24.01.2022 Can you imagine spending almost 350 hours crocheting 2,060 poppies? That takes a lot of love and dedication! That's exactly what war widow Margaret Standfast di...d for a display in a Townsville shopping centre in honour of Remembrance Day. Margaret, a member of the Townsville RSL Women’s Auxiliary, worked on the project for 5.5 hours every day for nine weeks! Her poppies were added to a long red dress made by a local dressmaker, creating a spectacular train, and others were included on other displays provided by local schools and organisations. We applaud your handiwork Margaret!

21.01.2022 WE NEED YOU - In preparation for the Veteran 400 fundraiser, The Garrison will be constructing a new game zone at Donnybrook Gel Ballers and assisting with infr...astructure repairs. Matt will be on-site and would appreciate some help from Tuesday 6th to Saturday 10th October, so if you could spare some time on any of these days please contact Matt via messenger. To give you an idea of what we’re doing, we will be constructing a series of small timber bunkers (partially dug in), a helicopter crash site and general maintenance. R&R Hire has donated the use of an excavator and other earthmoving equipment to make things easier on our veteran bodies. If you can bring hand and power tools with you on the day this will also be a great help. Cheers Tols

17.01.2022 The poignant words of The Ode of Remembrance will be heard around Australia today as we commemorate Remembrance Day. In recognition of the 75th anniversary of V...ictory in the Pacific earlier this year, we would like to share a very special reading of The Ode featuring six of our members who all served in WWII. Learn more about why we read The Ode at commemorations at bit.ly/The-Ode

17.01.2022 From carrying vital supplies and messages, to being mascots, animals have played important roles in the wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations in which Aus...tralia has been involved. On World Animal Day, we recognise the animals who have worked, and continue to work, alongside our service personnel and have even undertaken tasks that are difficult, if not impossible, for humans. Some have even helped to find people and save lives, and now, psychiatric assistance dogs are helping some of our veterans manage their PTSD. If you know a child in primary school, why not show them the Australian Government Department of Veterans' Affairs publication ‘M is for Mates Animals in Wartime from Ajax to Zep’ https://anzacportal.dva.gov.au//m-mates-animals-wartime-aj. It’s a great primary school resource about the contributions of animals in war and peace operations.

15.01.2022 The War Widows’ Guild this week celebrates 75 years of supporting war widows and widowers around Australia. Now known as Australian War Widows Inc, the Guild wa...s founded by Mrs Jessie Vasey, a war widow herself, as a way to support the 10,000 war widows from the Second World War. Following the first meeting in Melbourne, Victoria, Mrs Vasey devoted the rest of her life to turning the Guild into a powerful and respected organisation, with the sole focus of supporting women whose husbands had died during their war service. Today I acknowledge Mrs Vasey, and all those who have followed her, for their invaluable work and advocacy in support of Australian war widows since 1945. Australia owes a debt of gratitude to the Guild and I know it will continue to provide integral support to Australian war widows, their families and our veteran community well into the future. #TYFYS

10.01.2022 Queensland’s border zone will expand from 1am on Thursday, October 1 to include Byron, Ballina, Lismore, Richmond Valley and Glen Innes council areas. The State Government will be carefully monitoring the expanded border zone between now and Thursday October 1, and if we suddenly see cases appearing in Northern New South Wales then these measures will not proceed.

09.01.2022 It was great to catch up with so many of you today for our social Friday afternoon. Should we be doing this on a fortnightly basis? Let us know what you think!

07.01.2022 The current proposed action to strip all 3000+ Special Operation Task Group (SOTG) members of the Meritorious Unit Citation (MUC) will become one of this nation’s most significant examples of a failure in leadership should the Governor General give his support to the Chief of Defence Force’s request. The collective group are being slandered for the alleged offences of a mere few, those who have yet to have their day in court. The Australian PM and others in senior leadershi...p roles cannot wrongly condemn good people who served honourably, or propose to punish them when they have absolutely nothing to do with the recently released inquiry report. Those SOTG members sacrificed so much, as did their loved ones who waited for their return. Many came home traumatised, physically and mentally harmed, some didn’t come home at all, and many others have suicided since or self harmed. They served with honour and with integrity and we must not forget that, or allow those sacrifices they made to be denigrated. This is extremely distressing for us as a Defence family. My husband and I are providing advocacy and support to serving members and Veterans impacted by this report. CALL TO ACTION We urge all our friends to write to the Governor General, or send a message to your Federal MP and demand they do not remove the MUC from the SOTG. The Meritorious Unit Citation is a collective group decoration awarded to members of Australian military units. It is not an individual award, and so the alleged actions of a few individuals cannot be, in any way, representative of the majority collective. SOTG members bravely served and did not violate any Rules of Engagement and it is their right to have their lawful service respected and to continue to be reflected in our Nation’s history and honourably recorded. 07.01.2022 #OTD Final Japanese air raid on Darwin On the 12th of November 1943 between 0353 to 0530 local time, Darwin was subject to its 64th and final air raid. Fortun...ately, there were no casualties during this raid, although there was slight damage around Darwin near the Parap, Adelaide River and Batchelor airfield. This raid would also mark the final air aid made on Australia during WWII. In total there were more than 97 attacks on northern Australia. Over 260 people were killed and more than 410 were wounded between the 19th of February 1942 and the 12th of November 1943. It is an interesting fact that more bombs were dropped on Darwin than at Pearl Harbour. Lest we forget. --------------------------------------------------------------- If you spot an error, please send me a message. 05.01.2022 Why have veterans died by suicide? This is the question the interim National Commissioner for Defence and Veteran Suicide Prevention, Dr Bernadette Boss, has asked. Our President, Rob Woods, will be speaking directly with Dr Boss in December and this is your time to help us prepare. Your contribution is needed by 9 December 2020 and you do not need to be a financial member of the APPVA to contribute. In fact, if you know of anyone, or any organisation, that would like us to take your words to the Interim Commissioner, copy this link and have your say. Click on this link to read the base questions and then complete in your own time. https://paymeaustralia.snapforms.com.au//veteran-suicide-p
