25.01.2022 Back in the day when we could have visitors, we had the entire Melbourne City Football Club mens A-league team come for dinner. Now they are in the Grand Final tomorrow against Sydney! To be honest, not many of us followed this type of football but we were so impressed by the players and with the genuine interest they showed in us and with our stories that we became fans. #melbournecityfc go into this game as underdogs and we understand what that is like to be considered the underdogs. We like their story. We are very excited and will be watching and supporting so loudly that you may hear us!!

24.01.2022 This month, while the nation stopped to watch a horse race, we stopped to dress fancy, laugh, sing karaoke, eat food and enjoy time together. Making a home takes more than a roof over your head. Strong community needs shared memories with people you love to create a sense of place and belonging. We are grateful for these moments!

22.01.2022 Cooking up a storm! Have you ever accidentally burnt a snag or two? No fear! Residents and BBQ experts Paul and Richard are here to show us how it's done. Thanks guys!

22.01.2022 Our CEO, Amanda Donohoe, reflects on how we navigated the challenges of #COVID19 this year: "The strength of our model is bound to community living but paradoxically, in a pandemic, living in a close community has the potential to become our greatest weakness. However, love and care has still been demonstrated with donations of food, funds, sanitizer, masks and cleaning products and residents know they are not forgotten. I would like to thank everyone for their support; it h...as been so essential and so encouraging... We trust that it will not be long before we can connect with the broader Servants community again and together bring hope and opportunity to the people we serve. We can count on our residents to be waiting with smiling faces." Read more in our #AnnualReport : https://www.servants.org.au//up/SCH-Annual-Report-2020.pdf

22.01.2022 If you visit on a warm day, you'll sometimes find us all-hands-on-deck in the gardens. We're grateful for our four beautiful Boroondara properties! Are you a green thumb or garden enthusiast? As COVID-19 eases and life settles in, we may want to hear from you!

22.01.2022 Throughout the #COVID19 pandemic, Steeple Church has been preparing and donating these goody bags for residents across our houses. The bags provide nutritious snacks and meals during lockdowns when leaving to visit the shops can put residents at risk. But even more, they let us know that someone cares - and that's what community is built on. Thank you Steeple Church!

22.01.2022 What to do when there is no hand sanitizer on the face of the earth? We reached out to our friends Steeple Church who connected us to HealthSmart Pharmacy Alfred who supplied us with some rare ingredients to make our own hand sanitizer. We are so thankful to them!

22.01.2022 At the close of 2020, our team gathered together for breakfast. It was a celebration of everything we've experienced and achieved together across the year. We celebrated new managers, successfully navigating COVID, exciting new projects, inspiring resident stories, and the community around us that makes everything possible. Our team is united in one thing: creating communities where dignity, respect, hope and opportunity are nurtured.

21.01.2022 The #VictorianGovernment has announced a record multi-billion dollar investment into social housing, which includes support for #communityhousing. Every day we live in the midst of Melbourne's affordable housing crisis. As said by public housing resident Tenzin Laktso; "Accommodation is the foundation of everything". We have known of the need for community housing since we began managing Carrical house in 1986. ... But our model is unique: we provide more than a building. We create strong communities where residents can flourish, with live-in house managers, meals provided, and strong partnerships with local community groups. We thank Sophie and Georgie for their kindness and generosity. Direct quote from a resident "Yum. Where did these come from?" Thanks also to Alicia Dole for providing the transport.

14.01.2022 This is our coronavirus bucket that we hope we will never have to use. We have four of these, one for each house. Susan, our wonderful volunteer, has researched and collected all the things we will need if we have to take action because we have a positive coronavirus case.

13.01.2022 Who doesn’t like a good burger on a cold wet Friday night? Stephen is certainly pretty pleased. Thanks to Tim our cook for predicting that this is exactly what we needed.

12.01.2022 Outdoor spaces to enjoy life together help build a sense of belonging and community. Our COVID-safe working bee with residents, house managers and local volunteers this morning was just the first of many moments where we'll gather together and enjoy comfy couches, laughter and good conversation. Thanks to Bendigo Bank for making this possible!

