24.01.2022 Here's to not being afraid to read last night's text #sober #sobercurious #sobermates #soberaf

24.01.2022 Going through your sober journey, we think it is important to surround yourself with a sober community . But that doesn’t mean your drinking friends can’t also be your biggest supporters too! . They are usually the ones that have seen what drinking has done to you & understand the reasons for you deciding alcohol isn’t right for you... . We believe that if your friends are accepting your choices that doesn’t mean your friendship group has to change . Put your sober boundaries in place & then continue on as the social bunny you are . Boundaries may include: Not going to all the events that are centred around drinking Telling your friends you may ghost them at a party when people are drunk (eg. They will not even realise you’ve left) Organising more activities where alcohol isn’t the centre focus (not really a boundary but a focus for your social hangs) . Sam I’ve been blessed with such incredible supporters. I went to a friend’s house for a BBQ and in their line-up of drinks on offer there was a bottle of AF wine. They have no idea how much this small gesture meant to me; to know I’m included and seen . Tag your supporters below and tell them how thankful you are See more

22.01.2022 Now we think there is so damn much you gain when you give up the booze. but there are also some things you lose . Sam I have lost the ability to enjoy Cards Against Humanity . I was at my good friends place (I will point out these friends have been my biggest sober supporters and I adore them) and we had a lovely dinner, we sat around the fire, they were drinking & I had a glass of AF wine. Yet the kept wanting to go inside a play Cards Against Humanity... . Now they were a little tipsy & yes alcohol was having an effect of them & they were ‘lol’ing throughout the game . But when you are sober and not on their level Cards Against Humanity is not funny (well not for me). I was trying my hardest to be polite & laugh along but I just wasn’t feeling the game. Luckily being sober, I was counting along & found a quick way to end the game . I now know that I don’t want or need to play Cards Against Humanity again . I recently brought this up to them & they laughed. They said they were stressed out thinking we need to do activities rather than just sitting around drinking & talking. Yet our favourite part of the night was the sitting around talking . Sober supporters, we love you but you don’t need to keep us entertained, we just enjoy your company as it is (although I don’t mind a game of scrabble) . What are some things you’ve given up on / lost since becoming sober? . #sober #sobercurious #soberaussie #sobertips #sobermates See more

20.01.2022 We have loved seeing all the beautiful R U OK? Day posts today . R U OK? Is here to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with the people around them & start a conversation with anyone who may be struggling atm . You don't need to be an expert to reach out - just a good friend & a great listener... . Use these four R U OK steps to have a conversation that could change a life: 1. Ask R U OK? 2. Listen 3. Encourage action 4. Check in . Check in with your sober friends / sober curious friends / drinking friends . Also, check in with yourself & whom you’re reaching out to Sam - I am one to call my Dad as soon as I have an issue. I’ve learnt ask if he is in the headspace to take my issues on. Sometimes he says he can’t take it on right now and that is okay. It is important to learn if you’re in the right headspace to take other people’s struggles . We love our community so much - let's continue to look after and support each other . It's OK to not be OK. If you need extra support, we encourage you to connect with a health professional . #sobermates #sober #soberaussies #soberglow #alcoholfree #sobercurious #ruok See more

To do whatever you please In time, your body gets use to feeling healthier: a full night’s sleep, more energy & less toxins in the body We have found it starts asking for more, for you to move your body! You will have no choice but to get fit Your body is begging you to do something with it Move me! What exercise / sport / training have you started since you’ve gone sober? Sam Ocean swimming and consistently walking #sober #sobercurious #soberaussie #sobertips #sobermates #soberhobbies

