25.01.2022 We’d like to extend a sincere thank you to the Anglican Community Fund for a very generous donation towards our Women’s Service. This vital service, the only type of its kind in WA, provides transitional accommodation for more than 50 women each year who have experienced homelessness and is funded by the generosity of St Bart’s supporters. Ian Leverington, Executive Officer of the Anglican Community Fund, stopped by to present the cheque to our CEO Samantha Drury.

24.01.2022 Someone, somewhere needs to see this. Message your mate, no words needed... pass it on.

24.01.2022 Enjoying the fruits of their labour! A group of residents from our James Watson Aged Care Centre enjoyed a delicious meal of honey soy chicken for lunch today. Each week, the group participate in a two hour cooking class in our own Cafe Lime, where they pick the menu, prepare the food and clean up afterwards. The men think the cooking class is great and love the company and food along with a bit of variety in their diet. ... Helping them out was student volunteer Minette who said she loves talking to them and learning about their lives. Theyre very interesting and great fun, she said.

24.01.2022 CHRISTMAS IN JULY What else are you going to do with leftover Christmas pudding (thats still very much in date!)? Our Arnott Community Recovery Village Support Workers organised a Christmas in July lunch, and it was smiles all round! Weve had a few new people move into the Recovery Village in the last few months, and it was great to see them attending, having fun and socialising with everyone there, said Luke, a Recovery Support Worker.

23.01.2022 How cosy do these rugs look! We were so grateful to recently receive a donation of hand-knitted and crocheted rugs (blessed by Father Freeland at St Marys in South Perth). Provided by a wonderful group of women who get together regularly to knit, these rugs make such a difference on these cold winter nights to the residents here at St Barts. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!

23.01.2022 Theres no doubt that 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone, which is why the message behind R U OK? Day is more important than ever. If you feel like somethings not quite the same with someone you know, trust that gut instinct and take the time to ask them Are you OK? If someone says theyre not OK, make time to listen, encourage action and check in. That conversation could change, or even save, their life. The message for R U OK? Day 2020 is: Theres more to sa...y after R U OK? Sometimes its hard to know what to say when someone says theyre not ok, but it is important to keep the conversation going. Here is a really helpful conversation guide to get you started - https://bit.ly/2FeCXAd For more information and resources, head over to R U OK Day

22.01.2022 There are so many amazing people who take the time to brighten the world of others. And Hale has a lot of them. Thank you.

22.01.2022 A big shout out to our Senior Support worker Arjun Acharya who recently graduated and received his registration as an Enrolled Nurse. Versatile Arjun has been with St Barts for the past eight including as an Occupational Health and Safety Officer, Information System and Project Development Officer and now , Senior Support Worker in our James Watson Aged Care Centre. He said hes grateful for the support St Barts had given him while he was studying to become an Enrolled Nu...rse. St Barts has been incredibly supportive of me, they even helped me to stay in Australia permanently after I left Nepal. Im really grateful to everyone, especially our Chief Operating Officer Lena Hopkinson who really encouraged me to take the next step in my career progression." Arjun now has his sights set on becoming a registered nurse, and has enrolled in a nursing course at Edith Cowan University, starting in February. He hopes to continue working in the aged care sector.

21.01.2022 What a feast! Residents and clients from our Men's transitional service, Independent Living Program, Community Housing and Reconnecting Lives Program were treated to spectacular festive lunches over the last couple of weeks. A huge thanks goes to the generous people at Mineral Resources, which funded these festivities.

21.01.2022 Were not going to liewere super proud to let our supporters know that our CEO, Samantha Drury, was recently appointed as Chairperson of the Western Australian Council on Homelessness. The Council provides an important external advisory role to Simone McGurk MLA, bringing forward information on current and emerging issues affecting homelessness in WA and solutions to address these. Im looking forward to the challenge of being able to help influence and understand first-hand the governments commitment to the sector, which will also enable a great level of forward planning for St Barts to support the action plan of the government around the ending homelessness agenda, Sam said.

20.01.2022 We were pleased to collaborate with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA this morning as part of a training exercise to test our evacuation processes and help firefighters hone their skills. The hour and a half drill was carried out by 35 firefighters with seven trucks from the Vincent, Perth, Osborne Park and Belmont stations. Staff and residents watched as firefighters undertook three different simultaneous training scenarios including a rescue from heights using ropes and ladders, a simulated fire in the laundry of the transitional accommodation for men and an assessment of our evacuation processes. Overall it was a very successful exercise!

