government to not proceed with these harsh cuts. It is a 'budget saving' that will cost a lot more than it saves.

16.01.2022 Thursday 19th November is a National Day of Action to Raise the Rate for Good. The decision to cut the coronavirus supplement by $100 a fortnight will see more than 33,800 Territorians start 2021 reduced to $50 a day to cover food, housing, bills and essentials. It also means, during the NT's quietest economic months, more than $1.6 million a week won't be spent in our local shops and businesses, adding up to a staggering $20 million by the end of March.... We need to Raise the Rate. Join us to make sure the Federal Government understands the harsh reality of their Christmas cut. https://raisetherate.org.au/take-part-in-the-day-of-action/

16.01.2022 This is not a post that we ever wanted to make and our hearts are completely broken, we have no words that adequately expresses our pain, shock and hurt for the... news we have to share. The Tangentyere Women's Family Safety Group (TWFSG) are in mourning for our sister. R.Rubuntja was killed on Thursday 7th January 2021 in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) outside the Hospital. Her partner appeared in court today charged with murder. R.Rubuntja was one of the founding Leaders of the TWFSG and President of Anthepe Town Camp. We grieve now and then we mobilise, we will continue, it just may take a minute. We will be inspired by our sisters' legacy, we will not let her be forgotten and then we will ask you to stand with us against family and domestic violence.

15.01.2022 The cashless debit card is a solution that doesn't work, for a problem that doesn't exist! It is heartbreaking to see this legislation, that will impact 23,000 Territorians, rushed through based on little more than anecdote and ideology. If only the Federal Government was so gung ho about remote job creation. We will keep fighting against this expensive, racist, punitive legislation.... 14.01.2022 It is so frustrating that thousands upon thousands of dollars will be spent attempting to introduce a voluntary Cashless Debit Card in the NT. This is money that could be better spent on housing, or employment.

13.01.2022 The Heywire competition is on again! If you know someone (or are someone!) who’s 16-22 years of age, with a great story about life in the NT, this is an incredible opportunity! Enter now: https://www.abc.net.au/heywire/competition/

09.01.2022 Every cost of living report we produce makes clear how much more low income households spend on energy. Minimum energy efficiency standards for rental properties would mean that people who rent could have affordable bills *and* a healthy home. NTCOSS has joined the Healthy Homes for Renters campaign to lift the standards of our Territory rentals - for those freezing in uninsulated homes in the Centre, through to those sweltering in hot boxes in the North.... You can sign the petition and learn more about the campaign right here: https://www.healthyhomes.org.au/petition

06.01.2022 There is no doubt there will be more alcohol-related crime, more alcohol related deaths, and more alcohol related harm against children including FASD. This is a really good sample, yet again, of corporate wilful blindness. - Olga Havnen, CEO of Danila Dilba Health Service No matter which way you look at it, Darwin cannot afford this Dan Murphy's. #peoplebeforeprofits Dan Murphy's

05.01.2022 So good to be in Groote. Got to see Attorney General Selena Uibo: Member for Arnhem launch the law and justice groups here. Minister Chansey Paech MLA spoke of his support for community decision making. Well done to everyone for making this happen. ... The Aboriginal Justice Agreement is starting to take shape.

05.01.2022 Today’s budget was a small business budget, but the Territory Government needs to remember the importance of the not-for-profit and community sector. The Sector is essential to the Territory’s economic and community resilience. We contribute $3.26 billion to the NT economy, employ more than 10,000 people, and we are vital to the 2020/21 budget’s stated objectives of creating the nation’s comeback capital. We welcome the NT Government's expansion of the Commonwealth’s JobMak...er hiring credit so that now small businesses receive a $200 wage subsidy for hiring a Territorian on JobSeeker, no matter their age. We also welcome the training grants for peak industry bodies, the supports for school leavers to engage with the Sector, and continued investment in the renewable remote power program. However the urgency of the reforms in Aboriginal Justice, in Domestic Violence, or in Social Housing are not less because times are tough. The Chief Minister cannot forget the not-for-profit sector if he wants the Territory to make a strong recovery. https://ntcoss.org.au//northern-territory-council-of-soci/

05.01.2022 Reconciliation Week runs until Thursday the 3rd June - and Reconciliation Australia has lots of ideas about what we can all do to help mark it, and to take action. Because reconciliation needs to be more than a word. #nrw2021

03.01.2022 NAIDOC week is over for another year but we should always celebrate the powerful history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. A highlight this year was the Aboriginal Press Club Address by Olga Havnen from Danila Dilba Health Service and Selena Uibo: Member for Arnhem, NT Attorney General. It is well worth watching these strong women speak, not only of the challenges Aboriginal Territorians confront, but of the solutions and the hope an...d vision for the future. "I understand that many people feel that it has taken far too long for government to address the high incarceration rates of Aboriginal people here in the NT despite the plethora of reports that circulate within the halls of universities, parliaments and government offices. I look forward to the day that I can tell my now six-month-old daughter, sooner rather than later, that I, with others as passionate and committed as me, that together we were the change agents that wrote the new chapter that learnt from a past that can never be repeated." - Selena Uibo. https://iview.abc.net.au/video/NS2038H001S00
