23.01.2022 In response to the growing following of 'Medalist' events in Western Australia we have also chosen to include a medalist section of competition at the Zahira Crystals Perth Ballroom Challenge. We hope that by doing this we will be able to include a much greater section of a dance community, and thus create a true 'Perth Ballroom Challenge'. In keeping with the rules set by most other societies running Medalist competitions, these events are open to dancers who are un-register...ed, registered as Recreational or are 'C Grade' in the U16 Division of DSA and can be partnered by anyone. Dancers will be restricted to restricted costuming and routines for these events. We believe that Dancing Studios are the cornerstone of our industry and are fully aware that our event would not exist without their support. That is why we are offering a 'Top Studio' prize purse of $600, to be awarded for the top three ranked studios ($300, $200, $100) based on the entries in the Medalist section associated with each studio. Each competitor in the Medalist section will be asked to assign themselves a studio upon entry, with a point awarded for each back-number, these points forming the ranking for the purpose of this prize. In order to encourage the formation of new same-level partnerships, back numbers for COUPLES entered into the Medalist section will earn their associated studio 3 points. But what would a judging panel be without a fiery red-head? Joining the panel for the first time in 2020, the charismatic, versatile and tenacious:... Linda Brown "Linda was 4 times Western Australian Professional Latin and Ballroom Champion and 5 times WA Exhibition Champion. An Australian Open Professional finalist 4 years in a row in Latin and Ballroom and an twice an Australian Exhibition Champion. Linda was invited to dance in the Exhibition section at the Open British Championships in 1986. She placed 8th in the British Rising Star Professional Latin Championships and 20th in the Professional Open Latin. 22.01.2022 A local gal, born and bred in Perth; Joanne started competing in Ballroom competitions at age 10 and found great success early on, becoming an Australian Juvenile and Junior Champion. Jack, more late to the party, started dancing at the ripe old age of 13. He quickly became enthralled by the Ballroom world and much to the distress of his parents, told them that at age 13, having danced for six months in kids classes and completed two medals exams, that he was prepared to lea...ve high school and pursue the life of a professional dancer. He was particularly captivated by one of the helpers in his class, a young Juvenile Australian champion named Joanne... In 2009 Jack & Joanne began their partnership , and that partnership continues on today. Jack and Joanne take their dancing across the world (when not in lockdown); competing and training with the best that the globe has to offer. Turning professional in 2017, they now takes great pleasure in their work as dancing coaches as well as more recently, adjudicators, in addition to competing and demonstrating. Jack & Joanne are also the organisers of the Zahira Crystals Perth Ballroom Challenge and are extremely excited to welcome competitors to our event; organised by dancers, for dancers. 21.01.2022 We are pleased to introduce to you the Chairman of Adjudicators at the Perth Ballroom Challenge. This statesman of Ballroom Dancing has the experience, knowledge and expertise to help ensure a smooth, fair and enjoyable event. Derek Gatley OAM Derek was born in Kalgoorlie on the 24th August 1939 to parents Les & Eileen Gatley. Derek commenced dancing at 17 years of age because his sister Anne, needed a partner to attend a Nurses Ball being held later that year.... His competitive career commenced in 1957, only a year after he embarked upon lessons, firstly partnering Gemma Foxwell, then changing to Gail Chipper with whom he won numerous local & WA titles including the State Ballroom title of 1961. A fond memory of Dereks was competing against Peter and Shirley Roby, the defending State Ballroom Champions (1960) and taking the 1961 title. That same year saw Derek and Gail chosen as Western Australian Ballroom representatives to the Australians and later that year, Derek decided to turn professional. In 1963, Derek joined forces with Pamela Bidstrup and continued on his professional career as both a competitor and coach/teacher. January of 1966 saw Derek and Pam marry and with only a couple of days grace, embark upon their first of many trips to London, upon the ship, the Oriana. Spending a little over 6 months in England, they were delighted to study under the likes of Alex Moore at Kingston on Thames, Elizabeth Romain, Bill & Bobby Irvine and also Nina Hunt. During their time in England, Derek and Pam travelled to Germany to compete in the 1966 World Professional Ballroom Championships at which they were to proudly achieve semi final placing against the Worlds best. Taking the title of the Australasian Professional Ballroom Champions at Canterbury Court in 1968, saw them retire from competition after which in 1972, Derek and Pam took over the management of Murray Street branch of Wrightson Dance Studios, holding this post until 1984, when they focussed their efforts again back at Hay Street. Derek continues in the executive roles of Chair of Rules Commission and Chief Financial Officer for DanceSport Australia, taking on both positions from 2009. 2009 saw Derek Gatley recognised by his country, receiving The Order Of Australia on the Queens Birthday Honours List for his dedication and commitment to the Dancing Industry in Australia. Further to his delight at becoming a Father, firstly to Darren then a couple of years later to Larissa in the mid eighties, Derek & Pam are now thrilled to be devoted and doting Grandparents. Pictures also supplied by Jack ...& Joanne. 