20.01.2022 Our wonderful volunteers do an amazing job. Here they are having some fun at today's Mental Health Week event.

20.01.2022 ABORIGINAL DOT PAINTING | In the early 1970s Geoffrey Bardon was assigned as an art teacher for the children of the Aboriginal people in Papunya, near Alice Springs. He noticed whilst the Aboriginal men were telling stories they would draw symbols in the sand. Bardon encouraged his students to paint a mural based on traditional dreamings on the school walls. He incited them to paint the stories onto canvas and board. Soon many of the men began painting as well. The Aborig...inal artists soon became concerned that the sacred-secret objects they painted were being seen not only by Westerners, but Aboriginal people from different regions that were not privy to their tribal stories. They did not want them to understand or learn the sacred, restricted parts of their stories so the artists decided to eliminate the sacred elements and abstracted the designs into dots to conceal their sacred meanings. (Ref: https://www.aboriginal-art-australia.com//aboriginal-dot-/) Earlier this week, some of our residents and staff enjoyed a morning of creation where they could freely explore their own interpretation of dot painting, in celebration of NAIDOC Week. #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek or #NAIDOC

20.01.2022 A special prayer was said for the homeless at a beautiful service at St Georges Cathedral tonight to mark the Feast of St Bartholomew Apostle and Martyr. St Barts very own Chaplain Ross Jones, with his volunteer chaplains pictured below, acknowledged the staff and supporters of St Barts for walking alongside those they support and giving them hope.St Georges Cathedral

19.01.2022 Honouring Homelessness Week 2020 this morning with this fine group of St Barts consumers, volunteers, staff and BHP Western Australia employees. Joined by Graham Salmond, BHP Country Manager Australia Petroleum, Michelle Andrews, Director-General of Department of Communities, our CEO Samantha Drury and Chair Mel Ashton, we hosted a breakfast event to celebrate BHPs continued partnership of the Reconnecting Lives Program (RLP). And, because the Petroleum team is always look...ing for opportunities to engage with the people we support, three of their representatives rolled up their sleeves and joined three RLP participants to prepare, cook and then share a delicious breakfast together with other employees from both BHP and St Barts, as well as some of our wonderful volunteers. Stay tuned for more news like this, as well as first-hand accounts from the people we support, and sign up to our e-news https://bit.ly/30zmhv7 See more

19.01.2022 Women seek the services of St Barts for a number of reasons - unfortunately, one of the most common is because they have endured domestic violence. Were committed to not only providing a safe space for these women to reside, but also the tools they need to take that next step toward independent living. Receiving letters of thanks like this one make the work we do all the more rewarding

19.01.2022 Chatting with our former resident and current volunteer Kerry this morning, City of Perth Mayoral candidate Sandy Anghie for Perth Lord Mayor acknowledged how important it is for everyone to give back and engage in community. "Having a home is absolutely crucial, but having a home and a purpose such as a job or volunteer work to go to is so important," she said. "There are so many great service providers in Perth - we dont need more we just need to better look after the ones we have. The money is there, its just not pointing in the right direction. Its time to put the money where the mouth is, and support organisations like St Barts to continue to provide their services to the people that need it."

19.01.2022 Making the most of the sunshine yesterday for the first volunteer activity at our Womens Service since restrictions have eased, and it was a huge success! Nine women turned out to paint their own pot and fill it with succulents. It is good therapy and good to be able to share with friends. - Kerry I have been here seven months and havent been able to do much I do love to garden and it will be nice to put it in my room and have something to look forward to every day. - Monica Volunteer Sharon, who has already been invited back for more, said it was a wonderful afternoon, and 18 year-old volunteer Layla said it was good fun and the women had helped improve her painting skills

19.01.2022 This guy Just like his poses, our Volunteer Coordinator Warren never ceases to make us laugh! So of course we wanted to ask him a few questions... Tell us something about yourself that might surprise us. When I was born 55 years ago, I was delivered in the middle of the Nullarbor Plain by the Flying Doctor. My dad was a Locomotive driver with Aust National Railways and back in the mid-sixties wives accompanied Loco drivers on long hauls. As usual I was overly inquisitive a...nd arrived a smidge early. If you could swap places with someone for a day, who would it be? Jeff Bezos, I reckon I could wreak havoc with his 200 Billion dollar bank account. Imagine how many lives you could brighten with that kind of disposable windfall !!!! What have you learnt from working at St Bart’s? I have learnt that we have some amazing front line staff that do some fantastic work. I am inspired by our volunteers who are driven by their hearts to be a part of what we do. I have learnt that a lot of my previous employment seems so unimportant when I compare the value of what we are able to do at St Bart’s. Love your work, Warren!