10.01.2022 It is National Volunteers Week so we want to say a massive thank you to all of the people that contribute to the 'add ons' that make Servants so special. You show your love by giving time and effort and we just want to say that we see it and love you back!

09.01.2022 "I’d gone from having everything to nothing just like that. I was shattered. Didn’t know where to go, where to turn. It was a shock to the system, being homeless, losing it all... There’s stuff here a lot of people just couldn’t afford otherwise. It’s safe. It’s clean. The people are actually very good, nice, courteous. I get along well with them. It’s different from the other places I’ve lived. There’s lots of reasons to be at Servants. Here I can recover and work on the th...ings I want to work on. It’s a good place to do that." Phil, a resident who joined our community this year, shares his story in our 2020 Annual Report. Read more: https://www.servants.org.au//u/SCH-Annual-Report-2020.pdf

07.01.2022 Boroondara Cares adds so much to the lives of our residents through group activities and personal support. We say ‘Amen’ to this person’s sentiments. We are missing the services of Boroondara Cares

07.01.2022 The guys saying thanks to #MelbourneCity FC for donating a McDonalds coffee voucher for every resident. It helps to have a reason to go for a walk and walks are good for mental health. So is knowing other people are thinking about you!

06.01.2022 Thanks John Kennedy MP for taking the time to speak with us this morning about the future of community housing! Tackling #homelessness works best in partnership with our local community, residents, government and businesses. We are more effective together. We welcome the recent Victorian Government announcement of over $5 billion in funding committed to support #socialhousing, with our region named as a key area of focus.

06.01.2022 We have had three people call to beg for help this week, all turned away by crisis services unable to cope with the large numbers of homeless people needing housing NOW. Over the last few months our lives have been turned upside down, now is the time to turn homelessness upside down. The construction of more social housing would be a long lasting beneficial outcome of this dreadful period.

05.01.2022 The stories of four of our residents have been shared by Boroondara Council for Homelessness Week. Read on for more.

05.01.2022 Stephen Baxter, our Board Chair, reflects on what has been - and what might be, in our 2020 #AnnualReport. "As we look back at the past year there are so many things to give thanks for despite so much that was unforeseen. Looking forward, the future seems just as unclear. The economic and social impact of the pandemic and the government lockdowns are yet to be fully felt. Whatever emerges, the board believes we are well placed to meet that future and that perhaps the Servan...ts model is made for a time such as this. Maybe, some of our most significant work might still lay in front of us. Read more at: https://www.servants.org.au//up/SCH-Annual-Report-2020.pdf

03.01.2022 45 minutes of podcast listening that you will not regret. Love thy Strangerfeatures our very own Kitchen Manager, Tim Cox, talking about his inspiring journey from accountant to chef and his work at Servants. Sometimes it is not all about the money.

02.01.2022 House Managers Hannah & Matt reflect on living at Carrical House with their two children in 2020: "The decision to move into Carrical at the end of last year came upon us quite suddenly. Once the idea was there I couldn’t shake it (and I tried!). I was anxious about what it would be like to raise our kids in such an unconventional environment. But the past nine months (at Carrical) have been some of the richest of our lives. ... There are plenty of challenges. Challenges that have resulted in sleepless nights and left me in tears. The mental illness, trauma and addictions that have affected every person in our household are heartbreaking. This makes the moments of laughter and friendship, kindness and patience - especially those between the residents and our kids - some of the most beautiful things I have ever witnessed".

02.01.2022 Haircuts are something we often take for granted. How easy is it to visit the barber and spend upwards of $30 for a haircut? Thanks to Paul, many of our residents at Romana don't have to worry. Here he is giving Dave a trim! This means more than you know. A fresh cut can make all the difference - whether you're at a job interview, being served at the supermarket, or simply passing someone in the street. ... Thanks Paul!

02.01.2022 Our #AnnualReport is now live! Amanda Donohoe, our CEO, speaks to the need for safe, affordable housing in the aftermath of 2020: "The effect of unemployment, bankruptcy, financial losses, marriage breakdowns, drug and alcohol use and mental health issues will create a massive need for the model of housing and care that Servants provides. Our experience says these people will need more than a roof. Our purpose is to create communities where respect, dignity, hope and opportu...nity are nurtured and we are preparing to meet this need over the next few years."
