24.01.2022 WHAT STAFF ARE READING: Martin Luo Book: 'Reading with Patrick: A Teacher, a Student, and a Life-Changing Friendship' by Michelle Kuo... Comment: A Harvard graduate teaching in one of the poorest counties in US... After meeting and solving one after another troubles, she finally decided to quit. Just kidding, it's a very loving story. A bit idealistic even. Still, at the end of the day everyone has to move on to their "normal" life. This gets me thinking how much difference to the society could education make. I guess everyone would have a different answer after reading this book.

20.01.2022 2011 alum Maddie Poussard credits her science teacher Mr Schorback for her decision to pursue the sciences as a career. Maddie, who is now working in the ni...che area of research into chicken vaccines, has never wavered from her dual loves of animals and science. Following these passions has taken her to employment at Disney World’s Animal Kingdom, and to Vietnam, where she volunteered in a primate sanctuary. Maddie, who is presently completing her Masters in Animal Science while working full-time as a lab technician, is a great inspiration for our students. Thanks so much Maddie, for sharing your story with us. FAVOURITE MEMORIES OF YOUR SCHOOL DAYS? Year 12 was probably the most memorable year. Mostly because it was stressful and the anticipation of finally finishing school and moving into adulthood. Although, one memory that really stands out is helping with the school production of Labyrinth in Year 12. I didn’t actually do theatre studies, but a lot of my friends did, so I ended up helping out backstage. It was great and I had so much fun, and basically became an honorary member of the theatre studies class. YOUR FAVOURITE TEACHER AND WHY? My favourite teacher was Mr. Schorback who taught me in Year 11 and 12 for biology. He was brilliant. He made his classes fun and inspiring and nurtured my interest in biology. He ran extra study sessions, which were fantastic and extremely helpful. He probably played a major role in my eventually pursuing science as a career path. WHAT JOB OR COURSE ARE YOU DOING NOW? I am working full-time as a laboratory technician, doing research and development for a company that manufactures vaccines for chickens. It’s pretty specific but I love it. I am also completing a Master’s degree in Animal Science. A SUMMARY OF ANY OTHER EXPERIENCES THAT HAVE LED YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW. Looking back I realise I’ve done a lot since high school. I guess that can happen in almost 10 years. After high school I started a Bachelor of Nursing at Deakin University. A year into that and I decided that nursing wasn’t really for me, so I transferred into a Bachelor of Science (majoring in Zoology). This was definitely a better fit. I got to do some pretty cool things at uni including going to Vietnam to volunteer in a primate sanctuary. After graduating, I moved to Orlando, Florida, and worked at Walt Disney World, as part of a six-month internship program for international students. I was based at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, which is one of their four major parks. It was one of the most amazing (and scary) things I have ever done. When I returned to Australia, I felt I needed more experience in animal husbandry for the career path I wanted, so I started a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, and while studying, got my current job as a lab technician. I have since completed my Cert IV and continue to work as a lab technician, and have gained skills and learned techniques such as microscopy, post-mortem examination and DNA extraction. I also got involved in study planning, which is when I discovered my passion for research. So, I decided to go back to school (yes, again) for postgraduate study, and I began my Master of Animal Science. GOALS FOR THE FUTURE? I’m not quite sure what the future will bring, but at this point in time my goal is to become a scientist and maybe specialise in ornithology (the study of birds). BEST ADVICE YOU COULD GIVE TO CURRENT STUDENTS? The main thing I would say to my 18-year-old self is that high school - and especially year 12 - is not the be all and end all. It is okay if your plans don’t work out. Things will change and that’s okay. Give yourself time to learn and grow. I thought I wanted to be a nurse for most of my VCE but when I actually got there, I just knew it wasn’t for me. So I found something I loved and was good at (science) and ran with it. I suppose that’s my advice: find something you love, seize as many opportunities as you can and through hard work and perseverance you’ll get where you need to be (even if that place isn’t what you originally planned). 10.01.2022 As a year 12 student, 2017 alum Lidia Boniwell could never have imagined for a moment she’d be writing professionally for a high-end online design publication a...nd magazine in just three short years. Despite her love of reading, writing and English, Lidia felt incredibly lost during her last year of school. She had a strong affinity with creative subjects, taking on Vis. Comm., Drama and Theatre in VCE, but had absolutely no idea where her true strengths lay. Lidia has taken the time to share the story of how she’s come full circle. She shares her insights on the importance of following your gut instinct, and why you should thoroughly research your university options. Lidia has also created a four-minute video reaching out to our current students, which will be posted later today. Check it out, and inbox, message or email us at [email protected] to join Lidia and our other brilliant alumni, who are part of our PCSSC alumni community. FAVOURITE MEMORIES OF YOUR SCHOOL DAYS? My favourite memories would have to be the whole of year 12. Although insanely overwhelming at times, nothing has since compared to that buzz of the last month where you’re so excited, eager and emotional to finish. YOUR FAVOURITE TEACHER/S AND WHY? Mr Damschke - hands down. Although he has since left, as my year 12 English teacher he saw something in me that I didn’t. His consistent encouragement and genuine interest in my work gave me the confidence to pursue a career in writing, WHAT JOB OR COURSE ARE YOU DOING NOW? I work full-time as an editorial assistant at estliving, a publisher of architectural and interior design content. I produce weekly written content, and you can check out some of my work here: https://www.estliving.com/author/lidia/ WHAT ELSE DID YOU DO AFTER SCHOOL? I was employed as an interior design consultant for 18 months at an interior design showroom in South Melbourne while studying a Diploma of Interior Design. Helping clients choose their colours and help in the process of building their dream homes from scratch was such a pleasurable experience. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE DOING NOW? I am lucky enough to work in a great team with six others in a beautiful studio in the heart of Prahran filled with design resources. I feel so honoured to have the privilege of writing on such incredible architecture and interiors. WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU COULD GIVE TO CURRENT STUDENTS? As cheesy as it sounds, the saying: if you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life is 100% true. Focus on your strengths and what you’re good at. Don’t worry about what other people think; put your head down, work hard and do it for you only.

