My initial reaction was great surprise because I’d been thinking a lot about the selection process and how to map out my mid-year here in Perth if I was in fact chosen. I hadn’t heard anything for a while and was only checking e-mails for the result - no way did I think I’d get a phone call direct from Karratha. I actually thought I wasn’t successful so the day I received that call I was ‘elbows-deep’ in paint experimenting with various odd-ball techniques on a new canvas; I rarely answer the phone and especially right now that I’d just out-laid heaps on this new 'you-beaut' phone and I’m notorious for getting paint on my phones so I had a ‘CBF’-answering the phone moment as is my manner but the number looked funny so I was curious and picked it up. I shed a little tear because a lot of sadness had occurred over the last 18 months and this ‘ray of sunshine’ of positivity has given me the chance perhaps to help others follow their hopes and dreams within the Art Industry. I get the chance to show my stuff in what I do best, being creative and helping others, something my Art Teacher instilled in me at a youthful age down in working class Rockingham. My dear old high school art teacher from that suburb taught me really well - the 'don't give a @#$* about what people think' attitude, (can't believe he said that ) - people make lots of money with that concept #thesubtleartofnotgivinga@#$* selling lots of books along the way, he was ahead of his and I miss him Love you Mr. Jane. He made me into an Abstract Expressionist Painter A big thank you to the Western Australian Government, City of Karratha, the Residency Selection Committee and Rio Tinto
