24.01.2022 Researchers from North Carolina State University have found a very high prevalence of Bartonella bacteria in tumors and tissues -- but not blood samples -- taken from dogs with hemangiosarcoma, a cancer of the blood vessels. 20.01.2022 Press Release from Aussie Ark Aussie Ark Officially Opens Its 400 Hectare Barrington Wildlife Sanctuary -Joe Thompson from the Department of Biodiversity and Conservation and Chris Chapman of FAME officiated the opening of the wild sanctuary... -The fenced sanctuary is free of introduced feral predators such as the cat and fox -Following a decade of conservation work the team is ecstatic to have opened the sanctuary Conservation organisation Aussie Ark’s fight against Australia’s extinction crisis has led to the official opening of its 400Ha Barrington Wildlife Sanctuary. Aussie Ark President Tim Faulkner stood next to Aussie Ark staff, partners and Joe Thompson from the Department of Biodiversity and Conservation, to celebrate this milestone. The long-awaited moment has finally arrived! We are delighted to officially open our biggest sanctuary yet, says Aussie Ark President Tim Faulkner. Returning native species to an area they once roamed is an important part of what Aussie Ark stands for. We have a unique opportunity to rewild Australia - one we won’t pass up The Barrington Wildlife Sanctuary encloses 400 hectares of wilderness and is primarily made up of open forests and grasslands. Aussie Ark aims to protect and preserve the habitat within the sanctuary through the removal of noxious weeds, habitat augmentation and of course in the return of lost species. The fencing of the Barrington Wildlife Sanctuary was completed as of November 2019, in addition to the removal of feral predators such as the cat and fox from its perimeters. Without the threat of introduced predators, Australian native species are given the opportunity to survive and thrive in an environment that was once theirs. Despite the sanctuary being officially opened as of November 2020, many animals have been released into it over the past year. Aussie Ark has a vision of creating a long-term future for Australia’s threatened wildlife and aims of rewilding the Barrington Tops returning a suit of missing mammals’ species back to the landscape. Donate today to aussieark.org.au to support the organisation’s vision. Aussie Ark As a not for profit organisation, Aussie Ark raises the necessary funds to continue its ambitious vision. Investment allows for the construction of captive facilities and predator-proof fencing on semi-wild parcels of land. Aussie Ark is a registered environmental organisation and charitable institution under the Australian Charity and Not-for-Profit Commission. Aussie Ark has deductible gift recipient status (DGR status) and is registered for GST purposes. More information at www.aussieark.org.au Photos credit: Aussie Ark

12.01.2022 Press Release from AMRRIC - Animal Management in Rural & Remote Indigenous Communities AMRRIC supporting remote communities to treat dogs threatened by new tick-borne disease... Not-for-profit organisation Animal Management in Rural and Remote Indigenous Communities (AMRRIC) provides much needed supplies, support, education and veterinary services to animals in communities throughout Australia. However, the impact of COVID-19 has provided additional challenges to reaching and servicing these communities. Pandemic restrictions has meant roughly 27,500 dogs have had reduced access to veterinary services and parasite protection some, like those inaccessible during wet season, have had absences of vet services for more than 12 months! To make things even more difficult, a rare and life-threatening tick-borne disease affecting dogs, Ehrlichiosis, was discovered in the Kimberley in May, and has since been detected in other regions in WA, as well as throughout the NT. However, thanks to support from PETstock's charity PETstock Assist and Boehringer Ingelheim (manufacturers of NexGard), animals in remote communities will now have access to: - 3,000 NexGard treatments a highly effective anti-parasite treatment targeting ticks, fleas and mange; and - $10,500 of food and enrichment products.
