25.01.2022 We know that tea and coffee both contain caffeine, but why does a cup of tea feel really different than a cup of coffee?

25.01.2022 Did you know that light can be used to shift your sleep cycle earlier or later, whether at home or travelling? Applying light at the right times regulates the natural melatonin in your brain so that you don't need to take any from the pharmacy. See the Sleep Calculator and Jetlag Calculator under "Useful tools" on the https://www.re-timer.com website

25.01.2022 You look well! isn’t something you should say to someone with a chronic hidden condition, such as mild to moderate depression or anxiety, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, neuropathy, or a wide range of other mental health and medical conditions. This is because looking well for many is actually part of the problem. Looking well means that people can’t see the physical or emotional pain, fatigue, discomfort and struggle involved in getting through the day. Looking well... means being regarded with the suspicion that they might not really be ill, that they may be faking it in some way to get out of something or because they lack the fortitude to cope with the normal everyday stresses, aches and pains that others have to cope with. Instead, start by finding out how they are with the question, How are you feeling today? or How are your symptoms today? so they can let you know what you can’t see, i.e. whether today is actually a relatively good day or not. 24.01.2022 A lot of things that people commonly consider to be fixed and unchangeable - such as likes and dislikes - can in fact be trained, even taste! In fact, our food likes and dislikes result at least in part from training when we were children, and can be retrained as an adult. You can also change many other likes and dislikes as well, such as exercise, smoking, medical treatments, mental health strategies, even Facebook!

20.01.2022 RUOK? Suicide often has more to do with difficulties solving problems than it does with depression. This can be very important to understand when helping someone who feels suicidal. Rather than trying to make them feel good, it is usually best to help them solve problems.

19.01.2022 Guard your sleep well! It's very important to your mental health and wellbeing!

12.01.2022 I recently saw the post on another forum that "The people on Sydney's north shore and eastern suburbs would never know unhappiness. Their most depressing problem is how to get their monthly Rolex allowance". below on another forum, which contains a common misunderstanding of wealth and mental health. While it's true that people living in poverty are more prone to depression and people with an income above a few times the national average are less prone to poor mental health, in fact, wealth is only very weakly related to mental health. A person with depression who makes a lot of money is generally a wealthier person with depression. The way out of depression is by gaining the mental health skills required, not the acquisition of things. People around the world who have such skills are not depressed, regardless of relative wealth.

10.01.2022 Maintaining both mental and physical health is always a lifelong task for everyone. Some people are lucky enough to have had the opportunity to develop the right kind of habits without having to focus a great deal of attention on them. They may have even acquired those habits so early in life they can't remember learning them, in the same way that most of us can't remember learning to walk. While learning something as an adult is often a much harder, longer and slower process, once learned it requires less effort to be maintained and leads to better quality of life.

03.01.2022 The Relationship Between Stress, Arousal (Cognitive and Somatic), Sleep Quality and Depression and Anxiety - An ANU Research project by Katherine Roche-Freedman, PhD (Clinical) Candidate involving our Director, Dr John Brown, PhD(Clin.Psych) This study is interested in how people respond to their awareness of changes to their bodily sensations (e.g. heartbeat, breathing, digestion), and whether this response is associated with stressful life events, sleep quality, and depre...ssion and anxiety symptoms. It is anticipated that the findings from my research will provide a better understanding of the development of poor sleep quality, depression and anxiety symptoms, and may provide insight into relevant treatments. The survey takes approximately 45 minutes to complete and will require participants to complete it 3 times over 6 months. https://anupsych.co1.qualtrics.com//form/SV_2c87OnrUhMOTZGt

02.01.2022 "Supplying smaller quantities [of opiate medication is] important because although opioids work well in the short term, we know when the duration of use extends beyond the short term, the harms can outweigh the benefits. Opioids don’t work as well after the body adapts to their [initial] effects with long-term use. The dose is often increased to get the same effect, and with an increased dose comes an increased risk of harms, such as fatal overdose.""... the changes will hopefully help people [with chronic pain] in the longer term, as opioids are not always appropriate for chronic pain"