17.01.2022 Turns out the dating game is hard but maybe it is not as scary as it sounds! (Yes even if you’re sober) . Not sure if you should be taking dating advice from someone who is single but hey at least she is in the game . Sam After being single for a little while now I thought I’d put myself back out ‘there’... . There = dating apps . Turns out I have never dated sober (don’t think high school sweethearts count for me) . I’ve been put off getting on the apps, wondering whether or not I should be upfront with saying but I’m sober, in fear of being judged. That was me a couple of months ago. Now I firmly believe that Sam = Sober Sam does go on my profile. Being sober isn’t everything I represent but it is a part of who I am. If someone is going to judge me for that then they are not my person . Turns out it has been nothing but positive responses when being asked why I don’t drink / telling people I don’t drink on the app . Either they ask a couple of questions out of interest or apologise for asking me out for drink (lol no need to apologise, I still go to bars) . Anyways, what we’re trying to say is if you’ve been worried about dating sober for how you’ll be seen, don’t be! Be true to yourself & if they are not accepting of your choice then they were never going to be your person anyway . What’s your experience with sober online dating been? . PS we’re going to go more in depth regarding setting boundaries, how to talk about being sober to a new potential partner & sober dating in the coming weeks (just got to get a bit more experience first ) . #sober #sobercurious #soberaussie #sobertips #sobermates #soberdating See more

13.01.2022 We’ve heard comments like the party doesn’t start till the drinks start flowing. Well obviously, we disagree. The party starts when the interaction starts. Alcohol just pushes us to that goal quicker (we don’t need alcohol to do this for us) Think of a kid’s play date. Especially one that is set up by the parents. Watch the kids, they are awkward at first, they don’t really know how to interact with each other. Yet 20 minutes later, the kids are playing together... Now how does this happen how to we get the part of the party where it is easy & not awkward We need to forget the social expectation that everyone is ready to party at the same time and just go with the flow rather than rushing everyone to get on some made up level It is okay to be awkward & quiet at the start of the party, it may take a bit for you to feel comfortable. It is a part of our human response to new situations to take a bit of a flight or fight response when we feel vulnerable. It may take 20 minutes for you to feel at ease with your mates. We shouldn’t be using alcohol as a quick fix to relax as you don’t want to become reliant on it For the shy group, we can attest that the more times you go out sober the easier it gets It is best not to use alcohol as Dutch courage & just show up as you are & watch people connect with your true self PS: You may even be the party starter, the bubbly personality that brings people together & makes people feel comfortable. If this is you, use your personality & confidence to bring in the group. Your people will mimic the energy you present How do you get the party started? #sobermates #sober #soberaussies #soberglow #alcoholfree #sobercurious

08.01.2022 Alcohol by Volume (ABV) in short, is the measure of alcohol content within a drink . In Australia: Beer contains 0.9% to 6% alcohol Wine contains 12% to 14%... Fortified wines such as sherry and port contain 18% to 20% Spirits such as scotch, rum, vodka and bourbon contain 40% to 50% ABV is used to calculate the standards drinks in a beverage. Here is some maths for you, the formula for calculating standard drinks is: Volume of Container in Litres multiplied by the percentage of alcohol volume multiplied by 0.789, equals the number of standard drinks. (0.789 is the specific gravity of ethyl alcohol.) For example, one stubbie of 375ml of full strength beer 5% alcohol by volume: 0.375 multiplied by 5 multiplied by 0.789 equals 1.5 standard drinks 0.375 X 5 X 0.789 = 1.5 standard drinks . 71% of our followers didn’t know this . Just to throw in another curve ball - Have you heard of 0.5% ABV drinks?! No? Yes? You may have seen drinks with 0.5% ABV or some saying alcohol free (AF). If it says 0.5% does this mean it is alcohol free? Should I be drinking this if I identify as sober? . We would class 0.5% ABV as alcohol free drinks as there’s a similar amount of alcohol in many natural foods that aren’t labelled as containing alcohol. Eg. 0.4% alcohol in ripe bananas. Your body breaks the small amount of alcohol down faster than you can actually consume it A reason you shouldn’t drink 0.5% ABV drinks is if you feel it could trigger you & cause you to relapse . In Australia, the requirements for standard drink labelling apply to beverages or food capable of being consumed as a beverage, where the alcohol by volume is more than 0.5% . The AF industry in Australia in growing & our questionnaire found that we don’t know many alcohol free alternatives! Sober Mates is going to change that. Soon we will be introducing some Australian AF and alternatives drinks that you can incorporate into your social lives, push your local bar to serve & bring to your mates BBQ . What AF Brands do you want to see on Sober Mates, tag them below! Or AF brands say hi in the comments . #sober #ABV #sobercurious #sobermates See more

