25.01.2022 After 3 years the global Nursing Now Challenge campaign concluded, with Australia marking its closure at Parliament House in Canberra. QNMU member and RN Emma Murphy (pictured right) and QNMU First Nations Strategy, Policy and Research Officer Sye Hodgman (left) spoke at the event about the importance of the campaign in raising the profile of nursing and empowering nurses around the world. Emma said: In terms of #agedcare I think this is fundamentally important as it’s a no...torious undervalued area of nursing. It is a very specialised area of nursing and it is not seen as that, so I think the awareness that Nursing Now Campaign has brought is really beneficial along with everything else that has been going on with the Royal Commission and the Federal Budget," Emma said. Sye said: We are resilient and intelligent. We are definitely the people to be leading not just following what’s been written down. We are the leaders in the profession and we have a real position in leadership. Read more https://bit.ly/3vHr7U8

25.01.2022 QNMU member and Enrolled Nurse Bukky has a message for the Government: Spend a day in our shoes, not just come in for the photo ops. Put on the scrubs, do the work and then tell us you want to cut our pay. Working people like nurses, midwives and health care professionals have been on the frontline carrying Australia through this pandemic. Let's show our support #ForTheWorkers: https://fortheworkers.org.au

25.01.2022 This attack is confronting and deeply concerning. There is never any excuse for attacks on nurses, midwives or any health care or frontline staff. We will continue to work with the State Government to address ongoing issues around violence in the workplace and continue to campaign vigorously for stronger protections and solutions through the Occupational Violence Taskforce, of which the QNMU is a part of and lobbied for. We urge members to report any instances of occupational violence and to seek assistance from us.

25.01.2022 Nurses at Salvos rehab service will safely stop work today to seek long overdue fair wages and conditions. But in an extraordinary and dangerous move, The Salvation Army has reacted by CLOSING its alcohol and other drug rehab and detox services, and turning vulnerable clients away. Nurses are appalled at this act of retaliation which will put patients at risk in a way no planned work stoppage ever would. If you are equally as outraged, leave a message on The Salvation Army Queensland's Facebook page and let them know this isn't OK.

24.01.2022 Midwives what was your experience during #COVID19? Registered Midwives are encouraged to have their say on an important survey looking to explore the experiences of Australian midwives during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings will provide critical insights to guide maternity service preparedness for future pandemics or emergency situations and shine a light on the impact on midwives during this unprecedented time.

24.01.2022 If we have any hope of achieving a healthier, safer, fairer future, every member state must protect and invest in its health and care workforce as a matter of urgency.

24.01.2022 QNMU member Ryanda Prosser was one of the 220 health care workers at Ipswich Hospital who had to go into quarantine earlier this month. She wrote the song "Rona" for her fellow colleagues, to put a smile of their faces and help them get through iso. Via Ryanda Prosser

24.01.2022 Have you asked a colleague "R U OK" today? Our fabulous members from the Central Qld Mental Health Alcohol and Other Drugs branch and their colleagues in Allied Health put on a BBQ today for #RUOK Day. It's so important to take the time and ask the question - especially this year! Let's look out for each other.

24.01.2022 A heartfelt thank you to all nurses and midwives from QNMU Secretary Beth Mohle. You've gone above and beyond this year. Just like you, we're keen to kick 2020 to the curb and welcome 2021 with open arms! We've got a busy year lined up including an exciting new service offering for members, so stay tuned...

23.01.2022 Our fight against #COVID19 isn't over and frontline health care staff are still working incredibly hard to keep everyone safe and healthy. You are not forgotten! We have been informed by the Qld Government stadiums and bridges will be lit maroon tomorrow Sat 26 Sept to thank health care workers for their continued hard work and to mark the start of the State Government's #HealthHeroes Week. If you're out and about, snap a piccie with the lovely maroon lights and share it... with us [email protected] The Gabba Suncorp Stadium Queensland Country Bank Stadium Cbus Super Stadium

23.01.2022 Nurse Unit Manager Janelle Taylor from The Prince Charles Hospital is one of our amazing members on the #COVID19 frontline. She talks about how proud she is of her nursing and midwifery colleagues through these uncommon times... "There is no doubt these are uncommon times and frontline staff across our hospitals, including all my nursing and midwifery colleagues have experienced elevated workloads and associated levels of stress and anxiety. Its a good thing nurses and mid...wives are natural born problem solvers, its what we do. We have a strong desire to keep the community safe. Today and every day I have been focussed on being there for my team of hardworking nurses and our patients. The priority was ensuring we kept our heads above water and offered support to each other during demanding times for our workforce. As messaging and procedures changed rapidly, guided by advice from experts across our health service and around the country, we have adapted along with it, talking clearly to one another about issues like PPE. Its important to remember that throughout COVID-19, we have been treating not only pandemic related patients but expectant mothers, car accident victims, cancer patients, heart attacks and many others all with a heightened sense of fear around their condition and COVID-19. We have worked hard to help keep the friends and families of patients calm and protected. I am so proud of the team at TPCH and nurses, midwives and health care workers everywhere. They have gone above and beyond, putting themselves at risk to help others during this unprecedented event. Qld should be extremely proud of its health system and those who provide care." www.qnmu.org.au/InScope Metro North Hospital and Health Service #MembersOnTheFrontline #InScope