18.01.2022 What a night! The St Bart's Communications & Engagement team shopped, chopped, cooked and delivered a delicious roast dinner for the men in our accommodation service on Friday night in their first staff volunteer activity as a team. Finishing off with apple pie and ice cream for the sweet tooths it was a great experience and gave the team the opportunity to speak to and have a laugh with the guys outside of work hours.

18.01.2022 Its comments like these that make coming to work every day at St Barts so rewarding. To have the opportunity to help empower men and women to take control of their lives is extremely fulfilling. If youd like to join the team, take a look at our current job vacancies - https://stbarts.org.au/work-with-us/

18.01.2022 A huge thank you to St Georges Cathedral for keeping the people we support in your thoughts and hearts throughout these chilly months. The donations will be so welcome

18.01.2022 There’s nothing quite like getting some new wheels! The awesome team at Bitsa Bikes recycles discarded and unwanted bikes, which are then given to homeless shelters and people around Perth. The 9 bikes donated to St Bart’s Men’s Service and Reconnecting Lives Program (RLP) clients were put together by the Year 9 students at Carine Senior High School during their Design & Technology classes. Daniel and Kristie, pictured here, are very happy with their new bikes! Thank you so much to Paul from Bitsa Bikes for making this happen

17.01.2022 A big thank you to our amazing student, community and residential volunteers who have generously given up their spare time over the past two days to give part of our mens transitional accommodation facility a fresh coat of paint. The University of Western Australia student Ali said she has really enjoyed learning more about St Barts and chatting with our residents.

17.01.2022 "I believe I will leave St Barts with a future because I can have a future. I feel as if I have awoken from a bad dream. I know the past cannot be erased but it can be turned into a positive, and I see this when I share my story and see the positive impact it has had on people." The wonderful Milly who resides at our Womens Service has generously shared her story - from the darkest place she had ever been to her optimism for what the future now holds. Take a moment to have a read - https://bit.ly/3agfmKo

17.01.2022 The lovely Reverend Patricia Deeny of St Christopher's City Beach Anglican Parish and parishioner Lynne Roberts (below centre) dropped off 12 DVD players for our residents' use, along with a very generous $1000 donation towards our services! We're so grateful for our extended Anglican community and parish supporters, so our heartfelt thanks to all involved.

14.01.2022 There are over 14,000 people on the waitlist for social housing in WA - with an average wait time of over 2.5 years. Take a moment to let that statistic sink in. This week - Homelessness Week 2020 - is an opportunity to learn from the voices of people with lived experience of homelessness as well as the organisations that support them. Watch on to hear Nicoles story.... #HW2020 #ShelterWA

14.01.2022 As the school holidays come to a close, we're looking forward to our ongoing partnership with Hale School next term, which will see students volunteering with us. We're also extremely grateful for the connection we've made with Maureen, pictured, through a Hale School staff member. Maureen has been working on embroidering the names of the men in our transitional accommodation onto hand towels. A personalised gift like this is something so unexpected yet treasured by the men in our service. Thank you Maureen!

13.01.2022 HOMELESSNESS WEEK 2020 Here at St Barts, we know too well that it can take only a couple of unexpected life events for someone to fall into homelessness. This week - Homelessness Week - has a focus on Aboriginal homelessness as the week coincides with the 2020 Danjoo Koorliny Walking Together Social Impact Festival and the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Childrens Day. For more information visit Shelter WA.

13.01.2022 Meet Priscilla After spending five months at our Women’s Service to recuperate and gain the strength she needed after rehab, Priscilla recently moved into her own home. What’s more, in a couple of weeks she’ll be celebrating 12 months of sobriety! And while there are many things that make a house feel like a home, a handmade quilt really has a special quality. The gorgeous quilt on Priscilla's couch was gifted to her by Dawesville local Bev. Having made many quilts for her family and friends, Bev was very happy that she could contribute towards making some of our St Bart's residents feel comfort as they move on to live independently.

