19.01.2022 Would you like to see train travel return to Tasmania? A dedicated group of train buffs in the Derwent Valley are hoping to bring back the romance of the rail to the state.

19.01.2022 The current downtime has been a great opportunity to complete the work at stations sites and other areas of the railway that needed maintenance and upgrades but... were tricky to complete with a regular train service running. This includes our track work on the Strahan end of the line but most importantly the work needed for upkeep of the steam locomotives. Loco No. 1 was pulled down prior to the COVID shutdown for her scheduled 10 year boiler upgrade and regular maintenance, however this extra time has allowed us to give her more of a thorough and complex overhaul. Pictured here is a general view of work being done to Loco #1, bunker and mainframes stripped and an up close of her cylinders and valve gear being worked on. The rack/sub chassis has been carefully prepared over many weeks and in numerable fine measurements and adjustments of tolerances etc; ready for offering up to the mainframes proper at some stage soon. In the meantime the loco’s boiler which is out of the frame and sitting ahead of the mainframes in the workshop, has also been largely fitted out in readiness for installation back into the frames. Pictured here you can see the cementing of the furnace floor and also a section of the brick arch in the mould. The cab top, sand boxes & water tanks having also been refurbished including a fresh coat of paint and are now ready for re-installation. Time has been taken on this particular project to ensure it is done correctly and areas of needed attention have all been covered, which means a time frame on Number 1's return isn't promised. What we do know however is that we miss her in action and are looking forward to a day in the near future when we can welcome her back on track with the team once again. See more

16.01.2022 Meet Charlie! When he arrived in Australia from Italy, the one word that came to mind was abundance - there was plenty of everything. For Charlie, as the years ...passed, working on the Snowy was about giving something back to his new country. He’s very proud of his contribution to the Snowy Scheme, and even prouder that his granddaughter now works for the same company he spent many happy years working for. Watch Charlie’s Snowy story below.

06.01.2022 Tasmania’s newest rail preservation project on track to make a difference in Regional Tasmania!

05.01.2022 Welcome to the Aurora Australis Foundation Facebook page! The AAF Ltd was established with the very ambitious intent of acquiring and preserving the Antarctic ...icebreaker Aurora Australis as a ship museum in Hobart, so her history and stories can be shared with Australians and international visitors. Although it seems that this ultimate ambition is no longer achievable, we are working hard now to develop a strategy to preserve the legacy of this remarkable ship through oral histories, artefacts and images that trace her service over 30 years. We have a very active board made up of directors of the AAF as a registered charity with tax deductible status. Information will be posted here as plans develop! Meanwhile, visit our website www.aurora-australis.org.au and Like this page to hear all the news ongoing.

04.01.2022 A BIG BIT of Australian Operating Heritage has been added to the NATIONAL HERITAGE LIST today. The Dish, Australia’s most famous Radio Telescope at the CSIRO Parkes Observatory, will be conserved and protected for future generations after being awarded National Heritage status. Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley in announcing the Heritage Listing today said the listing recognises decades of work by Australian scientists, engineers and others involved with advancing our n...ation’s role in understanding the universe. The telescope IS THE FIRST FUNCTIONING SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENT TO BE ADDED TO THE HERITAGE LIST. Construction of the 64-metre diameter telescope at CSIRO's Parkes Observatory was completed in 1961, an achievement of engineering and technical design. The telescope is best known for its role in supporting NASA’s missions, and now almost 60 years old, the Parkes telescope continues to be used by Australian and international astronomers. It's also a seriously big bit of Operating Heritage. https://www.environment.gov.au///national/parkes-observato
