24.01.2022 Thanks to the Sanctuary donor who supplied this bike for an Asylum Seeker family who are doing it really tough and needed a bike so the father could get to work. We appreciated the support of Amanda from Red Cross, who alerted us to the family's situation and transported the bike to them.

24.01.2022 For the start of Refugee Week 2020 in Australia, Sanctuary is sharing the story of Girma, a political refugee from Ethiopia, who spent 10 years in Dadaab Camp, Kenya before being granted a refugee visa under Australia’s Humanitarian Program. In February 2020, Sanctuary provided Girma with an interest-free travel loan so that his wife and daughter could join him in Coffs Harbour, where Girma currently lives and works. Sanctuary is committed to continuing to welcome and support refugees in the Australian community with your help. Click the link in the bio to learn more and support us. You can read more refugee stories and get involved in Refugee Week 2020 at www.refugeeweek.org.au/get-involved/

24.01.2022 The current COVID-19 impacts on the lives of people around the world which necessitates many new precautions and measures to keep people safe from infection. Thank you, Sanctuary Australia Foundation

23.01.2022 We know that most students would have struggled with remote learning, but students from disadvantaged backgrounds will have learnt a lot less, and some will have learnt virtually nothing over that period, said Grattan Institute school education fellow Julie Sonnemann, who authored the report. Sanctuary has continued to support disadvantaged former refugee student's education with the donation of a laptop to allow them and their families fair access to educational resources.... 20.01.2022 Thank you again to all our donors for providing good quality used laptops for former refugee students and their families, assisting them to complete their studies, connect with local services as well as their families overseas. 19.01.2022 Hussein Oso is from Sinjar, Iraq which came under attack from ISIS in 2014. Close family members of his were murdered and others kidnapped for ransom. It has been a terrible experience for the family, who finally arrived in Coffs Harbour, NSW in December 2017. They are so happy to now be in Coffs Harbour. With Sanctuary’s help, including finding the position and taking him for an interview, Hussein has found work locally as a barber. He is very popular with clients and happy ...to be working again. Through the support of his employer, Greg Edwards of the Shearing Shed in Toormina, he has got his Certificate 3 in Barbering. Navigating how to get the qualification was difficult to understand from the view point of a non-English Speaking background Refugee from Iraq, but through patience and careful analysis, Greg was able to assist his new employee to qualify as a Barber, through an online service & support. https://youtu.be/4GdKw-iEOYE

15.01.2022 Sanctuary has been welcoming refugees to Australia for over 30 years. Today is the Internaional Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and we encourage all of the wider community to look for ways that they can be more inclusive of people from a refugee or migrant backgrounds. Racial discrimination can only exist when people are willing to accept generalizations and stereotypes instead of getting to know migrants or refugees as people with challenges, dreams and aspirations just like them. Let's all be kinder to everyone in these challenging times. Let's look for ways to support each other rather than looking for someone or some group to blame for circumstances that may be out of our control.
