22.01.2022 WHAT’S COOKING IN THE ORKABIE DOWNS KITCHEN TONIGHT? Home caught blue salmon fillets with garlic, ginger, homegrown chives and dill. Drizzled with extra virgin olive oil, sprinkled with salt and pepper and topped with homegrown flowering broccolini and a slice of bush lemon. All that wrapped in alfoil and popped in the oven with the roast veggies. Yummo! ... Ricky will also have fish ‘wings’ coated in cornflour (for crunch) and shallow fried. #lifeatorkabiedowns #homecooking #selfsufficiency #farmlife

13.01.2022 It’s that time of year again. The build up to our wet season with temperatures in the low to mid 30’s and humidity from 70-100%. Whether it’s my age, time of life or that I’m getting soft; I really struggle with this hot, humid, sweaty weather. ... We relocated an old cattle trough from the paddock to the house yard yesterday afternoon. Gave it a bit of a scrub and clean up and noticed there was a hidden channel around the top, under the lip, with two overflow points on the inside of the trough. We stuck the hose up there and cleaned out as much mud and debris as we could. After we filled the trough and hopped in for a cool down, I joked that I wouldn’t be able to get out of the trough fast enough should a serpent come slithering out of one of the overflow holes. But we sat, relaxed and cooled off with no threat from displaced wildlife. After today’s stinking weather and short storm I decided to have another quick cool down in my little pool. Except that that overflow hole must have been home to the biggest tarantula I have ever seen. It looks dead. Drowned most likely. But just to be sure, I’ll wait till Ricky gets home for safe removal. #lifeatorkabiedowns

12.01.2022 What’s cooking in the Orkabie Downs kitchen? This week saw us harvest our two plots of homegrown beetroot and magically turn them into 16 large jars of pickled beetroot which should see us out till next growing season. We also used 3kg of our super sweet cherry tomatoes in a Smoky Tomato Chilli Chutney. It is best left to age for six weeks but there’s already three jars gone! ... I’ve marinated tonight’s homegrown pork spare ribs in it too; watch this space for updates. We’ve been busy picking, washing and blitzing the many buckets of cherry tomatoes ready for the freezer. These sweeties are great in soups, stews, pasta dishes, sauces and chutneys and hopefully will see us through till next season. #lifeatorkabiedowns #selfsufficiency

12.01.2022 Tip of the day We bake our empty egg shells in the oven (when we are cooking something else, to save power) and grind them up in the mortar and pestle and feed back to the chickens to increase the calcium in their diet. They are also handy to sprinkle around strawberry plants to deter snails and slugs. Or add to compost or worm farms.

09.01.2022 VERMICOMPOST With the help of a couple of friends we’ve set up a cow poop vermicompost area. This, together with our two small worm farms will help add nutrients to our garden soil. ... {Wikipedia} Vermicompost (vermi-compost) is the product of the decomposition process using various species of worms, usually red wigglers, white worms, and other earthworms, to create a mixture of decomposing vegetable or food waste, bedding materials, and vermicast. This process is called vermicomposting, while the rearing of worms for this purpose is called vermiculture. #lifeatorkabiedowns #farmlife #permaculture #selfsufficiency

05.01.2022 NATURAL DEODORANT I recently tried some homemade natural deodorant that I found in our local whole foods shop, made by a young local lady. It worked too!! ... But after a few days it gave me a rash under one of my arms. After some research I found that if the ratio of bi-carb was changed, the irritation should go away. So I made a batch myself today. Three small jars of rosemary and cedar wood and four small jars of peppermint. (That’s the only essential oils I had available at the time). I’m one of those people who sweat a lot. In summer I use an antiperspirant deodorant stick AND a spray just to get me through the day. These chemical laden deodorants are no good for our bodies so I hope this natural one works, without any irritation. #lifeatorkabiedowns #permaculture #selfsufficiency

01.01.2022 WHATS HAPPENING IN THE ORKABIE DOWNS KITCHEN? I was given a daikon radish this week from a lady in our local garden club. I’d never bought, tasted or grown daikon radish before and was eager to try. My opinion is that it looks like a large white carrot and tastes like a mild radish. My kimchi recipe calls for a daikon radish as part of the purée but I’d never been able to find one locally so I’ve substituted a turnip or carrot.... Today’s five jars of kimchi boast the daikon radish but are missing the pear which I substituted with an apple. I also didn’t have any shallots so I used fresh onion tops from some onions farmer Ricky has in the garden at the moment. Only time will tell. They are resting nicely on the kitchen windowsill in the warm afternoon sun until fermentation begins. #lifeatorkabiedowns #selfsufficiency #orkabiedowns https://www.thespruceeats.com/chinese-white-radish-daikon-6