13.01.2022 Each year NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Here at St Bart's we'll be celebrating with a number of activities, which we can't wait to share with you over the coming days. The beautiful artwork below, titled Shape of Land, was designed by Tyrown Waigana, a Noongar and Saibai Islander man. #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek

12.01.2022 Today we celebrated St Bartholomews Feast Day with members of St Barts community gathering for a thanksgiving service led by The Most Reverend Kay Goldsworthy, Archbishop, who acknowledged there are many in our community who dont have a safe place to sleep at night. We are gathering here for one particular reason; we want everyone to feel safe, we want everyone to have somewhere they know they are loved and that they are valued, she said, thanking St Barts staff and vol...unteers for the support they provide on a daily basis. Following the service, Archbishop Kay had a tour of our Womens Service and the opportunity to talk to residents and learn about their experiences with homelessness. Our Chaplain Ross Jones was also a special guest on Sonshine FMs Mornings segment, speaking with announcer Chris Lockie Lock about a number of our programs, including our Womens Service. If you missed Ross interview, you can listen here- http://audio.98five.com/feeds/98five-20200824104346.mp3

11.01.2022 Many hands make light work in the garden. On Wednesday, St Barts volunteer squad mobilised to undertake a gardening blitz for one of our most adorable residents, Anne. It was a day of weeding, digging, planting and laughter as five volunteers armed with shovels, rakes, gloves and garbage bags slashed and dug through a plantation of weeds and even found Annes front hose that had been missing for months! The end results were fantastic and Anne was chuffed with her spruced up garden. Our volunteers are a fantastic bunch, and we thank Christian, Mark, Charlie and Mars for an amazing effort!

11.01.2022 We loved our time on ABC Focus this morning, where our very own Sara Zanella chatted about our Reconnecting Lives Program - which we are excited to share has been funded by BHP Western Australia for another two years! Sara was joined by two of our consumers, 40-year-old Sam and 74-year-old Anne. Sam shared his experiences of homelessness and addiction, and is now living independently and beginning studies in Community Service, while Anne spoke of her years of domestic viole...nce, living on the streets, the heartbreak of losing her two children, and how St Barts is now her family (she still manages to make us laugh all the time with her gorgeous sense of humour ) Have a listen to the full interview here - https://ab.co/2DcBMjK For more information on our Reconnecting Lives Program and its first phase outcomes, take a look here - https://bit.ly/2PmY4BK So what does your home mean to you? Can you imagine not having that space?

11.01.2022 How delicious do these cupcakes look? both residents and staff got to indulge in these little delights in honour of R U OK? Day, and it was smiles all round! We are better together, even if we are not ok, said one resident. Wanda, our wonderful manager of the Swan Community Recovery Village, said We work together to connect with each other. We know that just because someone carries it well it doesnt mean it isnt heavy. Its so important to be courageous and ask each o...ther if were doing ok - theyre some of the most significant conversations we have with each other. Love your work team!

10.01.2022 A big thank you to the members of the Ascension Craft Group in Midland who kindly made 500 green ribbons for our clients, residents and staff to wear in support of Mental Health Week. Their efforts are greatly appreciated.

10.01.2022 Meet Jack - the incredible Aquinas College student who has jumped into action and raised funds for St Barts after seeing some of the residents from our Womens Service while hanging out at his parents East Perth business one day. Drawing on his talent for baking, Jack cooked up delicious batches of cookies and as word got out, he soon had a backlog of orders from supporters both near and far, and raised an incredible $1844! We loved having the chance to meet with Jack and ...his lovely mum Fiona last week when they popped in to see us at our Cafe Lime, where they were able to chat with our CEO and some of the residents. Thank you Jack. Youre an inspiration and have such a bright future ahead of you! To place an order head over to @jackscreativekitchen on Instagram.

09.01.2022 Some casual but candid chats were had this morning when City of Perth mayoral candidate Di Bain spoke with some of our residents at Caf Lime before heading over to tour our Womens Service. I am really concerned that there is not enough accommodation for women and there are so many assets and buildings in the city that can be easily turned around to provide some short term crisis accommodation solutions. Given Perths post-COVID crisis, we are seeing more and more people present on the streets, and as a society we need to do more to help them. Thanks Di for taking the time to hear what St Barts, and the people we support, had to say. Tenant Neil supported the idea of a safe place for homeless people to be able to go and sleep in the city. Di Bain for Perth Lord Mayor

09.01.2022 Did you know that today is Stress Down Day? The fun and easy initiative was designed to reduce stress and raise vital funds for Lifeline. 08.01.2022 The sun was out when Perth Mayoral candidate Mark Gibson for Perth Lord Mayor joined residents at St Barts to talk about homelessness and other important issues facing the city. Mark said he had already identified privately-owned unused buildings in the city that could easily be converted to house people currently sleeping on the streets. After a visit to our unique Womens Service, Mark said transitional services like that were much needed to prepare people moving into their own accommodation. I live in the city and see the issues first hand, and in addition to more social housing and transitional accommodation, outreach programs that support people once they find a home are very important. Thanks Mark for taking the time out to visit St Barts.

