04.01.2022 Should I soil test after harvest? Soil sampling is important after harvest as it measures which nutrients are lacking or in excess in your paddock. Soil testing should be part of your farm management plan as it has the potential to increase yields, reduce input costs and improve crop quality.... Fertiliser can comprise up to 30% of your farming inputs, so getting the correct fertiliser and application rates can considerably change your gross margin. Treat your soil as if it were your bank account, if you keep taking nutrients away and not putting any back in you will end up with a soil nutrient deficit. Adding more Nitrogen may not be the answer if your sulphur or potassium levels are low, crops won’t be able to access the Nitrogen in the soil profile, later limiting the performance of the crop. Remember, soil sampling gives you a tool to better manage your farm.
