17.01.2022 When we first wandered through the rambling grounds of the Abbotsford Convent 10 years ago, we had no idea of the treasured community of friends, family, mentors, students and professional colleges that would coalesce quietly around us. This year we wanted to celebrate our decennial and the opening of our new dedicated teaching studio @melbourneclay by gathering as many of you together as possible so that we could express our gratitude for helping us to keep our little potter...y@Porcelume @cone11ceramics afloat. But instead, we now find ourselves alone, just the four of us kicking around in the beautifully manicured, but uncharacteristically empty gardens of this sanctuary. We are lucky, we are in the privileged position of being well supported through this time by the staff and management of The Abbotsford Convent @abbotsfordconvent so that we can continue to keep our hands dirty and our minds amused. We look forward seeing you all soon so we can compare notes and finally pop the corks on all that champagne. See more

12.01.2022 I first met Owen Rye on the 22 May 2016. I had been part of a small wood firing workshop at Monsalvat that was being run in conjunction with a wood firing exhib...ition curated by Skepsi. Owen, one of the exhibitors in the exhibition, wondered down to see what alterations his dear friends Kurt and Yuri and this motley crew of complete novice kiln builders had made to a small wood kiln Owen had built a few years earlier. I had heard all kinds of things about this Owen guy, he was a bit of an enigmatic legend in the pottery world. A teacher, a researcher, a maker, a published writer with PhD. So I nervously made an attempt to strike up a conversation. He was reserved and gave short careful replies. What I didn’t know at the time was that Barberra, Owen’s love of 30 years had recently passed, and it was a despondent Rye that I had met, not an unsocial one as is the terribly wrong impression I got on the day. A legend but yet still just a man at heart. The clay community is a small one and our paths crossed in both the virtual and real world. It has been a privilege to slowly get to know a quite different Owen to the man I first met. Still self-effacing but generous with this knowledge and straight to the point yet always warm hearted and a little checky and almost always with a Rye smile. With much gentle persuasion this legend of Australian ceramics has graciously agreed to open our Sundays In Conversation Series, a monthly informal presentation/conversation with some of Australia’s respected ceramics practitioners. This is a rare opportunity to take an intimate journey with each artist into their distinctive world of making with insights into how they have all carved out thoroughly individual and unpredictable paths to success. The style of presentation will be casual and conversational with discussion and reflection welcome amongst all participants. I hope you can join me in conversation with Owen Rye to better get to know this elder statesman of the Australian ceramic community and his 56 years in clay. 05.01.2022 Cone 11 Ceramics + Design Studio's Colin Hopkins describes his work as being somewhere between pottery and modernist industrial design and comes from a desire... to make large wheel formed objects. This requires incredible skill, not only to such large pieces in porcelain and fine white stoneware, but then to manage through the drying and firing stages. Having a background as an architect underlies his interest in lighting and how it affects space and being a jazz musician influences the rhythm of his creative process. You can see some of Colin's work in the Clay Intersections exhibition, on show now at the Gallery. 01.01.2022 Over the last 12 months I have developed a collection of personal works to be exhibited in a group show titled Layered at Skepsi gallery @skepsigallery, along with @kevinboydceramics @amykennedyceramics Malvern Artists Society Gallery Studios, 1297 High St, Malvern Victoria 7th Sep - 22nd Sep 2019... Informed by my experience as a practicing architect and musician, these sculptural vessels, are created from a variety of interlayered clay straps. Referencing Korean and Japanese hand building and wheel throwing techniques I stretch an amalgamation of terracotta, stoneware and porcelain clays into the extremely thin, elongated components for construction. After several months of testing many different food additives, I have developed a virtual clay body that is lost during firing. This contributes to the rich eroded textures that are a feature of the work. Based on much deliberation, contemplation and planning away from the studio, my approach to making, by contrast, is quick, spontaneous and physical, making in the same way one might experience an improvised musical performance or simple shared conversation, where little or no editing is possible, and the process remains immediate, loose and fresh. #colinhopkins #colinhopkinspotter #handbuildingworkshop #ceramics #australianceramics #ceramicsworkshop #skepsigallery Check out my personal feed @colinhopkinspotter for more images and details. @ Malvern Artists Society
