24.01.2022 DG-1001E neo takes-off for the first time https://www.dg-flugzeugbau.de//dg-airc/erstflug-dg-e/18707 The DG-1001E successfully performed its maiden flight in ...the beginning of July. The DG-1001s new version with FES-System by LZ Design was piloted by Jelmer Wassenaar, Head of Engineering at DG. The glider took-off with 18m neo wing tips and small FES Batteries (2x 14S / 4,2kWh). The sustainer system worked perfectly right from the beginning. On both seats there is a FES control unit including main switch which enables controlling the system from both seats. Equivalent to the single-seater system the pilot may use the motor easily by activating the main switch and turning the rpm potentiometer. Instantly the motor will start and bring the glider back to safe altitude. With the small battery we currently achieve around 15 minutes of climb at 1m/s. Alternatively the pilot can do level flight at 105km/h for half an hour. In order to significantly increase this performance we wait for bigger batteries to be cleared for use in the DG-1001. According to the latest EASA standards the batteries need to run through different tests successfully before they may be used in flight. These tests are not completed yet. The new 20m neo wing tips will be ready for test flights. We already had the chance to deliver the first customer aircraft. FSR Kraichgau is the first proud owner of a DG-1001E neo since one week now. Besides FES, the glider is equipped with a handicap system. Thanks to the cooperation with Aktion Mensch (a German social organization) and DG Flugzeugbau, Martin Koehl the clubs handicapped pilot will also be able to take-off in this beautiful glider. At present, DG Flugzeugbau conducts flight tests for certifying the DG-1001E for aerobatics. In order to fulfil its role as versatile aircraft, it will still be possible to perform aerobatics in 17.2m configuration and without FES batteries. As soon as the new 20m neo tips are available we will also begin offering test flights and are very much looking forward to see our customers taking a ride!

24.01.2022 Camden is well known world wide for it's Gliding for over the past 60 years. The past six months have been a struggle with dust storms , bushfires , smoke haze , flooding rain's and wet runways. Over the last couple of weeks we have had limited opportunity to fly due to social distancing and now with essential travel only we have ceased all operations for the forseeable future. Over the years a lot of commercial and military pilots started in gliders with the instruction fr...om the many volunteer pilots that give up there time freely to pass on their knowledge and experience To them we say thank you. Attached are photos from our last flight last weekend over Camden Valley Everyone stay safe and we will see you on the other side. Bill Wotten CFI.

23.01.2022 MY NOTE: this is a copy/paste from an email from Wings and Wheels. Good read IMO. Editors Note: Even when taking precautions tow out gear accidents happen. A r...eport from this accident pictured above. " I heard a metallic sound and saw a wing lift in the rearview mirror, so stopped the pickup. Immediately its left-wing smashed against the tailgate while the tail went swiftly past the driver-side window and slammed into the front fender. Putting this together analytically, a powerful whirlwind (dust devil, if there had been dust) had pounced. The tail dolly had been split at the hinges, releasing the glider to be driven forward." Tow Out Gear Accidents I should start with a disclaimer. I run Yankee Composites a repair station, specializing in composite sailplanes. I also am the US Representative for Schempp-Hirth. The disclaimer is if you don’t follow this advice I can help you purchase your new glider or help you fix your broken one. SLOW THE F&)K DOWN If you can’t walk along the side of your car while towing, you are going too fast. If your windows are up with the radio on, you probably are not paying attention to what is going on outside. Tow out gear is very convenient you do not have to walk your wing like it is 1960. It is also great job security for me. I have yet to be at a contest where something was not damaged by the tow out gear. This damage not limited to, split elevators, split rudders, removed rudders, aileron damage, runway lights plucked from the ground, corporate jets grounded, hangers scratched (the winglet suffered worse), broken rear windows. Treat it like you mean it Your 40 yr old glider that you inspect every year, you keep in a hanger and never leave it outside, is well taken care of. I have written in the past about neglecting your trailer. But I have never mentioned the tow out gear you leave out in the rain and sun when you fly, toss into the back of the car when not using, drop in the ground when you remove from the glider, you know those three pieces you do not treat as well as your glider. You somehow imagine that those Home Depot latches and hinges riveted through a few layers of glass are going to perform miracles and stay together all these years? When a hinge is held in by 3 rivets and 2 are clearly lose, you are playing on borrowed time. You are towing your $260,000 glider hoping that 6 rivets don’t snatch right out. Pay attention to where you are going. Drive with windows down, paying attention in the mirrors, remember your car might be 2 meters wide, but the glider behind you is 15 meters. Even after the driver asked me Are we clear? I looked out the window and said Yes", we still hit a post. I still have nightmares of that fateful drive. (editors note: I still have the FAI SGP flag from that post you hit as a souvenir.) The land speed record was an ASG29 in Finland full of water approaching 30mph. The entire grid watched in anticipation. It was uneventful this time but would have been epic. WIND There is nothing sexier than the Concordia towing out to the grid with its 2 wing wheels. Those of us that don’t want two wing wheels many times hang a gallon of water or a parachute on the tip to help keep the weight on that wing wheel. There is a lot of surface area. One taxiway you might have a crosswind from the left holding the wing wheel on the ground the next might be trying to lift it up. This is bad. Now the glider is leaning over and dragging on that wing. Putting a lot of side load on the tail dolly and those 6 rivets. Brakes Slamming on the brakes puts all that side load and now all the rolling mass and moves it forward. Something might give, and the glider tail goes crashing into the car. Composite gliders are strong but they are not built for impacts on the control surface backwards... As you see the wing rotating slow down you can stop before it hits the ground. This should be easy because you are only going at a walking pace. Thanks for your time, everyone! Your new tow out gear is available from Wings and Wheels, and your expensive repair (Closely followed by new tow out gear) is available from Yankee Composites! Daniel L Johnson

