20.01.2022 Police are urging the public to make safety the priority when in, on or around water this summer. South Coast Police District Commander, Superintendent Greg Moore said police do not want to see any more tragedies in or on our waterways throughout the holiday season and over the summer months. The key to being safe on the water is assessing the environment you are in and taking simple precautions to ensure the safety of yourself and others, Supt Moore said.... Unfortunately, we find that many drownings and near-drownings could have been prevented by heeding safety messages. There is a reason our beaches are patrolled, so make sure you swim between the red and yellow flags. The same goes for our rivers, lakes and dams always swim with someone else, look out for one another and never swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs. We want everyone be safe and have fun this summer, so whether you’re at the beach, a river, lake or swimming pool, it is important to know the conditions and possible hazards that you may encounter. Supt Moore said it is also important to follow directions given by authorities whether it be police, lifesavers or maritime, and know your own capabilities. If you’ve been drinking, do not swim alcohol and water do not mix, Supt Moore said. We are urging swimmers to behave responsibly and remember that a situation in or on the water can change quickly and without warning. With extra boats expected across inland waterways over the coming months, police will be out in force to ensure the safety of all those that choose to enjoy activities on the water. Skippers are also reminded of their responsibilities whether you are in, on or around water, safety should be top of mind, Supt Moore said. As the skipper of a vessel, you are responsible for ensuring it is safe to go out and have all the required safety equipment on board. Police, Maritime and Fisheries officers will be out on the water conducting safety checks and will issue fines for non-compliance. Remember, the alcohol limit is 0.05 just like on land and with officers conducting random breath tests on the water, it’s safer not to drink at all, Supt Moore said. Tips for keeping safe in or on NSW waterways: At the beach, always swim between the red and yellow flags Read and observe the safety signs Ask a lifesaver/lifeguard for safety advice Always swim with someone else and look out for each other Always supervise children around the water Never swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs Learn how to identify a rip If you need help, stay calm and attract attention Always wear a lifejacket while boating or rock-fishing If witnessing an in-water emergency, call Triple Zero (000) for police. More information about water safety in NSW is available at www.watersafety.nsw.gov.au

05.01.2022 Drug-affected drivers were the focus of a three-day long police operation on the far South Coast last week. Operation Guardian was conducted by officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command and South Coast Police District between Wednesday 25 November and Friday 27 November 2020. The operation targeted drivers in the Batemans Bay, Merimbula, Narooma and Eden areas.... Over three days, 119 random drug tests and 122 random breath tests were conducted, with 20 drug-affected drivers arrested as a result. Twelve traffic infringement notices were issued, four people were fined for speeding, six future court attendance notices were issued, and eight vehicles were searched. South Coast Police District Commander, Superintendent Greg Moore APM, said the number of drug-affected drivers is a real cause for concern. To have twenty people test positive to drug driving is absolutely disgraceful, Supt Moore said. That’s twenty people who have made an active decision to take prohibited drugs and get behind the wheel. We are very fortunate that there were no fatalities or serious injuries as a result of this kind of behaviour.

04.01.2022 Police again urge car owners to take precautions to ensure the safety of their cars and their personal property. This past weekend Police have received Steal from Motor Vehicle reports between Nowra to Bermagui. Many of these offences could have been avoided by removing wallets and handbags from the vehicles and locking them. Whilst Police encourage victims to report crime so that trends can be identified we also encourage people to take every opportunity to avoid becoming... a victim. These types of stealing’s are usually a crime of opportunity. Unlocked vehicles in car parks of shopping centres or unlocked vehicles parked in driveways or on the street can be a target with the odds of an unauthorised entry increasing if there are valuables in sight. Unlocked vehicles offer no security at all. Criminals are more likely to commit a crime if they can do it quickly with a low chance of being detected and a high chance of success. Simply put, if there is no property left there is no benefit. Police repeatedly request that all members of the public leaving their vehicle unattended at any time remove any items of value and lock your car. When leaving your car for short periods of time do not leave any items of value in view, take your property such as bags, wallets and phones with you.