23.01.2022 #Shoutout to our amazing Neonatal ICU nurses who help create miracle families each and every day. #ThankYouNICUDay

22.01.2022 We're in search of passionate and driven activists who are keen to further build on and develop their existing activist skills for use back in their workplace. There are multiple opportunities available within our public, private and aged care sectors in the south-east corner on a temporary full-time or part-time basis for periods of up to six months located in our Brisbane office. 19.01.2022 This thought-provoking article provides a spot-on analysis of how our broken #agedcare system came to be. The author, Sarah Holland-Batt, delves into the raft of issues that has led to our current aged care crisis, including misguided policy-making, a failure on the federal govts part to prepare for an outbreak like #COVID19, and a lack of staffing and skills mix, among others.

19.01.2022 On behalf of the members, council and staff of the QNMU, I pass on my thoughts and sincere condolences to Peter's wife Penny, and his family and comrades at the ETU Queensland & NT. Simmo was a fearless leader who fought hard for working people his whole life. His commitment to social justice and fairness was something to behold. He will be sorely missed but his legacy lives on. - QNMU Secretary Beth Mohle

15.01.2022 "Today I provide care for the so-called ‘worst’ of the community. Ones that the community don’t want to know about. I am a prison health nurse. And my advocacy for my patients is second to none and I take pride in educating my patients. If they can learn one thing from me whilst incarcerated, I can walk proud each and every day."... - Kerry Kynaston, Clinical Nurse, Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre Read Kerry's story at http://bit.ly/3idCBsF #InOurWords #YearOfTheNurse #YearOfTheMidwife

15.01.2022 2020 is about to draw to a close. To say it's been one hell of a year is probably a bit of an understatement! IN ONE WORD, tell us how you're feeling right now as we farewell 2020 and welcome 2021

15.01.2022 "I love nursing! I encourage other migrant nurses to keep looking for opportunities because the nursing profession offers so many." RN Genoveva Phillips is one of our fabulous migrant nurse members whose story we're celebrating this International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife. Genoveva has been a nurse for over four decades and is based at the PA Hospital. Shes also a dedicated union delegate and activist, and credits the late Gay Hawskworth (past Secretary of the QNU)... with driving her passion for advocacy. I remember Gay with her microphone standing at the top of the hill outside the RBWH, encouraging us to speak out about our issues and show everyone that us nurses are strong enough to fight for our rights. She was such an inspiration and after I listened to her I felt so empowered. I encouraged all my colleagues to wear their union shirt and I even got my manager to attend a rally with us. I said to her this is for your safety and my safety and the safety of our patients. I always tell my colleagues its not about one person doing something, its about all of us doing it. 15.01.2022 The QNMU has written to the Chief Health Officer seeking PPE advice be urgently changed so health care workers MUST wear a N95/P2 respirator in areas where there are suspected or confirmed #COVID19 patients. These masks are the best defence we have against transmitting the disease. The stronger guidelines would bring QLD into line with VIC, where N95/P2 masks are mandatory for all staff working directly with COVID-infected patients.

15.01.2022 Gayle's Law was created to ensure no nurse would have to work alone in remote areas but currently SA is the only jurisdiction with these laws. It's time to ensure health services in remote areas of Qld are also required to adhere to stricter rules around unaccompanied out-of-hours callouts in line with SA. #InScope #CPD

14.01.2022 #COVID19 Update: A seventh Ipswich Hospital nurse has tested positive to COVID-19, bringing the total number of health care workers who have contracted the virus to 8. The nurse was already in quarantine when he was diagnosed and continues to quarantine. Deputy Premier Steven Miles says the case poses no risk of community transmission. So far all cases are linked to the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre-Queensland Correctional Services Academy Coronavirus cluster. www.qnmu.org.au/Coronavirus

12.01.2022 Social issues are union issues. ETU Queensland & NT are calling out injustice and racism and so are we. #Solidarity

11.01.2022 Nurses and midwives continue to be on the frontline in our fight against #COVID19, and our nursing and midwifery leaders want to remind you they're here for you and your work is appreciated. #thankyou #FrontlineHeroes

10.01.2022 "it's breaking my heart that we are not able to provide the care that our elders need." 10.01.2022 This beautiful artwork titled 'The turnaround' was sent to us by artist and nurse Els Matthys from Belgium. She said: "After the dark time of exhaustion, frustration and loss, we still have to keep looking for the light and hope... I made this work as a tribute to the medical personnel all around the world." It's a piece that truly captures the essence of why many of us nurses and midwives continue to do what we do. 09.01.2022 #COVID19 update: The Qld govt has announced restrictions on gatherings will ease on the Gold Coast and Darling Downs from today (8am Thurs 17 Sept). 05.01.2022 Congratulations to this year's QNMU Emma Miller Award recipient - Shelley Howe from Mt Isa Hospital! Shelley has been a member of the QNMU for almost 30 years (wow!) and has been a frontline activist for most of that time, supporting members and colleagues at consultative forums, grievance meetings and by giving them the tools required to achieve fairness and equity in the workplace. Well done Shelley and congrats to all the other Emma Miller Award recipients last night.

