23.01.2022 A big congratulations to Chrissys Reef Crusaders (pictured) in participating for Swim For The Reef 2019! Chrissy and her mum both spent their Sunday swimming laps together for the Reef, finishing the day off with a combined total of 44 laps (440m). The event was great and I cant wait to follow so many more groups to come, said Chrissy.... 16.01.2022 Shoutout to Miya and the Eacham Eco Crew, who will be swimming at the beautiful Wet Tropics of Queensland in the heritage listed Lake Eacham this weekend. Joined by her family (including two of her kids on kayaks), neighbours, and close friends, the Eacham Eco Crew is a multi-generational swimming team whose passion for the environment has driven them to raise awareness about the importance of the Great Barrier Reef. I felt inspired to take up the challenge as it enables me ...to combine my love of swimming at Lake Eacham with my long-standing admiration and respect the important work that the EDO Qld team do. Its a great way to give back to a small organisation that helps keep our amazing natural places special in the face of so many pressures. I feel it is incumbent upon each and every one of us to do our bit to protect the Reef, in whatever capacity we can act. The Reef is too special not to protect, and the more people who are aware and actively involved in its protection, the greater our chances of preventing irreversible damage to this remarkable living organism. You can support the Eacham Eco Crew by heading to https://swimforthereef.everydayhero.com/au/eacham-eco-crew.

14.01.2022 Howre we going?? Are we there yet?? Our swimming campaign runs to and including Sunday 10 Feb, with donations coming in and still counting! Every year we tally up our distance with the ultimate goal of swimming the entire length of the Great Barrier Reef. ... Lots of folks are still swimming and giving, and we cant wait to see if we make it to our goal this year! Team leaders - dont forget to tally up all your kilometres swum and send it in by next Monday! Some keen beans from our Musgrave Park Pool event are still adding on the kilometres to their total! If this is you, make sure youre letting your team leaders know any additional distance youre racking up, so they can send in a tally of kilometres swum (NOT INCLUDING our already famous lap tally from Saturday) by Monday evening. All totals will then be sent to our cartographer Peter who will prepare this years map for the big reveal!

10.01.2022 Meet the Wello Pointers! Supported by kayakers and stand-up paddle boarders, the Wello Pointers are swimming in Moreton Bay this Saturday from Wellington Point Reserve beach area to King Island (Yerra-bin), along the western side of the sandbank. The sandbank is partially made up of coral from an ancient coral reef. Moreton Bay is full of coral reefs and we need to protect ALL reefs, for present and future generations.... You can donate to the Wello Pointers or find out more at edoqld.org.au/wello-pointers

10.01.2022 Meet the Magnetic Island Sweetlips! They are a team of twelve environmentally-conscious Magnetic Island residents who swam over 100 kilometres for Swim for The Reef 2019, and raised a stunning $2,489. The Great Barrier Reef is important to the Magnetic Island Sweetlips as their location means they can see first-hand the impacts of various activities on the Reef, particularly climate change.... Its part of our daily living, being in the Great Barrier Reef environment, so we can see the pressures on the Reef and we want to help the environment of Magnetic Island and the region. As Magnetic Island is mostly a National Park within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, the team believes it is important, as residents, to contribute to the conservation of the Reef for present and future generations. The idea to set up the team drew on the experience of one of its members, Lea, who participated in this campaign as an individual swimmer last year. By creating the Magnetic Island Sweetlips, the team hopes to generate more participation of local residents in this campaign as most of the other teams involved are city and southside based. We care about what happens to the environment around us and want to see it protected for future generations and the many people that currently come to visit from Australia and overseas. We want to ensure that our passion translates into further support for the proper stewardship and management of the Reef in 2019. Thank you Magnetic Island Sweetlips! Your efforts and enthusiasm have been awesome!

04.01.2022 TEAM PROFILE: Dressed in dots and spots, the Wobbegongs team is making a splash at Musgrave pool on February 2nd! Named after a native shark found in Queensland, Wobbegong is believed to translate to shaggy beard in Australian Aboriginal language. Lead by Jo-Ann Bragg, CEO of EDO Qld and creator of Swim for the Reef, the group of Musgrave locals and friends believe that the reef is in need of help. During Jos last visit to the reef she recounted seeing bleached sites,... and areas damaged both by crown-of-thorns and extreme weather. I saw a number of different causes of damage to the Reef. But, the bleached coral was the one that we can control by reducing greenhouse gas emissions urgently. The Wobbegongs have embraced this event as it continues to contribute positively to the Reef. Is upsetting to see such beautiful and living things being turned to white powder. The Wobbegongs have been a part of Swim for the Reef since the very beginning. This years event marks their fourth year of participation.
