08.01.2022 This is a snippet - see the full video here: https://youtu.be/RWsC32zms2o This video was shot at the Phillip Piperides Foundry in Brisbane. Phillip has been a mentor to Leonie for many years. In this video, she is working on the wax stage of a bronze statue. At first she makes a model using clay and wire, then a rubber mould. The wax model is cast from the rubber mould. When the wax model emerges, little details can be lost and there are other imperfections which make each c...asting unique. Leonie then refines the model using a flame for heat and applies a soft filling wax with the sculpting tools. As she works on the wax model, she adds further details that are unique to each sculpture. So even though many sculptures can be cast from the same mould, each one has individual characteristics. Leonie says that working on the wax model is her favourite part of the process, as is using this particular sculpting tool. It is made of soothing mahogany and she has used it for over 20 years. She says it does exactly what she wants it to, something akin to an extension of her hand. Many of Leonies pieces are conceived as street art and destined for outdoor display. She often casts figures of people not traditionally represented in the historical art cannon. If youre wandering through the Anne St and Wickham St area of Fortitude Valley, keep an eye out for Leonies statues. 08.01.2022 Nice to see some new work from SITG regular exhibitor Sam Hawkins...

08.01.2022 So heres the back story to Verns IPA Meet Vern, a scrap metal sculpture of a wyvern (a two-legged dragon with an arrow-tipped tail), made by local artisan Sam Hawkins and winner of the 2019 Peoples Choice award at Sculpture in the Gaol. At said event, we hosted our first Gaol After Dark evening, where we invited Sam Preston and his team from Bucket Brewery to supply their awesome craft beers.... After the event, the two Sams got talking and Vern ended up paying an extended visit to Bucket Brewerys cellar door in Kempsey. Hes still there if want to go meet him. During his visit, Vern inspired a new IPA, a no-nonsense ABV 6.8% ale that boasts big fruity aromas from the extensive use of Cascade, Galaxy and Amarillo hops. I had to try it. So when Steve Whalley from Kempsey won the Peoples Choice award in our 20:20 Online Exhibition, the opportunity presented itself. I love how arts events such as Sculpture in the Gaol can trigger other collaborations in the wider community that ultimately contribute to the local economy and well-being. Ill raise a glass to that any day!

06.01.2022 Hello there Sculpture Vultures! Today, were catching up some of the sculpture news that happened while we were busy running our 20:20 Online Exhibition. This story really made us smile Back on 31st July THE END, a sculpture by @heatherphillipson was unveiled for the #fourthplinth in Londons Trafalgar Square.... The Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Square in London has an interesting back story - originally intended to hold an equestrian statue of William IV, it remained bare due to insufficient funds and for over 150 years its fate was debated. After consulting with public art commissioners, critics and members of the public as to the future of the plinth, from around 1998 onwards, it was decided to install on the plinth a rolling programme of temporary artworks rather than settle permanently on one figure or commemorative statute. Fast forward to today and we find the plinth adorned with a large swirl of whipped cream with a cherry, a fly and a drone on top, courtesy of artist Heather Phillipson. To my mind, the piece evokes a sense of things being the verge of collapse; the whipped up cream of the economy is melting and sliding down the side of society, while drones continue to deliver more stuff and flies feast on the entrails. Ed - when I first noted this story I copied that quote from the internet but I cant for the life of me find it again, so apologies in advance if these are not Heathers actual words, but I think it neatly captures one subjects point of view. Inside the drone, theres actually a camera which surveils a section of Trafalgar Square. Copy this URL into your browser to take a look: www.theend.today . . .
