For the last two months, 81-year-old Khaira has been serving meals free of cost to scores of travellers on the National Highway-7. His ramshackle tin shed with plastic sheets is the only spot that serves meals on a stretch of nearly 450 km. "This is a remote, tribal region. Behind us for nearly 150-km, and ahead for nearly 300 km, there's not a single dhaba or restaurant... So most people prefer to halt at 'Guru ka langar' and avail of our round-the-clock services," says Khaira. And that's not all. 03.01.2022 It's 10th of June of 1190, the Western Emperor Frederick I Hohenstaufen drowns inside the waters of the Saleph river, in the Armenian Christian realm of Cilicia.... Barbarossa had began his journey in the East so to reach the Holy Land as part of the event that historiography today calls "the Third Crusade". The German imperial army that crossed the Balkan, Greek and Asia Minor lands owned the greatest numbers that those South European roads would ever witness since the birth of the western crusade movement. The Roman emperor of this period, Isaac II Angelos, having solid speculations that Frederick wished to conquer and inflict harm in the imperial lands (during the Second Crusade a younger Frederick had demolished an Orthodox abbey and later was involved in a Cold War with the basileus Manuel I Komnenos), tried to control tight and sabotage the marching of the German army through the empire. This resulted in hostilities between both sides and the destruction of many Macedonian and Thracian lands by the Germans, especially in the Greek countryside. Once the Romans allowed them to cross in Asia Minor, the German troops met with a great resistance from the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum, but in the bloody battles that followed, Frederick triumphed over the Turks, broke and stormed the gates of Konya, the prosperous capital of the Turkish world and significantly weakened the Sultanate. Despite the successful confrontations of Barbarossa until his reach in Cilicia, the imperial troops were victorious but also wounded by both the Romans and the Turks.