2020 Zahira Crystals Perth Ballroom Challenge We begin most of the advertising for the Perth Ballroom Challenge with the following: The PBC is our attempt to capture the majesty and magic of Ballroom Dancing that has so captivated both of us during our career. Now having run our event for the third year we feel like we are truly starting to fulfil that vision. It goes without saying that 2020 posed the most unusual and difficult circumstances in which to be an event organiser and is certainly not what we were planning for in our preparations at the start of the year. This year we had to contend with first finding a venue that was still operating to the public and then having to find a second venue once we were told by the management of the first that we could not have the capacity in the hall that we originally booked for. Despite all of these trying circumstances we are so thrilled and somewhat shocked that this year we sold more entry tickets and were able to offer a record $4200 in prize money, sourced from private sector sponsorship. One of our biggest regrets for this year is how much we had to restrict ticket sales in the final two weeks of the event in order to keep to venue capacity restrictions. Tickets in this time were only available to those who were competing or a single parent of a child that was. We lost count of the people that we had to tell they were not able to attend the event, and there were no door sales on the day; we had to turn people away at the door. Of course it is a fantastic problem for any event organiser to have however be assured that preparations are already underway to find somewhere larger for 2021. We had a long day of dancing, with events commencing at 10am and the last presentations starting at 8pm, although the feedback appears to be that competitors and audiences do not mind the long day providing there is an engaging and exciting program of events throughout. We operated with a single panel of adjudicators, almost all qualified in the three styles, throughout the day. All highly experienced and credentialed professionals, as event organisers we have found this single panel system is preferable for us, this group becoming a feature of the event itself and audiences connecting with the personalities and back stories of our judges. By having a smaller panel it also allows us to completely change the panel each year, not one judge from 2019 officiated this year, something which is often remarked and appreciated by the competitors. A strength of our event is the private sponsorship we are able to attract. We believe this is in big part to our model of giving all sponsorship contributions back directly, dollar for dollar, to the couples. Our sponsors seem to be very pleased with the level of exposure the event provides and we have already been able to secure commitments from most of this year’s sponsors for 2021. Although there were fantastic strong and numerous fields across many events this year, with several requiring a semi final round, we are particularly delighted about the Juvenile Latin section on the day. When the event was announced and 10 graded Juvenile couples took to the competition floor the response from the audience was atmospheric and almost brought a tear to the eye of some of the more invested members of the audience to see such a sign of strength in the future of our beloved form of dance. As much as we would love to run events every weekend, staging such a feat takes an enormous toll on a person, on their physical well being, personal relationships and professional lives and so we wait until 2021 to bring to life the ideas cooking up in our head. Until then there are many more fabulous Ballroom Dancing events on the WA calendar and if the 2020 Zahira Crystals Ballroom Challenge is anything to go by there will be no lack of enthusiasm and energy from the community to attend these events. We are shattered today, with Jack having a few more grey hairs than he did on Friday, but our efforts pale in comparison with those of the fantastic team of volunteers that worked around the... clock to make this day possible. 08.01.2022 MEDALIST EVENTS - TOP STUDIO This year at the Zahira Crystals Perth Ballroom Challenge we debuted a medallist section of events. It was a great competition with individual and couple medallist competitors proudly representing their studios. As a sign of recognition of the support we receive from local studios, the PBC has sponsored $600 (1st $300, 2nd $200, 3rd $100) to be awarded to the 'Top Studio" based on entries in this section. ... Individual back numbers were awarded one point each and couple back numbers awarded 3 points. 07.01.2022 A local gal', born and bred in Perth; Joanne started competing in Ballroom competitions at age 10 and found great success early on, becoming an Australian Juvenile and Junior Champion. Jack, more late to the party, started dancing at the ripe old age of 13. He quickly became enthralled by the Ballroom world and much to the distress of his parents, told them that at age 13, having danced for six months in kids classes and completed two medals exams, that he was prepared to lea...ve high school and pursue the life of a professional dancer. He was particularly captivated by one of the helpers in his class, a young Juvenile Australian champion named Joanne... In 2009 Jack & Joanne began their partnership , and that partnership continues on today. Jack and Joanne take their dancing across the world (when not in lockdown); competing and training with the best that the globe has to offer. Turning professional in 2017, they now takes great pleasure in their work as dancing coaches as well as more recently, adjudicators, in addition to competing and demonstrating. Jack & Joanne are also the organisers of the Zahira Crystals Perth Ballroom Challenge and are extremely excited to welcome competitors to our event; organised by dancers, for dancers. 07.01.2022 EARLY BIRD TICKETS SOLD-OUT We did warn everybody... There has been such a great response to early-bird ticket purchases for the Zahira Crystals Perth Ballroom Challenge that we don't have any more left. You have shown that everyone is ready to get back into watching some fantastic Ballroom Dancing, in fact we have sold far more tickets this year than at the same time last year. ... In order to ensure all competitors have access to the event we are temporarily closing off ALL ticket sales. Any who plans on competing will need to please email us [email protected] in order to arrange tickets for the day. These will only be available to the actual competitor or a guardian in the case of younger competitors. Closer to the event, once we have ensured everybody competing has a ticket we will assess if we are able to sell anymore to the general public whilst still maintaining our restrictions on venue capacities. It is a great problem to have and thank you to everyone who has purchased a ticket so far.