06.01.2022 We love showing off all the Aussie brands that are normalising mindful drinking. This month we have our first AF beer beverage partner, Heaps Normal! Their story is based on the simple belief that there's things in life that are too good to be wasted . Heaps Normal was co-founded by four mates, each with their own reasons for wanting to reduce their alcohol consumption . These guys are normalising mindful drinking by brewing beer that tastes so good, you won't miss the alcoh...ol. 05.01.2022 Drinking puts a mask over your true personality, it holds you back from achieving more & it creates a fog over your day . Taking the time to get to know yourself in a sober state is important as it offers us a route to greater happiness & fulfilment . Sobriety bonuses of getting to know yourself:... Learning your natural highs (see an earlier post on this) Learning to enjoy your own company Having the headspace to work on yourself Learning new hobbies Learning to sit in your feelings and how to deal with them Having consistency to do the things you love . Sam I’ve been consistently swimming 3 times a week for the past 3 months & have now started training for the 1.2km ocean Pier to Pub swim. I know I would have never have the routine or courage to do this if I was still drinking. I absolutely love the water & I’m loving learning how to add more water time to my life . What have you learnt about yourself since becoming sober? . #sober #sobercurious #soberaussie #sobertips #sobermates #selfknowledge See more

04.01.2022 Drinking steals from your next day . It gives you: Dehydration Anxiety... Flashbacks from poor decisions Eating the unhealthy choices A wasted post day . Sobriety gives you: A full day to do whatever you want A clear head No brain fog Remembering a great night A healthier bank account . #sober #sobercurious #soberaussie #sobertips See more

04.01.2022 Sam So much, I would tell myself that life is only going to get better from here . That your social life isn’t going to disappear when you get sober (in fact is gets better) . That being sober, is just one part of your incredible life... . That you have no idea how much happier you’re about to feel . What would you tell yourself at the start of your sober / sober curious journey?! . #sober #sobercurious #soberaussie #sobertips #sobermates See more

04.01.2022 I deserve it I have just finished the working week I had a hard day The kids were too much today I’ve worked hard for this... . Rewarding yourself with alcohol can become a dangerous cycle . The sad truth is that they are no safe levels for drinking alcohol and it is linked to many health issues . Being more mindful around drinking choices helps us to make better decision with alcohol . How are you finding some ‘me time’ today without alcohol? . #sobermates #sober #soberaussies #soberglow #alcoholfree #sobercurious #metime See more

01.01.2022 Sam I quit alcohol because of its negative effects on my mental health. I didn’t realise how much of an effect it was having on my health and weight too! . If you’re trying to get healthier, alcohol hinders on that process . Any personal trainer will tell you that you can’t out-train a bad diet, & regular drinking or sporadic binge drinking sesh will not help... . How your body reacts to alcohol . When you drink alcohol, your body absorbs & metabolises it quicker than anything else you may have in your body at the time. A small amount will be converted into fat, while the rest will be converted into acetate by the liver. Acetate is released into the bloodstream and becomes your body’s primary source of energy . This processes takes precedence over everything else, so while your body should be absorbing nutrients and burning fat, it’s actually trying to get the alcohol out of your body as quickly as possible . While your body is using the acetate in your blood for energy, it isn’t using the fat you already have. Any of the acetate that isn’t used will be stored as fat. So unless your drinking beers while running on a treadmill, you’re virtually guaranteed to increase your body fat with every drink . Not only are you gaining calories from drinking but you’re more likely to make unhealthy food choices when drinking & your body isn’t even going to start processing that bowl of loaded fries until it has processed the alcohol! . A good option is to switch to an AF alternative. AF wine has around 22 calories per a glass with no hangover attached! . What are your healthy AF alternatives to drinking? . #sober #sobercurious #soberaussie #sobertips #sobermates See more
