Interpreting has always been regarded as a highly confidential activity - the profession depends on this as otherwise we would not be trusted in many delicate situations.... Like priests and doctors, we need to feel secure in our right to remain silent and the courts have understood this until now. There are other reasons why it isn’t appropriate. Unlike a normal observer, an interpreter’s concentration is focused on the immediate moment - remembering what is being said and converting it to a different language. This is not a simple task and takes a lot of concentration. One uses short-term memory, remembering a segment briefly and then allowing this memory to fade, immediately turning one’s attention to the next segment. We can’t afford to clutter our memory. This doesn’t make us very reliable witnesses. We aren’t meant to be witnesses, our function is quite different. As for demanding the interpreter’s notes, firstly, these are likely to be incomprehensible as we don’t take shorthand, a prompt for ourselves, not intelligible unless you are the interpreter who took them. Secondly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the interpreter promptly destroyed them - why would an interpreter keep such notes? It’s not our job to keep records of conversations, indeed, quite the opposite, we probably want to forget them. This is such a blatant case of nosy people grasping at inappropriate straws to learn a secret not meant for them. Let us hope that this attempt meats with the thunderous rejection it deserves.