05.01.2022 We're pleased to have supported our members through 2020 (the mother of all years!), including recovering over $1.6 million in wages and conditions and nearly 50,000 interactions with members via Member Connect. 05.01.2022 Its inconceivable any #agedcare provider would cut nursing staff during a pandemic, when our vulnerable elderly require more care, not less. What's happening in aged care affects all of us, it's only a matter of time. We need your help to call on PM Scott Morrison (ScoMo) to step in and do whats right - #StopTheCuts, make safe staffing law and hold private aged care providers to account before its too late: www.qnmu.org.au/StopTheCuts

03.01.2022 On #RUOK Day yesterday, the Royal Melbourne Hospital launched the Scrub Choir 2.0 with over 400 RMH staff singing "I'll stand by you" as a reminder for health care workers to take time out of our busy schedules and check in with each other. Via The Royal Melbourne Hospital

03.01.2022 Take a look at contemporary dance film 'Becoming', which honours the important work of nurses and midwives, and showcases our experiences in a moving and different way. Filmmaker Dr Lucinda Coleman said the sounds and images of water have been used as a metaphor for the nurses’ becoming: from washing hands, to tears, to immersion in the ocean as representative of the all-encompassing experience of the work of a nurse/midwife." The film was produced by Edith Cowan Universit...y (ECU)'s School of Nursing and Midwifery and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). 03.01.2022 The Salvation Army rehab service is turning away vulnerable clients and refusing to give them beds, all in retaliation of nurses taking legal and safe Protected Industrial Action to seek fair wages and conditions. This will put patients at risk in a way no planned work stoppage ever would. Send The Salvation Army Queensland a message and let them know this isn't OK. More info: https://bit.ly/3l2ooOV

03.01.2022 QNMU Secretary Beth Mohle has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia by the Governor of Queensland for her significant service to the nursing profession, industrial relations, and the superannuation sector. Beth has been a nurse for over 35 years and has worked incredibly hard to advance the industrial and professional interests and values of nurses and midwives in Qld. We are stoked to see her hard work recognised.

03.01.2022 The federal govt and PM Scott Morrison (ScoMo) must take responsibility for the current state of the #agedcare sector. The PM refuses to introduce safe staffing laws in private aged care and as a result, providers have legally been allowed to CUT nurses during the #COVID19 pandemic. Please call on the PM demanding an end to staff cuts and stricter regulation of our aged care system. www.qnmu.org.au/StopTheCuts #StopTheCuts #RatiosForAgedCare #FixAgedCare

02.01.2022 Violence against hospital staff is completely unacceptable. Two staff were seriously assaulted over the weekend when a man being treated in Townsville University Hospital's ED lashed out as they assisted him. We continue to speak out about this issue as well as advocate for stronger protections and solutions through the Occupational Violence Taskforce, of which the QNMU is a part of and lobbied for.

01.01.2022 A global network of health organisations working across 11 countries has issued a powerful statement calling for a health in all policies and systems change approach in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. The statement highlights the essential role of health sector leadership across society.

01.01.2022 #COVID19 update: The Chief Health Officer has released a new #AgedCare Direction (No. 10) which took effect from Friday 11 Sept and included a number of key changes around: Workforce planning and reporting Infection control and PPE training PPE supplies... Documentation of residents' needs, and Access to restricted residential aged care facilities for students in order to complete their placement. More info: https://bit.ly/3kgcykm

01.01.2022 A lack of transparency is protecting providers from reputational damage but it is not in the interests of our elderly Australians and #agedcare staff. We need to know where taxpayer dollars are being spent in aged care.

01.01.2022 It's Thank a First Responder Day! Our first responders, including health care workers and medical personnel, continue to do an amazing job not only through this pandemic but each and every day. Let's take a moment to say thank you.

01.01.2022 We called upon our members to share their amazing stories. And the words of Qld's nurses and midwives in these stories focus us on the why - why we do what we do. 01.01.2022 #COVID19 UPDATE: The QNMU has been working closely with West Moreton Health and Queensland Health on the COVID-19 cases of health care workers in the West Moreton area. Thanks to this positive collaboration, West Moreton Health has clarified quarantine measures for staff. To be extra cautious after the first positive case of a nurse in West Moreton, the Public Health Unit put many staff on full quarantine but additional staff on modified quarantine orders. Now that there has... been more time to complete contact tracing, all staff will either be on full quarantine orders or advised that they are no longer subject to any quarantine. This is much clearer for staff in terms of leave entitlements. N95/P2 masks are also being rolled out with fit checking completed and fit testing to be completed next week. These masks are to be used in all COVID wards and areas where there has been COVID exposure. These quick actions were thanks to positive collaboration between the QNMU, West Moreton Health and the Health Dept, and well continue to work closely on the COVID response.
