22.01.2022 In case you are wondering whether to wear a face mask or not, I am sharing some information posted by a dear lecturer of mine, which may help to clarify when it may be appropriate to wear a mask in Australia at the present time. 'Please dont waste masks, not only do they become ineffective after a relatively short amount of time, but they make you more likely to to keep touching your face to adjust the mask because it is terribly uncomfortable, as well as every time you have ...a drink of water or have something to eat. And dont even think about reusing the mask because your hands will hav'e been all over it getting it off and then back on again.. Masks are useful for air pollution (smoke) most definitely, but COVID-19 is spread by droplet which means for the general public to contract it by touching a surface and then touching their face (mouth, noes, eyes especially) that is why we say WASH YOUR HANDS!' - David Casteleijn Thankyou to my mother in-law for making me an adorable washable face-mask, should I find myself requiring one over the coming weeks. *Picture in comments!

16.01.2022 Adam Bell is making the most of time in solitude by writing informative articles, with his psychiatrist view and the view from his balcony! This might explain why we haven't felt our smiley selves lately, as everyone takes a wide berth! Also why it's so difficult to stay out of someones face if you like them a little (or a lot)!

16.01.2022 Cloth re-usable masks may be the way to go, to prevent unnecessary use of sterile single use masks. If Australians adopt wider use of mask wearing to prevent transmission from asymptomatic people, living in heavily populated areas. Here is an update from David on the matter: 'Revisiting the masks thing - with a possible rethink from the WHO I think it is good to understand this in context as context is often very important, if not everything. The wider use of masks in day to... day life is being considered to reduce the transmission *from* asymptomatic people in areas with very high population density where physical distancing is not possible (or much more difficult than it is in a wealthy/developed country like Australia). Apart from times where close contact is essential (medical procedures - especially incubation) masks are unlikely to offer the protection in public people appear to think they do and if anything may provide a false sense of security (which I mentioned previously) which is not helpful. However, if a wider use of masks were to be adopted in Australia, then cloth reusable masks would be the logical option so we are not wasting sterile single use masks which are needed for Health Professionals providing direct patient care.' - David Casteleijn See more

04.01.2022 How much time do you spend each day actually standing up? At a recent seminar on disordered gut terrain, Dr Elizabeth Steels (pictured far left), asked this important and overlooked question. She noticed that many patients recorded waking up and sitting down to eat breakfast, sitting in the car for a commute to work, sitting at a desk at work, driving home, sitting for dinner and t.v time before going to bed. The amount of movement in our daily lives (which affects metabolis...m and faecal transit time), like many lifestyle choices, such as the food we eat (types and quantity of fibre, pre, pro and post-biotics, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, carbohydrates and fats), which is required for breaking down and re-building body parts and tissues), and the drinks we consume (at least 2L of filtered water per day is required for metabolic processes) as well as the amount of stress we're under, all affect the microbiome. The microbiome is important for neurological function as neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine and GABA, are found in the bowels. Immune function is also dependant on gut flora as well as a healthy gut barrier, as many pathogens enter the body through intestinal mucosa and the gut-associated lymphoid tissue GALT is a site for many immune cells. Furthering this, beneficial bacteria in the colon generate nutrients such as B12 which is required for healthy nerves, blood cells and DNA. Today, as I was at home following the governments much needed advice to stay home, I may have only been standing/ moving for about 2hours during a walk to the beach and swim for exercise and Vitamin D (also important for healthy microbiome diversity and immune function), walking from room to room and hanging out the washing. Tomorrow I will aim to get more movement, through having a home yoga class, going kitesurfing if it's windy, surfing if there are waves, and maybe a higher intensity walk/ jog around the neighbourhood. How is everybody else incorporating exercise, movement and time in nature while predominantly STAYING AT HOME?

01.01.2022 Photos from the QLD Freestyle State Titles in the Gold Coast last Weekend. Thankyou to the organisers, well done for everyone who entered and those who travelled to support loved ones. I felt more confident compared to last year (after completing an instructor course) and I got into the finals (although rode pretty ordinarily after accidentally un-hooking on the beach and grabbing the bar instead of the chicken loop!).
