13.01.2022 This is the last weekend to watch our South Africa film selection! Back of the Moon is a perfect Saturday night movie. A gritty period gangster tale and moving love story that takes place over a single night in 1958 in Sophiatown the night before the entire community was forcibly removed by the apartheid regime to create the white only JHB suburb of Triomph (Triumph). At the time Sophiatown was a melting pot of good and bad, with gangsters, intellectuals, musicians, jou...rnalists and anti-apartheid activists rubbing shoulders in shebeens or illegal drinking houses like Back of the Moon. The film explores this eclectic dynamic through the fictionalised relationship between Badman, a well read gang leader, and Eve, a singer reminiscent of Miriam Makeba, as Badmans gang attempt to kill him and take over the gang. Directed by Oscar Nominated film maker Angus Gibson, once criticised for his earlier documentary on Sophiatown, where he was accused of romanticising the situation and glossing over the violent truth of the gangster culture there, Back of the Moon is an accomplished return to this seminal time and place, to answer his critics.
