21.01.2022 Great post by @andrew_lock_strength THIS IS YOU! Meet your Homunculus!... This model is a representation of your somatosensory cortex. You cannot feel pain in your body. The information has to get to your brain from the body for it to be processed. No processing = no pain What Im showing here is how many nerves are devoted to different areas of your body by your brain. So your face and hands are very location precise. When you get input from these areas to your brain you can locate precisely when the input comes from. Looking at this model you can see how big the hands and face are. Look at the body! Very few nerves are devoted to this area. We all know people who have had low back pain and yet feel referred calf pain. This is where the brain has got the location wrong by almost 1 meter! So do you think your prodding finger will find its real location? Uh, no. This is why I tell people to stop pressing their back and looking for pain location. You wont find it. Chronic pain patients spend so much time pushing the backs trying to find it. Years later they are still pushing their backs. I tell patients to stop touching their backs. 1. It hasnt fixed it yet so stop doing it. 2. You are spending more time doing it than you used to when it began. So stop pushing your back trying to find it. I dont need you to locate it. I know where the pain comes from, I know what makes it better or worse just by talking to you. So stop the pain cycle by stop pushing and touching your back. Its all science. This time its neuroscience! #neuroscience #anatomy #physiotherapy #osteopathy #chiropractic #myotherapy #lowbackrehab #andrewlockstrength #homunculus

14.01.2022 Millions of dollars in Australia is spent on back pain imaging per year but there are many common misconceptions with spinal imagery that often lead to over dia...gnosis. In this episode of Talking Physio, Physiotherapists Dr Adrian Traeger, APAM, Associate Professor Tasha Stanton and Dr Emma Karran discuss why overdiagnosis is a huge problem and how it impacts our health systems. This episode is super interesting and a must listen for any working in allied health! 03.01.2022 Australian women are falling through the cracks when it comes to the diagnosis and treatment of physical injuries from vaginal births, such as pelvic organ prolapse and anal/urinary incontinence, which are often debilitating conditions that hugely effect a womans quality of life. Pelvic floor dysfunction can limit a womans ability to care for her children, exercise, work, socialise, and be intimate with her partner; and it can affect her emotionally and psychologically as s...he struggles to come to terms with her impairment. The Statistics: 15,000 to 30,000 women per year may suffer major irreversible physical birth trauma in the form of pelvic floor muscle and/or anal sphincter tears. 50 per cent of women who have had more than one vaginal delivery have some degree of pelvic organ prolapse this equates to millions of women who would have benefited greatly from early access to physiotherapy in the period post-birth. Up to 20% of all women who deliver a baby vaginally will end up with surgery for pelvic organ prolapse, anal or urinary incontinence. In 2013 it was estimated that the annual cost of incontinence in Australia is AUD$6.7 billion. Despite the fact that many cases of incontinence can be prevented or treated, 70% of those with symptoms do not seek treatment. The Australian Physiotherapy Association and the Australian Birth Trauma Association are working to make Pelvic Health Physiotherapy available through Medicare to all pregnant and postpartum women, for up to one year, post birth!
