19.01.2022 Day 2 of Women’s Health Week is about heart & blood vessel health. Think heart disease is a male only issue? Think again, coronary heart disease causes more deaths in women than men in Australia. And while men may feel pain in the centre of their chest, symptoms for women vary from breathlessness, nausea, tightness in the arms, back pain or a general feeling of being unwell. The way to prevent cardiovascular disease is to do something about the causes that put you at ...risk. Know and understand your blood pressure numbers & cholesterol levels. Eat a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, low-fat dairy foods, nuts, wholegrains, fish, chicken and lean meat, keeping saturated fats and salt to a minimum. Add in soluble fibre & limit the amount of alcohol you have each day. Take steps to manage your weight if you are overweight. Depression and diabetes have been linked to cardiovascular disease, so it is important to manage these conditions. Speak to your doctor for advice. Make an appointment with a dietician for help with food choices. And see an exercise physiologist for ways to get you moving safely. See more

15.01.2022 It’s easy to start the week feeling good but it takes some effort to finish the week feeling the same way. Here’s a good little simple exercise to keep the shoulders loose before you jump in or on to the water.

13.01.2022 Happy New Year! Wishing everyone a safe, happy and steady 2021.

11.01.2022 NAIDOC 2020 This year's theme is Always Was, Always Will Be. It recognises that First Nations people have cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. Surf Life Physio’s main sports clinic is on Bundjalung Nation in the region of Yugumbeh speaking people. We wish to acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded and that we operate on stolen land. As well as the main sports clinic we also operate out of multiple Kalwun Development Corporation Ltd centres on the Gold Coast a...nd wish to join them in celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people’s. From National NAIDOC: We are spiritually and culturally connected to this country. This country was criss-crossed by generations of brilliant Nations. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. Australia has the world’s oldest oral stories. The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies. We built and engineered structures - structures on Earth - predating well-known sites such as the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge. Our adaptation and intimate knowledge of Country enabled us to endure climate change, catastrophic droughts and rising sea levels. Always Was, Always Will Be acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and our cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future. Through ingenious land management systems like fire stick farming we transformed the harshest habitable continent into a land of bounty. NAIDOC Week 2020 acknowledges and celebrates that our nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact whether in 1770 or 1606 - with the arrival of the Dutch on the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula. The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples. Our coastal Nations watched and interacted with at least 36 contacts made by Europeans prior to 1770. Many of them resulting in the charting of the northern, western and southern coastlines of our lands and our waters. For us, this nation’s story began at the dawn of time. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations. It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet and to recognise that our sovereignty was never ceded. Always Was, Always Will Be. 09.01.2022 Day 1 of Women’s Health Week 2020 Kicking it off for the week will be looking at the wonders of down under (no...not talking about Australia....think down under). There are two main types of regular health screening checks for taking care of your gynaecological health. For some women, getting these health checks can feel awkward, but having a regular doctor, going to a women’s health centre or sexual health clinic, or asking your female friends for their recommendations c...an make the process easier. During COVID-19, while we stayed and are staying home to help ‘flatten the curve’, many of us missed getting our regular health checks. This week is all about getting back on track. Women’s Health Physio, Kate @dnspelvicfloorphysio is available at Surf Life for all your questions regarding these amazing organs which impact your health in so many ways.
