22.01.2022 Period Pain: What you can do at home In many traditional societies, menstruation was a time for rest and reflection, time spent in the company of other woman in... which to let go of the old and spark the flame of new life and ideas. A woman's cycle was considered sacred and special, and her time away from daily life during menstruation was respected. These days, leading a hectic life, getting your period often seems more of an inconvenience than a cause for celebration. Mostly it isn't possible to take time out, but period pain can make getting through the day more difficult, or for some even impossible. It may be 'normal' to experience discomfort and inconvenience with your cycle, but a healthy cycle should be pain free. A Chinese medicine perspective There is an old Chinese medicine saying where there is free flow there is no pain, where there is pain, there is no free flow. Period pain occurs when the blood flow in the womb is obstructed and the lining of the uterus cannot break down and exit the womb freely. We call this blood stagnation in Chinese medicine. Blood stagnation can be caused by cold, heat or blood deficiency. Cold reduces circulation through micro-vessels and causes blood to contract or coagulate. Heat causes blood to move violently and dries the blood out. In blood deficiency patterns the blood is nutritionally poor and uterine muscles become undernourished. During menstruation the blood layer, the system most closely tied to the womb, is open to the external world as the uterine lining breaks down and discharges. At this point the body is especially sensitive to environmental influences. For example, its easy to catch a cold out in a strong wind, to get cramps sitting on a cold surface or to sleep restlessly after a few drinks. Its the most vulnerable time of the cycle and a time to take special care of yourself. Menstruation and emotion The blood layer is associated with deep, complex emotion, and is where we store deep hurt, difficult memories and trauma. For those with ongoing menstrual pain, bleeding can feel like being caught in an unending, high-intensity emotional loop. Healthy menstruation presents a fantastic opportunity for allowing the physical manifestation of difficult emotions to be flushed away. Practising some self-care to promote a healthy, pain-free cycle can be very helpful. Some suggestions for promoting a healthy flow These suggestions are designed to promote a smooth and efficient menstrual flow, support the blood and reduce the impact of environmental influences the body. During menstruation: Rest a little more than usual, especially if youre tired Ensure your lower back, belly and feet are well covered and warm enough Many women feel better with a hot water bottle or wheat bag on the belly or lower back Use pads rather than tampons. This allows the womb lining to leave your body as quickly as possible. Tampon use can cause a build-up of stagnation in the womb over time. Favour gentler forms of exercise like walking, or yoga practices that have been modified for menstruation Avoid sex Avoid heavy lifting Avoid going swimming or going out with wet hair Avoid excessive sweating if possible. Hot baths, saunas, hot yoga and strenuous exercise are best avoided Dietary suggestions for menstruation Generally, well cooked, warm, easily digestible food is best at this time Eat blood-nourishing foods such as leafy greens, especially spinach and nettles, seaweed, carrots, leeks, sesame seeds, dates, eggs with runny yolks, butter, ghee, broths, red meat, livers, chicken, bone marrow and oysters. Some blood nourishing foods are very rich and should be eaten in moderation. Avoid eating food that doesnt agree with you. Gastric distress such as bloating, and constipation can increase pain in the womb Avoid heating substances during your period such as alcohol, coffee, tobacco, cannabis or large amounts of very hot spices such as chilli and garlic Avoid food that is cold in temperature such as ice cream, iced drinks and food straight from the fridge Peroneal Steaming Steaming is practiced by many traditional cultures around the world and is fantastic for regulating the menstrual cycle. It involves sitting or squatting over a bowl of steaming herbs. Its a wonderfully relaxing self-care ritual and can easily be set up at home with a little ingenuity and some herbs from the garden and pantry. Stay tuned for more information about steaming at home. Wearing a pelvic wrap A faha is a Mayan pelvic wrap made from a length of cloth (see photo). It is used in traditional Mayan medicine to stabilize the pelvis, engage the core muscles, support the lower back and optimize womb positioning. It is a wonderful daily support for day-to-day activity and is particularly helpful after childbirth, especially if there is pelvic instability, abdominal muscle separation or back pain. We have a range of beautiful handmade faha wraps available at the clinic. Severe Period pain If you experience severe period pain and havent yet found a solution, take heart. Many women do manage to overcome severe period pain. Often it just comes down to finding help thats appropriate for you and your body. If you have ongoing concerns about your cycle we suggest seeking help from a trusted health practitioner. Article by Rose Rowney

