24.01.2022 National Gathering Brisbane 18, 19, 20 October Friday 18 October A night of singing in St Johns Cathedral, 573 Anne Street, Brisbane... 350 members of Sing Australia gathered in the Cathedral at 6.30pm. They came from 62 different communities from all around Australia with the exception of the Northern Territory. They arrived in high spirits with such excitement and anticipation of a truly great night. They greeted each other with such warmth and happiness, renewing contacts and being introduced to others. We set the room into 4 vocal parts. We placed all the blokes, around 60, at the front. Wonderful piano accompanist, Emma Knights, from Adelaide, was seated at the Grand Piano. Celebrated organist, Andrej Kouznetsov, Assistant Director of Music at St Johns Cathedral was seated in the organ loft. Everyone was seated quickly and because most arrived early we were all ready to start 20 minutes before the due starting time. I used that opportunity to inform everyone about the credentials of Emma and Andrej. I also embarked on a different kind of acknowledgment of country by describing firstly how the local Aboriginal Turrbal tribe once lived in this area and how they related to each other and how this now relates to some of our roads and places. I then acknowledged the traditional custodians of this land. To be honest I felt very moved in doing this. We then started on time by singing a few familiar songs to relax and warm into the night. The big sound of the all the voices energised everyone and the more they sang the better it all sounded. Then I called upon Andrej to perform ‘Fantasia in G, BWV 572 by Johann Sebastian Bach. It was unbelievable a powerful piece utilising the full strength of the Cathedral’s four manual pipe organ, which is the largest cathedral organ in Australia. It hosts many recitalists from across the world: Pearson's design (and stone-vaulting) creates a five-second reverberation making organ-music particularly resonant. This was a particularly big piece and it gave Andrej the opportunity to show us his brilliance. We then decided to do something a bit different we spent a good bit of time working on the parts of Ave Verum. I taught each part line by line. When it was pretty well ready I invited Andrej to accompany us on the organ. It was glorious. I then worked on 3 more songs like this. The Cathedral was resonating with the sounds of all the voices in full flight. It was a sound that will stay with people for a long-time Hair-raising, spine tingling, heartfelt, lifted the roof off were some of the responses. We finished the singing with a few more of our favourite songs before embarking on our most difficult part of the night ‘feeding the 5,000’ only differences there was only 350 (felt like 5,000) and an absence of a miracle although we sort of had one everyone in the end had something to eat and drink. Everyone was very patient and best of all they were on a high. What a night. We were thrilled. The feedback has been thrilling.
