23.01.2022 MEDITATION FOR BIG KIDS Following on from the my last post, I can't forget about the big kids, can I?! Most of us know about the power of meditation. It is an amazing way to alleviate stress and maintain good health, even for our kids. ... Through practising meditation, we can actually change our brainwaves and the way we think about and respond to stressors in our environment. However, this will only work if done consistently. Try building meditation into your child's daily routine, it is such a valuable tool for them to use. It could be done in the morning in bed once you've woken up, throughout the day during some downtime, or before bed to encourage sleep. Guided meditations are great for beginners as they give the listener something to focus on and imagine, just like listening to a story. I've compiled this playlist of guided meditations for kids. Enjoy. https://open.spotify.com//lv1vmc24dl74348w6fjwy8azi/playli

23.01.2022 BODY MOVING DURING COVID 19 Getting active is imperative for our health and wellbeing. It's even more important for our kids so they can develop crucial skills and learn about how their body moves through space. Our level of physical activity also has impacts on our gut health (our microbiome), cortisol levels (stress hormone) and serotonin (feel-good hormone.)... My Spotify playlist for preschoolers has some of my favourite action songs to get their bodies moving while they are stuck inside. https://open.spotify.com//lv1vmc24dl74348w6fjwy8azi/playli

21.01.2022 Choosing a school for your future preppy can be tough. It’s easy to get caught up in the spirit of being there and then realize you didn’t actually ask all the questions you wanted answers to. So be prepared - go in with a list of questions. (Teachers love lists, so don’t worry if you think you might look silly, you won’t!) I’m doing the rounds this year for my son. He’s off to a public school, so I’ve prepared a whole heap of questions that will suit and I’m sharing some of them with you here. So feel free to add, edit, delete any of these questions for your list. Happy school touring!

20.01.2022 Last month we had 2 deaths in our family on the same day. Coping with my own grief for the loss of 2 loved ones and supporting my 5-year-old son through it was one of the toughest periods of my life. He understood more about death and the finality of it than I realised. Our conversations have been honest, deep and emotional. To help us along we've used a few books. By far this is my favourite book for talking about life and death. 'Beginnings and Endings with Lifetimes in B...etween' by Bryan Mellonie and Robert Ingpen, explains that there is a beginning, middle and ending to everything that is alive- animals, plants and people. In between is a lifetime. Dieing is as much a part of living as being born. The book doesn't discuss religious perspectives about death or what's beyond death, making it an amazing resource for all families with different beliefs. I highly recommend this book for your home library

14.01.2022 SOUND ADVICE A long read but some really great advice for us adults to get through this.

09.01.2022 Lockdown Blues? Not today! Today we are having a "take it apart" day! We've collected all the broken and obsolete things from around our house - old laptops, broken blender, busted RC ute. My boy loves tools so it's open slather on the screwdrivers, pliers and spanners today. There are learning opportunities in the simplest things and happiness in doing the things they love.

03.01.2022 RECOGNISING EMOTIONS https://readysetlearn.com.au/playdough-feelings-faces/ One of the foundations of understanding how you feel is to recognise emotional facial expressions in yourself and in others.... In the very first class of my resilience program, the children explore how our face changes when experiencing different emotions. We pull apart a heap of emotional expressions and drill down into what each feature of the face is doing: Are our eyes wide, squinting or relaxed? What is our mouth doing? Have our eyebrows changed shape? Are our nostrils flared? Are the muscles under our skin tight or soft? Sooo many questions to ask ourselves! We learn new vocab and reinforce the vocab the children already have to describe what happens to our faces when we are feeling all the feelings. You can do this at home too. I have put together this activity to help you do exactly that. This activity could also be used as a conversation starter to discuss some of the extreme feelings your child (or you) might be feeling at the moment. Enjoy! x https://readysetlearn.com.au/playdough-feelings-faces/

02.01.2022 JOIN US Yesterday I created a supportive Facebook Group to form a community of likeminded parents who want to support their children's (and their own) wellbeing and emotions during this challenging period. These are unprecedented times! We will experience challenges that we haven't faced before. BUT, we are all in the same boat, we are all in this together and I want to help!... My goal for this community is to share what we are all trying with our kiddos to keep them calm, manage their emotions, keep them engaged/entertained/learning, etc. I'd also love for us to share how we are practising self-care to ensure that we are looking after ourselves during this tricky time. I will be sharing my knowledge and expertise that I have gained throughout my 20-year teaching career, particularly in the areas where I specialise: Emotion coaching, social skill development, resilience and wellbeing for kids. Let's make this community as supportive as we can! Let's navigate these uncharted waters together! So come on over and join in with us. xo
