22.01.2022 As members will have seen today, SPI have sent out an email announcing that due to the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 and the uncertainty surrounding the show, Speckle Park have regretfully withdrawn as the feature breed for 2021 at Royal Sydney Show. We are deeply disappointed, as we know many exhibitors are, but have made this difficult decision with the interests of the breed and its resources in mind. We encourage those who would like to discuss this decision to get in con...tact with CEO Hannah Bourke ([email protected]) or SPI RAS liasion Greg Ebbeck. We’d like to acknowledge all the hard work which has been put into preparing for the 2021 Feature Breed by both individual exhibitors and the subcommittee, and express how proud we are of our Speckle Park show teams. We thank members for their understanding, and are working hard to set an upcoming feature date. We look forward to making announcements when we can about future opportunities for showcasing the Speckle Park cattle we know and love.

13.01.2022 What is a TSU, and how do I take one? TSU stands for tissue sample unit. In order to register a purebred calf with Speckle Park International, a genetic sample from the calf needs to be analysed by the Laboratory at Neogen Australasia to determine it is eligible before being listed on the SPI Register. (For more information on what is eligible to be registered, see our Rules and Regulations at http://specklepark.org/pdfupload/136.pdf) The genetic sample can still be taken i...n the form of tail hair, but Neogen prefer wet TSU samples and they will charge slightly more for hair samples and semen straws. The newer and preferred sample is a TSU, which holds a small plug of tissue taken from the ear with a TSU Applicator. Taking a TSU is straightforward process, and the team at Neogen are seeing an increased uptake in the technology among breeders for the following reasons: - reduced risk of sample contamination - consistent sample size - ease and speed of taking them in the yards - ability to more quickly process them in the labs See the link below for a handy set of guidelines from Allflex Australia for taking and storing TSUs. http://specklepark.org/uploads/68.pdf

12.01.2022 Some good advice from Neogen Australasia about the best ways to safely send your samples now the Australian SPI members will need to start mailing their samples directly to the lab

09.01.2022 Spring calving is well underway, and for stud breeders, that means keeping a watchful eye on calving females and recording birth weights. According to BreedPlan, while the degree of calving difficulty in a herd is composed of a combination of both environmental and genetic factors, including calf shape, pelvic size and calving will, the most influential factor by far is calf weight. By recording an accurate weight as close to birth as possible (up to 24 hours post-birth is ...acceptable) we are working towards improving our decision-making abilities when choosing genetics down the line. The link below will take you to a BreedPlan tip sheet on recording birth weights - have a look here: http://specklepark.org/uploads/75.pdf