08.01.2022 STAFF READING RECOMMENDATION- Maxim Haslett Book: 'The Grapes of Wrath' by John Steinbeck Comment: John Steinbeck is probably the writer I come back to the most and 'The Grapes of Wrath' is widely held to be his greatest work. Discover it for yourself. PS- If you enjoy John Steinbeck, 'The Winter of Our Discontent' is also well worth searching out.

06.01.2022 WHAT STAFF ARE READING: Michelle Foot our English leader/Senior Literacy teacher recently read Two Can Keep a Secret by Karen M. McManus. Read what she had to say about it: Two dead Homecoming-Queens. Five years later. Is the Killer back?... This gripping story is set in a small town US high school. There are two unsolved murders in the town and history seems to be repeating itself when the current popular students begin to be targeted with threatening messages. The narrative switches between Ellery (a twin who has just moved to the town) and Malcom (step-brother of a potential murder victim), giving the reader both a new and old perspective of key players in the novel. I found this to be a riveting, fast paced story with a completely unexpected twist at the end. Highly recommended escapism novel for anyone who wants be thoroughly entertained during lockdown! Thanks, Michelle!

02.01.2022 Wednesday September 2, 2020: National Health & Physical Education Day. Health & Physical Education (HPE) Day is a nationwide initiative that highlights the importance of HPE in the Australian Curriculum, and its influence on the learning and development of children.... The Australian Institute of Health & Welfare reports these facts. In 2017/18: 25% of children and adolescents (2 to 17) were overweight or obese 67% of adults were overweight or obese 31% of all Australians were obese up 12% from 1995 It is estimated that there will be $88 Billion additional costs to the Australian economy in the 10-year period 2015 to 2025, if no action taken to slow the rise of obesity. Schools and teachers play a critical role in teaching Australian children the benefits of leading an active and healthy lifestyle. Along with parents, the community and government, the obesity trend line can be changed. To help reverse the trend, we need to ensure that quality health and physical education (HPE) is being delivered into our primary and secondary schools. HPE is one of the eight learning areas in the Australian School Curriculum. Research shows that childrens participation in physical activity leads to better student engagement, improved academic achievement, and better health outcomes in adult life. HPE can help change the upward obesity trend. At Point Cook Senior Secondary College we have a variety of activities available to you to so you can celebrate #HPEday while adhering to the Stage 4 Covid-19 Restrictions. 01.01.2022 WHAT STAFF ARE READING: Vanessa Riley Book: 'B Is for Bauhaus: An A-Z of the Modern World' by Deyan Sudjic Comment: Deyan Sudjic, the director of the Design Museum, explores an eclectic mix of design topics from Bauhaus (or, bauhaus as it was supposed to be written) to the modern car. He finishes the book discussing the Zip-er-Up, or what you might be used to calling a zip! A really interesting read for the design conscious.
