24.01.2022 The next PMAT field trip will be a metal-detecting trip to Mathinna on the 30th September 2017. You can see http://www.pmat.org.au/event/mathinna-metal-detecting-trip/ for details. Please note that RSVPs are needed for this trip.

23.01.2022 Why does Tasmania have a reputation as a gold-poor State?

23.01.2022 If you want to come to Sunday's PMAT field trip to Weldborough and you haven't let us know yet, I will be in the bush and mostly uncontactable from now until then. There is no mobile reception in the Weldborough area, but I will drive up the hill to check messages once a day. The trip starts at 9:00 a.m. Sunday at the campground at the Weldborough Hotel. http://www.pmat.org.au//field-trip-to-weldborough-gemston/

21.01.2022 The second PMAT field trip and quarterly meeting is coming up on the 7th of May! This time we'll be going to the Moorina Fossicking Area to look for gemstones: sapphires, topaz and zircons. It's the perfect excuse for a weekend away in the beautiful northeast. This field trip is free for PMAT members. If you're not in PMAT yet, why not come over for the field trip and meeting, and join the association on the 7th of May? For more info see http://www.pmat.org.au//field-trip-moorina-gemstone-fossi/

21.01.2022 If you like talking about rocks and minerals, the Tasmanian branch of the Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG) meet in the evening every first Thursday of the month at the Shipwrights Arms Hotel, in Battery Point (Hobart), for informal drinks and chatting about geology-related stuff, including prospecting and fossicking. Their President has kindly asked any PMAT members that are interested to join them for a beer, no need to be a member of AIG, and no fee, just turn up.

19.01.2022 AGM Lafroy trip, 10th March 2018.

17.01.2022 PMAT just had its first AGM and Field Trip at Back Creek on Saturday the 16th and Sunday the 17th of January. For a report on the trip and some photos head over to the link below. If you have photos to share let me know and I'll add them to the report! http://www.pmat.org.au/inaugural-pmat-field-trip/

17.01.2022 Thanks to everyone that made it to the AGM in Lisle last Saturday. One of the issues there were discussions about was the situation in the Weld River Fossicking Area. There have been complaints from people who say they're locals, and recently there have been issues with large amounts of rubbish left at the site. This has recently peaked with large rubbish items such as a washing machine and tyres being thrown in the river. Prospectors have been blamed for this, although I ha...ve a hard time seeing how or why a prospector would bring a washing machine and dump it in the river, compared to a local. Mineral Resources Tasmania are aware of the goings-on. If you see this kind of thing, please let us know. On a separate note, there have been issues with the large amount of tourists visiting this area which has no facilities. We will most likely lobby the council to provide some basic facilities. A quick reminder of the issues: - This is a designated public fossicking area. - The land tenure is crown land. You ARE allowed to camp there, no matter what some may be saying. - At the same time, it's up to you to be aware of the boundaries of the surrounding private property. LISTmap works well for this. - Due to some complaints of damage to banks, MRT will likely soon put up a sign with the rules of the fossicking area. It's your responsibility to be aware of the rules. 16.01.2022 The next PMAT field trip is to Doctors Rocks, near Wynyard, on Sunday 20th of this month (November) to pan for gold. If you're interested in coming please RSVP by Sunday 14th. For details of the trip and contact details to RSVP see the link below. http://www.pmat.org.au/ev/field-trip-to-doctors-rocks-gold/

14.01.2022 Thanks to everyone who came on Sunday's field trip. The weather cleared up and we had a good time at Main Creek. Meanwhile, there was a cool article last Friday on ABC about the modern-day gold rush going on in Victoria. There are tens of thousands of Victorian Miners Rights on issue, and prospecting is bringing in much-needed cash to the local economies of small Golden Triangle towns. If only the Tasmanian Government would realise the tourism potential of fossickers and come out with a more prospector-friendly set of rules and laws! http://www.abc.net.au///gold-rush-central-victoria/7938342

14.01.2022 The Prospectors and Miners Association of Tasmania Inc. held it's second field trip at the Weld River Fossicking Area on Saturday the 7th of May. Thirty or so people made it despite the wet weather on the lead-up, with people arriving and leaving at different times during the day. The week leading up the date of the field trip saw a massive change in the weather from warm and sunny enough to feel like summer, to wet, windy and cold. Some of us were anxiously watching the level of the Ringarooma River at Moorina, ready to pull the plug if it looked like the water might be high enough to be dangerous. As luck would have it, the rain eased off a couple of days before, and the river was back to normal just in time for our trip. http://www.pmat.org.au/pmat-field-trip-weld-river/

13.01.2022 Hi everyone, The weather's taken a turn for the worse and the rivers are a lot higher than they were a week ago, but the trip is still on. We'll be meeting at the Weld River Fossicking Area on the Frome Road bridge over the Weld River, at 9:00 am. If you're coming, make sure you have warm clothes, and preferably waders or a wetsuit. I will have PMAT membership forms with me tomorrow if you're not yet a member. If the weather turns appalling, or otherwise when we're done for the day, we'll head up to the Weldborough Hotel for a few beers. Come and join us! http://www.pmat.org.au//field-trip-moorina-gemstone-fossi/

11.01.2022 The Prospectors and Miners Association of Tasmania has become officially incorporated! Message us, visit our website, or click the 'Sign Up' button above if you're interested in joining up and becoming a member!

10.01.2022 The 2017 PMAT AGM and field trip will take place at Lisle on 18 March 2017. If you're interested in becoming a member, or you'd like to renew your membership, please come along! For details see: http://www.pmat.org.au/event/2017-agm-lisle-field-trip/

10.01.2022 Field Trip to Weldborough The next PMAT field trip will be held in the Weldborough area on Sunday the 23rd of October. This trip is open to PMAT members only (you can join up on the day). Please RSVP by 16th of October. Meet up at the Weldborough Hotel camping ground at 9:00 a.m. for our short regular meeting, then we'll spread out from there. Where we go will depend on the water levels: the rivers could still be quite high after all the rain we've had. For more details see the PMAT website: http://www.pmat.org.au//field-trip-to-weldborough-gemston/

04.01.2022 This post from our Victorian counterparts is mostly applicable in Tassie as well. Except our National Parks are totally out of bounds. In fact even reserves that allow mining are not automatically open to fossickers and prospectors in Tassie. The left hand of Government (MRT) does not talk to the right hand (Parks) and so we get locked out.

02.01.2022 PMAT had its November trip to Doctors Rocks, near Wynyard, on Sunday the 20th. Thanks to everyone who managed to make it on the day. The weather was amazing, the tide was low-ish, and everyone had a good day out. I think almost everyone saw a bit of colour in their pan, the biggest piece I saw was about 3 mm, not bad! There's a short trip report now on the PMAT website here: http://www.pmat.org.au/doctors-rocks-trip-november-2016/

02.01.2022 Happy Eureka Anniversary everyone. It was 162 years ago today that the troopers stormed the blockade and miners were killed in support of their (our) rights. Please take a moment to remember this.

01.01.2022 Good afternoon everyone, In early April, CODES-TMVC and the SEG Student Chapter will be hosting Greg Corbett’s epithermal and porphyry exploration short course ...at UTAS. This is an opportunity you should not miss out on. The course is a distillation of many careers worth of work on porphyry-epithermal deposits, with a focus on important features found marginal to ore. The course cost is HEAVILY discounted - students typically pay $200 to $750, others are doing well if they can attend a course for less than $1000. Kind regards, CODES SEG Student Chapter
