21.01.2022 He has put down the mighty from their thrones, And exalted the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, And the rich He has sent away empty. He has helped His servant Israel,... In remembrance of His mercy, As He spoke to our fathers, To Abraham and to his seed forever. Luke 1:52-55

21.01.2022 Some have understood Jesus’ prohibition of swearing or oath taking to be universal, but Jesus Himself submitted to an oath (26:63) and Paul invoked God as his witness in Rom. 1:9. God Himself takes an oath so that we might be encouraged (Heb. 6:17). Jesus is addressing a narrow and misleading legalism that requires a specific oath to make spoken promises binding, implying that trustworthiness in speaking is optional when unaccompanied by a solemn oath. Jesus demands an integrity in speaking such that everything is spoken as though it is under oath. He also prohibits the implicit idolatry of swearing by anything less than God. 15.01.2022 Alone among the religions of the world, Christianity teaches that God does not grade on a curve. If we think that He will let us into heaven if our good deeds outweigh our bad, we are sadly mistaken. One sin is enough to banish us from His blessed presence forever. Though most of us likely confess this truth with our lips, getting it into our souls takes a lifetime. May we recall God’s perfect holiness and our desperate plight so that we never trust in our own works to set us right with Him.

15.01.2022 Introduction: To rightly interpret this passage we must remember its contextA people going through trials and extreme hardship - 1:2-4; 5:7-11 This passage is primarily addressing the matter of prayer -not healing 1: Prayer and Comfort: 13 When suffering evil treatment we are to take it to the Lord - 1Pt. 5:7 We are to be continually pleading to the Lord in prayer - 1Th. 5:17 When we are happy - well in spirit we are to sing to the Lord! ... 2: Prayer and Restoration: 14-16a A step further than the suffering of v. 13. A totally wearied believer A: Prayer and the Elders: 14-15 Sick in v. 14 is better translated to be weak, without strength- cf. in epistles - Rom. 14:1-2; 1Cor. 8:8,11-12; Rom. 5:6; 2Cor. 11:21 They are commanded to call the elders to come and pray for them Sick in v. 15 is better translated weary - Rev. 2:3; Heb. 12:3The promise is they will be restored - raised up spiritually again! Notice it says if v. 15 - not all sickness is related to sin! B: Prayer and Fellowship in the Church: 16aThe importance of praying for one another in the churchThe healing carries the concept of spiritual wholeness - Lk. 4:18 3: Prayer and Power: 16b-18 The background - 1Kgs. 17 - the illustration used here make the point - The outpouring of the blessing of God - just what is needed Prayer is a great privilege - we are all called to be a people of prayer Conclusion: Are we living in communion with the Lord & labouring in prayer? Think of such promises as: 1Jn. 5:14, Eph. 3:20-21Do you have Camel’s knees?

13.01.2022 For He who is mighty has done great things for me, And holy is His name. And His mercy is on those who fear Him From generation to generation. He has shown strength with His arm;... He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. Luke 1:49-51

09.01.2022 Moses reminds us that while the life of man is frail and short, God is eternal. Before the mountains were brought forth or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God (v. 2). Moses takes us back before God created the earth to remind us that our God is before and beyond time and this world. He has always been, and He is sufficient to Himself without us. Moses makes this point in another way in verse 4: For a thousand years in yo...ur sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night. Time does not have the same meaning for God that it has for us. For us, a thousand years is a time so long that we cannot really imagine experiencing it. For God, it is no different from a very short period of time. He is eternal, above the time that He created. This eternal God directs the course of history by His infinite power. Moses, who had seen the power of God often displayed in the deliverance of Israel from Egypt, continues to pray that the majesty of God’s works would remain before the eyes of the people: Let your work be shown to your servants, and your glorious power to their children (v. 16). As God had brought suffering by His power, so Moses prays that God will send blessing: Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil (v. 15). If our need is to number our days by contrasting their shortness with the eternal nature of God, then our prayer to God is that He would teach us: Teach us to number our days. We will never learn that lesson in our own strength. We are not only ignorant if left to ourselves, but we suppress the truth in unrighteousness (Rom 1:18). We convince ourselves that we have a long time to live, and as long as we are healthy, we really believe that we will live forever in this body. We need a teacher, and the only teacher who can rescue us from ourselves is God. Speaker: Graeme Hulls, Amazing Grace Radio

04.01.2022 Introduction: A passage of evangelical urgency and pastoral concern There will be times when professing Christians wander from God Note the connection of these verses with those proceeding them James tells us what our attitude should be to those wandering away This passage in many ways parallels Galatians 6:1... 1: Professing Christians May Wander From The Truth The wandering from the truth regards a departure from the faith Wandering doctrinally and/or morally is often intertwined The warning of the professing church going into error - Matt. 7:13-14 - Acts 20:28f; Heb 3:12-13; (Gal 1:6-9; 2 Thess 2:10) 2: The Church must Remember it is a Restoring Fellowship Our job is not to be head hunters but seekers of the lost To seek after those wandering is for all the spiritually minded - It is not limited to the elders of the church - It is for those who are spiritual to do it - Gal. 6:1 God forgives their sin - we are to treat them as such! - 2Cor. 2:3-11 Application: How are we to help those who have wandered from the truth - We must do so because we love them - We must be conscious of our own shortcomings, - Matt 7:1ff; 1Cor. 10:12 - In gentleness, as you would like people to be with you - Gal. 6:1; Phil. 4:5; Prov. 10:12; 1Pt. 4:8

03.01.2022 And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her house. Now Elizabeth’s full time came for her to be delivered, and she brought forth a son. When her neighbours and relatives heard how the Lord had shown great mercy to her, they rejoiced with her. Luke 1:56-58