07.01.2022 The rain ceased, the clouds parted and the sun came out just in time for this awesome show by Timothy Nelson and band on the terrace of our Community Housing building earlier this week. Complete with a BBQ lunch prepared by a couple of our amazing volunteers, it was just what was needed to break the week up. A huge thanks to the collaborative effort between WAM, Minderoo Foundation and 360 Artist Logistics that has made this and other performances possible for our residents throughout the pandemic

Ive wanted to meet Basil for such a long time Ken Dee Dee, related to the famous Jetta footy players, even got her son on the phone for ...a quick chat. 06.01.2022 How often do we slip on a pair of socks and give a thought to how lucky we are to have such a simple yet valuable luxury? The lovely Deb and super cute Cooper from Socks For Cooper do an amazing job of raising awareness of those who are experiencing homelessness or have otherwise fallen on hard times, as well as the elderly. Please take a moment to watch and, if you can, donate

05.01.2022 It was a cracking day on the terrace here today as we celebrated the birthdays of this boisterous bunch! They insisted they only turned 21 but we have an inkling theyre telling fibs In fact, it was a very special birthday (the big 5-0) for Athol on the left We were so grateful for the student volunteers from St Stephens School who cooked up a storm on the BBQ and engaged with our residents. Another group of St Stephens students were busy sorting out donated goods in the morning as we begin to prepare for our major Christmas appeal!

04.01.2022 It was a beautiful day of celebrating some of the traditions of Aboriginal culture at our Women’s Service on the weekend. The gorgeous Miss Perth NAIDOC 2019, Ilona McGuire, put on a fantastic display that included Wanna (women’s stick and digging stick), coolamon (collecting bowl), Wardi (men’s bat), message stick, Djanjanna (ceremony headdress pieces) and the river read weaved baskets, while she got busy mixing ochre pigments (white, red and yellow). Some of the Aboriginal residents also cooked up traditional kanagaroo tail stew and damper for lunch, and were joined by some of their children and grandchildren.

04.01.2022 We are incredibly grateful to Paris Mitchell for sharing his story on overcoming addiction and mental health challenges with residents, staff and volunteers as part of our Mental Health Week celebrations. Paris' inspirational and brutally honest talk resonated with everyone and we hope he continues to inspire others to realise their full potential. Following Paris' talk attendees enjoyed a bbq lunch provided by our amazing team of volunteers - who entertained the crowd with some impromptu singing and dancing!

03.01.2022 At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, we will remember them. Remembrance Day, a memorial day since the end of the First World War to remember the members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty. #remembranceday #wewillrememberthem #thefallen #respect

03.01.2022 Imagine, of all the days in the year, you find yourself homeless on Christmas day. Sadly for Sarah and her 12-year-old daughter Ella, they can't simply imagine this because it was their reality last year after fleeing a domestic violence situation. The next four months were spent couch surfing with friends and family while Ella continued in her first year of high school as though nothing had happened... until they found a safe place to stay with St Bart's. We need your help. Your donation today will support other vulnerable people in need of a secure place to sleep, just like Sarah and Ella, who can now look forward to a brighter Christmas.

03.01.2022 Strike a pose This team know how to have a few laughs while getting down to business! Our Consumer Volunteer Program is gaining momentum, with three St Bart’s residents here teaming up with three of our community volunteers in a gardening blitz at our Bentley service Encouraging our residents to get involved in volunteer activities not only keeps them active and engaged, it also helps with their resume. "It was really nice to be outside, active, and I loved being a part of a team to give back."

03.01.2022 We're extremely grateful to the Morawa-Perenjori parishioners for generously donating a variety of non-perishable food items for our clients and residents as part of their Harvest Thanksgiving Service. A big thank you to Rev Raymond and his wife Betty-Lou who drove the 350kms from Morawa to Perth to collect and drop off the goods. We're sure they'll be a big hit, particularly the chocolate biscuits!
