25.01.2022 "Bring a Friend" Deal!! Hello crew! We are looking forward to our art and music workshops these school holidays and want all of you to be there..and we mean all of you! Your friends and family too. However, we understand that this is not always affordable, so we have come up with a "Bring a Friend" deal that can help you fund your workshops (and help us spread the word about what is happening at the same time :-)) So here's the deal if you tell someone about the workshops ...and they end up coming, you will be given a 10% discount off your own fee. And yes you can bring as many people as you want. So, if youre really keen, you can bring 10 of your friends and receive 100% off your own fee ;-) Terms and conditions: 1. This only applies if the person you tell had not heard about the workshops prior to you telling them. 2. You get a discount as many times as they attend (eg. if they come to one workshop, you get a discount for one workshop). For all the info on the workshops, head to our webpage: www.onebitelearning.com.au/holiday-workshops See more

24.01.2022 Hey everyone - update on where things are at in the world of One Bite: 1. We are currently closed/still open. 2. I am very sad/excited about this. I cant be any clearer!... Well.actually.I probably can make this a little clearer so let me explain. We have closed the office for face-to-face lessons, but we are working toward being open online. Over the coming week we are going to be working hard to find and set up the best ways to take our individualised, interactive, hands-on learning onto the wide world of the web. To be honest I am very sad/excited about this. The sad part of me had to say goodbye to students this week knowing I probably wont see you all in the flesh for quite some time! The excited part of me is the teacher geek side of my brain thats come out late at night every day this week as Ive been finding all of the amazing things that are happening in the world of online learning and getting much too excited about the possibilities of what we could do with this. So watch this space! Im sure we will have something amazing to offer you shortly. In the meantime, Ill be sharing top picks from the awesome free/reduced rate resources that are currently being offered by online learning groups around the world! Stay safe everyone! Wishing you all love and light and peace in the crazy times and looking forward to seeing your smiling faces again shortly!

23.01.2022 Installment 1 of up and coming attractions is here.... I started a blog!! Okay - maybe that doesn't sound very exciting, but just think of it as the talky, explainy part of a platform that will be used to share all of the useful stuff with all of the people. If you want to check out my ramblings on education, you can go and check out said blog. If you're not interested in my ramblings, but would be interested in other things coming - also head over to the page and sign up for the "Teach One Bite" platform to get notified of any other resources/ideas/training that will be released in the future!

18.01.2022 Okay guys I have a VERY EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT! I have just....(drumroll please)....posted the first videos of the "Teach One Bite" series! Okay - if you don't know what that means...don't worry - no one knows what that means....because it is literally brand new! Well - in a way it's brand new. It's brand new in that I am releasing this on a platform to share with others. It's old in that this is coming from the resources, curriculum and training videos that we have b...een developing at One Bite over the last four years - always with the intention of at some point in the future being able to release it to parents or others who are able to assist their children/students with learning. So - that is why this is a very exciting day!!! There are only a few videos so far (I've started with some basic overviews of phonetic teaching - as well as a video of my dog. Because why not) but stay tuned as I am planning to grow and build upon it with more info and resources - as well as possible training courses - over the coming months. Anyway - without further ado - here it is - go check it out! http://onebitelearning.com.au/teach-one-bite/ See more

17.01.2022 Hey guys, So - today's basic skill that I thought I could help with was games! Actually....boring teacher confession.....it was spelling. But spelling is a huuuuggggeee topic that I could go on about forever (and probably will go on about forever over the coming weeks), and in the name of first things being first - I thought I'd better start by sharing some games....cause if you're going to be reading and writing a bunch of word lists you may as well make it fun! A couple o...f links to share. The first one is to a page which has a whole bunch of editable gameboards. You can use these to make games out of any spelling list - and they are here: https://www.phonicbooks.co.uk/advi/free-teaching-resources/ The second is a link to part of the video series I've made for new tutors starting with us explaining some of the games we play at One Bite. This is just a rough guide to get you thinking about creative ways you can turn any spelling list into a game (also - if you're one of our current students, you'll probably recognise some of these - and your mum and dad might be able to have a go at them at home ). If you want to check that out - the link is here: http://onebitelearning.com.au/index.php/general-use-games/ Hope that gets your creative game-creator juices flowing! Don't have too much fun without me! See more

