23.01.2022 Write it Down, Make it Happen - Health is No Exception Good health is a matter of priorities and choice - not mere chance. Of course to a certain extent, genetics and other factors over which we have less control come into the picture, however their impact in the face of our daily choices and 'consenting' exposures is minuscule indeed. There's a lot of talk about goals, plans and making things happen. The problem is that often that is where it is all ...Continue reading

10.01.2022 What does mouth breathing and dysfunctional breathing have to do with negative craniofacial development in our children and adolescents and how will that impact on their lives into adulthood? Children who regularly breathe through their mouth tend to develop negative alterations to their face, jaws and the alignment of their teeth. Mouth breathing affects the shape of the face in two ways. Firstly, there is a tendency for the face to grow long and narrow. Secondly, the jaws d...o not fully develop and are set back from their ideal position, thus reducing airway size. If the jaws are not positioned forward enough on the face, they will encroach on the airways (McKeown, 2013). Not only does mouth breathing affect cranial-facial development it also has a flow on effect on learning and behavioural issues, sports performance and long term sleep disorders such as sleep apnea and snoring to name a few of the possible consequences of mouth breathing. See for yourself: close your mouth, jut out your chin and take a breath in and out through your nose, noting the way air travels down behind the jaws. Now do the same but pull your chin inward as far as you can. You will probably feel as if your throat is closed up as you try to breathe. This is exactly the effect poorly developed facial structure has on your airway size. It is no wonder that those with restricted airways tend to favour mouth breathing.
