23.01.2022 Resource Guarding. It’s one of those subjects that I get asked about a lot. There’s no hard and fast rule to fix it, there’s no one method that will be perfect - and it’s always something to manage long term, but to make it easier just make it a normal routine. Connor, although the best dog on the planet, came as a pretty bad resource guarder. He would leave his food/bones to have a go at any dog in sight. He was even that bad he tried to take another dogs food at times. If... your dog does similar, especially to people, reach out to a trainer. Immediately begin feeding your dog seperate and remove anything high value whilst you reach out to a trainer. Some dogs will just always be easier to feed separately from other dogs/people. Crates, seperate rooms, inside vs outside etc are some really good management systems. For others, it may be that we can ensure they have an understanding about appropriate behaviours about food - but always under supervision. I’ll never trust Connor unsupervised around dogs, but, I will continue for him to get used to them being around without him feeling threatened. All dogs here understand appropriate behaviours and ensure they keep their distance. If you have any concerns, shoot me a msg

23.01.2022 "To love one's brother as one does oneself is one of the most beautiful commands of Christianity, though there are few men or women able to live up to it. A faithful dog, however, love its master much more than it loves itself and certainly more than its master ever can be able to love it back. There certainly is no creature in the world in which "bond behaviour," in other words personal friendship, has become an equally powerful motivation as it has in dogs" Konrad Lorenz, 1975.

22.01.2022 This is great!!

21.01.2022 Reducing stress. This is one of my favourite aspects about behavioural rehab. In very basic terms, stress causes an increase in cortisol in the bloodstream, which causes increases to heart rate and blood pressure. This will likely cause a noticeable difference in your dogs, and one of the main ones is the dogs appetite is switched off. This is a natural occurrence once a dog has entered the "Flight or Fight" response. There are a range of Trainers who will spout things like "...Continue reading

20.01.2022 Reminder to all: Check over your dogs daily. Connor sprouted a new growth this week, and I only noticed because I do a rub down every night and check his body for changes, lumps, bumps, tenderness, ticks etc etc. Luckily it is completely benign, but if it wasn’t and I wasn’t rigorous with checking, the position means it could of been missed very easily. Picture because who doesn’t love looking at Connor!

15.01.2022 I cannot wait to start playing with puppies again!

14.01.2022 Today my husband and I with our two guide dogs had another near miss with an electric car. We were crossing a side road and it came in off the main road and pas...sed very close in front of us. If it’d been a petrol or diesel engine, or if it’d had a sound emitter fitted, we’d have heard it, but, apart from the sound of the tyres on the road, it was virtually silent. I am a confident guide dog handler but I can honestly say that silent electric vehicles scare me. I fear that it will take serious injury to a blind person, or even worse, death, before any meaningful legislation is put into place. If it happens to me or someone that I care about, I’ll be in court and I won’t rest until we have justice. So please, if you drive an electric vehicle, switch on your sound emitter. After all, you wouldn’t drive at night without your lights on, it’s the same thing. Many people will like this post but please don’t. I ask anyone who would have hit the like button to please hit the share button instead and pass this far and wide. I fear for our lives and those of these two amazing dogs.

11.01.2022 Good way to save water!

10.01.2022 The biggest cause of frustrations between owners and young dogs is unrealistic expectations. This is a great post to think on!

09.01.2022 Always the small things in life, hey Slug?

03.01.2022 Raw feeding is as hard as you want to make it! This is my guys variety weekend - which translates to I need to empty out my freezer

03.01.2022 I enjoyed this much less than Slug did.

03.01.2022 According to a study done in 2017, 46% of unclaimed dogs found by councils in Australia were euthanised. The rates for RSPCA is slightly lower at 44%. When was the last time you checked your microchip and council registrations were upto date?

03.01.2022 I know I’ve recommended this food to a few clients. If you are concerned I’d recommend to contact them directly for guidance.

02.01.2022 Ignoring my high quality furniture - this is a really good example of why Trainers advocate to give dogs space while they are sleeping. If a child was to fall on him, or rush past him - what will his first reaction be waking up? Give them a bed in a corner, a couch out of the way, or a crate if necessary to let them sleep peacefully.

02.01.2022 Ever think of changing your dogs diet to something biologically fulfilling as opposed to a mostly vegetarian diet (kibble)? Reach out!
