20.01.2022 What’s that old saying....’happy as a pig in mud or shit I guess, but I’m sure old ScoobyDoo is happy with himself, after 2 months in ISO he broke into the sows paddock and reminded the girls how good looking he was. We have been breeding pigs for the past 10 years and now believe our free range Berkshire x Durock genetics are quality market meat pigs and we have been learning to make small goods from ham, bacon, sausages to utilising most of animals carcass when processing..., so rendering the animals fat or making Braun is something that I personally love to do, especially bacon bones for a boil up...and you can blame the KIWI in me for that. At present, there is nowhere for our pigs to be slaughtered or to be sold live in any animal auction markets in the NT, but hopefully this may change in the future for the small hobby farmer like ourselfs...in the meantime, it’s generally a family affair, with young and old helping out, or sometimes the ‘odd’ local ring in comes to lend a hand... and many hands the merrier when it comes to doing pigs I always say, but there’s always the golden rule when culling...’cracking a beer’ it’s a ‘must’ to celebrate the animals life with a beer !!! 18.01.2022 Bella Mia and baby Luna Pearla enjoying the delights of mango season plus my garden!!!!

17.01.2022 It’s been a while since I last posted on my page, all I can say is sorry but this year has being nothing short of ‘Shits & Giggles’. We unfortunately lost one of our beautiful maremma pups due to baiting ‘big lessons learnt’ and not long after our old mate ‘Clancy’ our red dog, to a mongrel pack of dingoes, but after many tears we took on another dog, the ‘polar bear’, and now preparing to increase our team with another 3 or 4 female maremma pups. As you may be aware over the... years the dingos have been relentless in killing our sheep and piglets, but after introducing our maremma pup and now the polar bear, we certainly have reduced the number of dingo attacks ‘many sleepless nights with the barking’, whist in training, but the girls are proving to be a very powerful team. Maremma dogs are certainly unlike any other dog, in fact we call our girl Taupuri ‘wolf’. I have been raising the next door neighbours kids....double trouble, sisters ‘India Curry’, my advise is to think twice before you get any ideas about raising goats, you will need escape proof fencing. 16.01.2022 When ‘life on the farm is sort of laid back’.....and then it’s lambing time!! Some of these babies come in all sorts of spectacular colours, the antics of these cute little lambs certainly puts a smile on your face each morning when they bounce around and have running races. Touch wood everyone is safe, whilst the dingos are walking the the fine line wanting to eat our babies, our beautiful wolf Taupuri, has had her first encounter with a pack of dingos, clearly letting these mongrels know that she’s not mucking around now. Our maremma guardian dog is nearly 2 years old, and she takes her job very seriously, even while she’s training the polar bear pup...

12.01.2022 Meet The Damara Sheep Breed From Eastern Asia The Damara is a breed of domestic sheep and was originally from Eastern Asia and Egypt . The breed then moved down... to the present day Namibia and Angola . For many years the sheep were in an isolated region of Namibia and thus remained free of influence from other breeds. They are found in northwestern Namibia (Kaokoland) and southern Angola where they were herded relatively free from external influences, by the local inhabitants ( Himba and Tjimba ). The name of the breed was derived from the specific region where the sheep were originally encountered (formerly known as Gross Damaraland). The Damara is a fat-tailed sheep that grows short, coarse hair. They can be uni-colored (black, brown or white) or multi-colored (black and white pied). Damara sheep can survive in a harsh environment and under poor nutritional conditions. The breed is exceptionally vigorous and can produce and reproduce where water and grazing is fairly restricted. This makes it very suitable for the communal areas of Namibia where extreme conditions are usually the norm rather than the exception. Research has however shown that the breed responds very well to optimum conditions. It has a fairly high resistance to most sheep diseases and also good tolerance against internal parasites. The Damara sheep has a diverse diet. It feeds on grass, bush and shrubs and can almost be classified as a browser. Research has indicated that up to 64% of the diet of the Damara sheep can consist of browsing material. This places the Damara in the same feeding category as goats. The mothering ability of the breed is exceptional. The ewes produce enough milk even to raise twin lambs which will occur in 5 to 10% of the births. They care well for their young and will even fight off predators when attacked by such. Orphan lambs are a rarity in the breed because of the outstanding mothering ability. It is known for example that ewes with small lambs can be transported over long distances without ending up with a single orphaned lamb.

11.01.2022 WHAT'S THE BEST THING ABOUT GROWING UP IN THE COUNTRY? These joyful photos have a feel-good story behind them too. Sheree runs a hobby farm in Adelaide River ...in the NT, but her husband is stuck in WA due to COVID-19 border closures. It's meant they've asked a nearby family farm to help them slash fire breaks, bale hay and manage weeds. Little did they know, these four "bush princesses" came along with the deal! They were helping out mum and dad with the hay, despite the youngest being only a year old. Elektra, the oldest at 7, has already started her apprenticeship as a haymaker! : Sheree Jones from Mabuhay Sheep Farm, NT.
