23.01.2022 This NAIDOC week 2021 we are celebrating our cultural knowledge and understanding of Country. Country is more than a place. Country we speak about like a person, sustaining our lives in every aspect - spiritually, physically, emotionally, socially, and culturally. This week all Australians can celebrate the rich history, diverse cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the oldest continuing culture on the planet. Heal Country, heal our nat...ion. #scmsac #southcoastams #aboringalhealth #NAIDOC #NAIDOCweek #NAIDOC2021 #NAIDOCNowra #healcountry

22.01.2022 With COVID restricting our regular annual events held up and down our coast, our team used the quieter celebration to reflect on this year’s theme & to hear some local knowledge, history and language from our CEO Craig Ardler. Craig talked about our long history connected to the land, and spoke about the strength and resilience shown by our ancestors both past and present. Reflecting on our local history and yarning with our team and board members renewed our commitment to the wellbeing of our mob and nurtured our pride in our culture - the oldest living culture in the world. #NAIDOC2020

19.01.2022 Happy National @NaidocWeek! Celebrating NAIDOC Week each year reminds us of the ongoing aspirations of our communities and provides an opportunity for us to celebrate Indigenous achievements, history, culture, and survival of the oldest continuing living culture on the planet. Although this year’s COVID restrictions mean we aren’t celebrating with community at our annual event, we are taking the time to reflect on this year’s theme, ‘Always Was, Always Will Be.’ The theme rec...ognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years and celebrates our spiritual and cultural connection to this country. Find out how you can get involved with this year’s activities celebrating the theme ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’ at www.naidoc.org.au #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek #NAIDOC

10.01.2022 There’s no denying it: Asking for help when we need it can be hard, and the isolation that COVID-19 can bring can make it seem even harder. Our wellbeing team are here to make the decision to reach out a little easier for our community and have shared some of their tips below. Our top tips for getting support: - Share a meal with a trusted friend or family member and yarn about things that you are struggling with... - Organise to go for walk with a friend or catch up for a cuppa at times of the day that are particularly challenging for you - Connect with a local support group like our Koori Men’s & Women’s Groups and Youth programs - Have a yarn with a therapist or counselor (we have a great culturally supportive mental health team here that can support you) - Sometimes there will be times when no one’s free to yarn to (or you don’t feel like talking to someone you know) This is a good time to call one of the support hotlines to get you through. You can check out a full list on our website here: https://bit.ly/3jwdm7K

08.01.2022 COMING OF THE LIGHT Did you know Coming of the Light is a holiday celebrated by Torres Strait Islanders on 1 July each year? It recognises the adoption of Christianity through island communities during the late nineteenth century. In July 1871, the Reverend Samuel MacFarlane, a member of the Society anchored at Erub (Darnley Island) in the Torres Strait. He was accompanied by South Sea Islander evangelists and teachers. In defiance of tribal law Dabad, a Warrior Clan Elder o...n Erub welcomed the London Missionary Society clergy and teachers. The acceptance of the missionaries and Christianity into the Torres Strait Islands is often credited with ending conflict between different island groups. However, Christian principles were already somewhat compatible with Islander religion. The missionaries offered a more practical advantage. Torres Strait Islanders had been grossly exploited in the maritime industry. The missionaries provided some protection and assistance to Islanders who negotiated with outsiders in the maritime industry. The acceptance of missionaries and Christianity into Torres Strait led to profound changes that affected every aspect of life from that time onwards. Torres Strait Islanders living on the islands or on the mainland come together to honour this anniversary every year. Islanders of all faiths celebrate the Coming of the Light in a festival like no other in Australia. Activities include church services and a re-enactment of the landing at Kemus on Erub. Hymn singing, feasting and Ailan dans strengthen community and family ties.

01.01.2022 This year is the 13th Anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations. It’s estimated that as many as one in three Indigenous children were taken from their families between 1910 and the 1970s which affected most Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Australia, and locally, the Aboriginal children who were forcibly taken from their families and placed in the Bomaderry Children’s Home, one of the first institutions established in NSW in 1908. Stol...en Generation children and their families suffered a huge amount of grief and trauma; losing their connections to family, identity, land, language, and culture, grief that continues today. The National Apology to the Stolen Generations by the Australian Government in 2008, acknowledged the trauma and grief suffered by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as a result of past government policies, particularly the removal of children from their families. As well as commemorating the Apology today, we also want to recognise, acknowledge and support our Stolen Generations in their ongoing journey to healing. Watch or read the full speech below.