17.01.2022 Here's a use for a Caribou that nobody I'll bet would have envisaged, a flying glider trailer! Forbes Aerodrome, circa 1980, the location of several gliding clu...b summer camps, hosted by the local Forbes Gliding Club. This year, the RAAF Richmond Gliding Club bought a new Romanian IS28 B2 all metal 2 Seater sailplane but as yet had no trailer for it. Somehow they got permission to have it flown to Forbes and back, not by aerotow, an arduous task with risks of an outlanding, but inside a Caribou, with the tail and wing tips partially sticking out of the back with the doors open. In case of an outlanding, they approached our club, Concordia, who also had an IS28 B2 with a trailer, if they could borrow our trailer if needed.

11.01.2022 Day 14 in Quarentine got me like...

11.01.2022 Another wonderful Winters day. From the ground.

10.01.2022 ** Widespread rain and East Coast Low potential for southern and eastern Australia ** A dynamic weather situation is unfolding across southern and eastern Austr...alia, as a upper level cold pool interacts with a surface trough over the east of the country, bringing potential for widespread rain and a potential east coast low over the coming days. A high over the Tasman Sea is currently directing a humid onshore flow over the nation's east coast into a developing trough, generating showers along the coastal strip and causing moisture to push inland. Meanwhile, an upper level cold pool is making its way towards South Australia and is due to affect the state tomorrow, bringing showers, possible thunderstorms and the risk of small hail. This approaching feature will cause an amplification of the surface trough over eastern Australia tomorrow as well, causing rain and thunderstorms to develop over parts of southern Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. Over the weekend, this cold pool will push gradually east and continue to bring with it rain and storms across parts of SA, VIC, NSW and QLD. As the system approaches the east coast and reaches higher levels of moisture and slightly more than average ocean temperatures, rain and thunderstorms have potential to become heavier as the trough deepens further. There is growing consensus that a low is likely to form within the trough as it moves offshore around Monday or Tuesday next week and bring heavy rainfall to eastern NSW, although this is highly dependent on where the low forms. With such a dynamic system and the convective nature of the sytem, rainfall amounts are difficult to predict, particularly from early next week. Across many parts of VIC, inland NSW and southern QLD, widespread totals of 5-25mm are likely, possibly heavier about the ranges. However, depending on where the low forms (and how close to the coast it gets), coastal rainfall has potential to be in excess of 100mm. If the low forms close to the coast, damaging wind gusts are also a chance as well as potential for rough seas and large swells. There are also indications of possible snow as far north as the NSW Northern Tablelands early next week. Our team at EWN will post regular updates as this system unfolds over the coming days. 08.01.2022 Off the coast south of Sydney today.

08.01.2022 POTENTIAL EAST COAST LOW During late Thursday or early Friday, a significant low is currently forecast to deepen in the Tasman Sea, off the southern NSW... coast. This system is likely to remain in the area over a number of days, potentially developing multiple centres which pivot around the main centre, meaning bursts of heavy rain and strong winds for the coast. Strong winds around 50-70km/h with localised higher gusts in excess of 90km/h, large surf and heavy showers will develop along the southern half of the coast during this time. Snowfall is also possible over alpine regions and even throughout central parts of the state. We will bring you more information as the system develops. - Early Warning Network