18.01.2022 Thank you to YIS - Yoga In Salento for making this video of me answering a question about stretching as part of an interview in Italy earlier this year. * I s...trongly believe that being flexible can be very healthy and important. * However, feeling a stretching feeling in your body with the aim to become flexible may not the be most effective way of getting flexible and it may have other non-desirable effects. * One non-desirable effect includes stimulation of the of the 'stretch reflex' in most stretching exercises, which is part of your 'flight or fight response'. * The 'flight or fight response' (over-stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system) causes your body to: - inhibit your immune system, thus reducing you ability to healing from sickness and recover from injury; - inhibit the the digestive system, and thus reduce your ability to absorb nutrients and eliminate toxins; and - inhibits the reproductive system, including not only your appropriate hormonal and sexual function, but also your ability to regenerate new cells. * If stretching is overdone then other non-desirable effects include inhibition of blood flow, and possible risk of musculoskeletal damage. 17.01.2022 A penumbral eclipse of the full moon is on its way, arriving June 5/6: https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/lunar/2020-june-5 Any eclipse is a good time to do sa...dhana (Vimalananda always said one mantra repeated during an eclipse was the equivalent of one thousand repeated at some other time), and not necessarily a good time for anything in the mundane world. This one in particular may be challenging as during it the moon will be debilitated occupying Scorpio). A debilitated moon may intensify emotions that are already somehow hindered, as they are currently in many locations, so it will behoove all of us if at all possible to do some serious sadhana during this event. The strength of the effect will be attenuated to some degree by the fact that it will be a penumbral eclipse and therefore difficult to see: https://www.timeanddate.com/ec/penumbral-lunar-eclipse.html On the other hand, an eclipse never comes alone, meaning that a solar eclipse always occurs about two weeks before or after a lunar eclipse. Usually there is a set of two eclipses in a row, but at other times there are three. We are now in one of those times, as the second eclipse in this season will transpire on June 21 (an annular solar eclipse) and the third on July 5 (another penumbral lunar eclipse). The period between two eclipses possesses some of the qualities of the eclipses themselves, which tend to cast the mind into shadow, and the presence of a third eclipse a fortnight later will tend to prolong the chaotic energy, particular during these days of an ongoing Kala Sarpa Yoga, which since the nodes are in charge of the causation of eclipses magnifies the effect even more. Please therefore remain calm, encourage everyone around you to remain calm, visualize calm, pray for calm, and during this period salute those ethereal beings, like Shiva, who specialize in promoting calm. Om namah sivaya!

10.01.2022 Couple thoughts: Often Ayurveda employs #opposite forces as #medicine. While no doubt there is significant suffering throughout the world right now, whether be...cause of contracting #Covid-19 or because of lost income through self-isolating efforts to avoid contracting it (#flatteningthecurve), it seems to me it was inevitable that eventually our unchecked momentum towards #pravtti (focus on onward, upward, outward expansion) was bound to be forced to experience the opposite--in this case #nivtti (ceasing, suspension). We may be witnessing such a phenomenon in action and, while it may cause much individual suffering, it may be a massive pendulum effect toward #balance on a global scale. While it may seem #hopeless to be able to avoid the personally challenging effects of the modern day imbalances, there is always #hope. Even during an #epidemic, we read in one of the ancient #Ayurveda texts, there are ways to support #health and #sanity (in addition to the ones we're hearing about everywhere else these days): "#Truthfulness, #compassion for #living beings, #charity, #sacrifices, #prayer to the gods, adoption of #preventative measures, #tranquility, protection of the self by mantra, etc., search for things that are good for the self, residence in auspicious places, observance of brahmacary, service to those observing brahmacary, discussion of religious scriptures, great sages and those who have self-control, and constant association with #religious, sttvika and learned personsthese are the therapies which if adopted during the epidemics can easily #savethelives of individuals provided the #death of a particular individual during the period is not predestined." #Caraka Sahit:Vimnasthna:III:12-18 (BTW, association with good company does not have to be in-person). More thoughts about how we become vulnerable to and weather epidemics here:

08.01.2022 Our society places a great emphasis on being thin and this has a strong effect on women, who often diet excessively to try to obtain that cultural ideal of thin...ness. If she finds her period is getting lighter or that she is missing one occasionally, it is a sign that she may not be getting the good-quality yin that her body needs to create a healthy period. Also, if a woman’s exercise routine causes her to sweat a lot, this is another indication that she is spending yin that is vitally important to replace. Dr. Welch explores this further in her new Women's Health & Hormones course: https://buff.ly/3003JR4 as well as in her book Balance Your Hormones, Balance Your Life: https://buff.ly/2UxUQQf See more