15.01.2022 The new website is finally here!! www.onebitelearning.com.au And it contains my whole career and lifework! Okay Heather, you’re being dramatic. But also it’s true! On this new website is the entire One Bite Learning literacy program. ... Yes the entire program. That’s the information, training and resources that we use to teach literally every literacy concept I’ve ever had to teach. I’ve worked with a web designer to make this as user-friendly as possible. The ultimate goal is a resource that makes it possible for a whole range of users whether trained teacher or not to assess any student and access all they need in order to teach that student. At risk of sounding somewhat braggy this is kind of a big deal. This is not the sort of thing that you can access on any normal educational page. It's not just one or two resources or a couple of training sessions this is a condensed version of everything I have ever created as a literacy teacher (it’s actually now 110 pages not to mention the multiple downloads on many pages!). Now to be honest, this is a bit of a scary post for me. I’m self-conscious to put this out there. I’ve just confessed that this has basically been my lifework for the last 5 years but it’s not ‘flash’ or ‘polished’ in any way. In fact most of the pages include videos of myself talking to an iPad in order to show how to teach a concept. These were filmed on the job in my house or in my office and I assure you none of them are glamorous! Some of the pages have nothing but a ‘coming soon!’ label. (I’m sorry they really are coming soon but there were just too many things to get sorted already!) But I’m opening it up to you 'as is' because..(and this is the most exciting thing) I want you to help me! You see something happened along the way as I was creating this thing. It kind of outgrew me! I started thinking that maybe it wasn’t just my training and resources that could be included in this but that it could maybe become just the start of a collaborative something! Because this is the sort of thing that takes a village and I thought that my page the basic program that I had created could become an easy-to-use platform for that village. It could become a place where all of us who are working with these kids could stop reinventing a wheel that other people on our team have already invented and instead glean from each other! How this actually works is explained on the site but I had to let you know it’s there! Because this is what I need you all for right now! Please share this around then come and share on the page together! Okay so in the words of the great Warner Brothers philosophers that’s all folks. Here’s the link follow through and check it out. Excuse any quirks or glitches (in fact.even let me know about any quirks or glitches?!) It’s literally brand new a fresh born baby! Here’s to watching it grow! www.onebitelearning.com.au See more

15.01.2022 Hey everyone, This looks like an amazing event for anyone interested in learning to read or teaching to read. 09.01.2022 So....yesterday I started the office pack-down It is a bittersweet feeling to say goodbye to this place its certainly been an eventful, colourful few years running a tutoring office full of eventful, colourful students! (not to mention eventful, colourful tutors) elephants, unicorns, off-key singing, disturbing dance moves, and even the occasional office fire. Oh yeah and we also managed to fit some pretty mega learning into all that But this is not th...e end! In fact this is a very exciting shift. Up until this point we have been just a tutoring office which has been great! But it has also limited how many students we could reach and how often we could reach them. As of next term we will all be shifting into offering home-based tutoring but on top of this, we are also hoping to develop different ways and means for more students to benefit more often and in more ways from what we do. What exactly will this mean? Well thats a whole other exciting kettle of fish that Im hoping to start sharing as it cooks over the coming weeks and months. In the meantime stay gold! And stay tuned for all our exciting next episodes See more

07.01.2022 Morning all! So as online learning gets underway in Queensland, Ive had and heard lots of conversations about how parents can focus on learning just the necessary skills with their children without students (and parents!) getting overwhelmed and frustrated. Of course one of the best things your child can be practicing is reading, so I thought I would link you to a bunch of the best free or cheap decodable readers available at the moment (lots of great covid sales on r...esources right now!). As a literacy teacher, decodable readers are one of the most powerful tools in my toolkit. Getting into some of these would be a top recommendation for a lot of my students. Ive cut a video from our training series to give a brief overview of what decodable readers are and how you can use them. Watch this for extra info if youre keen or just click through the links for the free resources! http://onebitelearning.com.au//systematic-phonetic-readers/

05.01.2022 And were back! For those of you who havent been following the drama at One Bite over the last few days......our office kind of burned down a little bit... But weve found a new space, gathered the essential resources and are super excited to get going again this afternoon. Big thanks to all of the people who have been so helpful and supportive over the past few days - everyone from students right through to the strangers behind me at Officeworks have offered to help us ou...t. Special mention to my parents who basically cleaned and transported everything, my church who let me use their photocopier to print everything and all of my teacher friends whove let me borrow and steal resources. Turns out restarting a business after it burns down is one of those things you cant do without a tribe Looking forward to seeing this place full of students this afternoon! See more
