22.01.2022 So proud of my client Kirsta from Mutual Muse! (Also, Kirsta said the journo found them by searching ‘second hand shops Melbourne’ so the dream-team website build with @Paradise Studio WORKED, people!)

22.01.2022 On ‘World Kindness Day’ I’m reflecting on the kindness I’ve received over the last tough few months, and it’s been in the form of generosity and understanding, as well as invitations for self-reflection, being heard, and even from having my opinions challenged! Kindness does indeed bind us, heart to heart. I’ve also been reflecting on ‘kindness’ as an idea on social media. Kindness doesn’t feel like a business value or content pillar to me. I believe kindness is a basel...ine and the *bare minimum* we can do to be good people.Potentially unpopular opinion alert: I also see ‘kindness’ being weaponised on social media into a sort-of shield against criticism and accountability. Integrity does not feel like a business value to me either it feels like it should just be a state of being. I feel like you can value integrity in yourself and others...but also...shouldn’t we just act with integrity anyway? Another thing that doesn’t feel like a content pillar is authenticity. It feels like a state of being, and if we just live and show up authentically coupled with boundaries that protect ourselves and others surely that’s just a way to ‘be’? We shouldn’t have to ‘humanise’ things if we’re just showing up as ourselves and aligned to our values? I don’t see empathy as a business value or content pillar either. More thoughts on empathy are in my last post. I believe that if you are kind, acting with integrity, you are authentic, and you are empathetic, you usually don’t need to tell people. I’d love to hear your thoughts! 21.01.2022 I have a lot to say. You may have noticed. A lot to say about copy, about justice, about marketing, and about life. I currently have a very small email list of people who have been clients, who filled in a survey late last year, and about 6 of you who used my website newsletter signup ... But I want to start again and do this with strong, definite consent. SO! If you want to sign up and occasionally see the inside of my brain my newsletter link is below. (Also, don’t expect a welcome sequence of emails because I haven’t written it yet...) Sign up here: https://tinyurl.com/y2yskr2x

15.01.2022 We know that sharing our stories connects us with other people. It feels vulnerable, and people connect to that vulnerability. It makes our brands feel human. However, there are times when it is tempting to use stories involving other people as a marketing tool particularly when we’ve been hurt by them in some way. As an example, there have been times over my two businesses that have really challenged me, personally and professionally. ...But what I’ve shared publicly are the LESSONS I’ve learned. There’s a certain point where we need to say ‘am I sharing this to position myself a rung above someone on the ladder’ and also ‘how does this serve my brand, and the wider public?’ Please know: I’m not talking about calling out (or in) another person for bigotry, or holding people accountable (though I think there are ways and means for that) or other extremely important discussions. I’m talking about what Robert W Fuller the person who coined the phrase ‘rankism’ says, that no person's dignity is any less worthy of respect, any less sacred than anyone else’s. When we share our lessons, we are sharing the truth of our story without the indignity of putting another down. We’ve taken the time to learn and process our lessons, and that’s truly authentic and vulnerable as well as respectful and human. That’s when our storytelling is generous and impactful. [Image description: A peachy-pink graphic tile, with white writing that says 'Dignity and storytelling'. It has my 'That Sounds Nice' logo in the top lefthand corner in dark pink, and a illustrated shape down the bottom in the middle, in the same dark pink]

14.01.2022 When your copy does exactly what it says on the tin One of my faves Liz Filmer Landscaping took the time to send me an email to let me know that her recently-launched website is already converting prospects into paying clients. And not just that they’re her ‘ideal’ clients too. What more could a client and her copywriter ask for? ... (Pssst! If you’ve been thinking about new copy, send me a DM. I’m currently booking into March and April Getting the ball rolling now avoids disappointment later!)

13.01.2022 We’ve decided to open my husband’s Cyclespeed doors tomorrow as a drop off point for Foodbank Bic for bushfire disaster relief. Below is a list of things Foodbank are requesting: Good quality tinned food (with ring pulls), UHT milk, water, items that are easy to just ‘grab and go’ like muesli bars, cereals, biscuits and pantry staples. We are also accepting pet food, sanitary and personal hygiene items including toilet paper, toothbrushes, deodorant etc. also nappies, wip...es and formula. Please do not donate any razors, medicine, alcohol, bedding or clothing (new or used). Other charities will accept these items, but Foodbank’s sole focus is to provide emergency food relief. We would love it if our local business friends could share this post too 10am - 12pm tomorrow (Sunday 5th) 114a Martin St, Brighton. Thank you!

12.01.2022 A beautiful post from my beautiful client Liz Filmer Landscaping

12.01.2022 It’s been 27 days since I started a medication for anxiety, and this is what I know: I know that an SSRI is now a crucial part of my self-care. For me, it puts a small but important ‘space’ between me and anxiety, allowing me to do the ‘work’ where needed, but also allowing me to realise that this might not be about ‘work’ at all; it might be about chemicals and brains and stuff I cannot ‘fix’, and that’s okay. I know I feel no shame nor need to justify taking an SSRI beca...use I know that my GP and I (along with my psychologist, who I’m seeing tomorrow) work together in a holistic way to keep me self-aware, heathy and curious. I know I ride on the shoulders of those who went before me, destigmatising mental health care and medication, and those who are still fighting for more access to mental health care. I know that talking openly about mental health helps other small business owners, because they’ve told me. I know my clients are cheering me on, on a deep, empathetic and personal level, because they’ve told me. That’s been part of the healing of the past 27 days. I know yesterday was World Mental Health day, in a particularly tough year for a lot of us. If you’re in Australia, you can access a mental health plan via your GP, which gives you access to mental health care subsidies. 11.01.2022 This is what community looks like. I am absolutely blown away by all of you. -1 massive truck (huge thanks to our mates at Thrifty Brighton)... -9 van loads (maybe more, I’m guessing than number) -At least 30 people packing boxes, some who just turned up to donate and just decided to hang around) - The team from New Gisborne Primary who helped us unload at the other end, AFTER they’d unloaded all their own stuff. And all of you who donated goods and time today. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. All donations went to Foodbank Victoria, who, by the way, are completely f***ing incredible.

11.01.2022 Defining your purpose and values for your brand doesn’t just give you a framework for your comms. It also serves as a form of protection: You begin to ask yourself if the prospects contacting you are in alignment with your values. Even better, you start ATTRACTING more clients who are aligned with your values and fewer who aren’t You begin to view some marketing tactics through a lens of equity, rankism and values, rather than falling prey to flashy photos, s...ix-figure promises and (often false) scarcity and urgency You begin to trust yourself. You begin to trust your instincts. You build quality networks. You’re less beholden to one network ‘pool’ because each network pool has some aligned businesses. You don’t feel obligated to anyone. This is why I’m doing Speak Out Studio’s 15-week brand plan, despite the fact I’ve already done values and purpose work AND despite the fact my Nice Guide includes values and purpose work. This will help me, and help me serve you. Plus, Brand Plan is so much more than that and I don’t share this as any kind of affiliate of Serena’s, either. I’m not. I genuinely believe in her methods (I did a tester version of Brand Plan when Covid hit) and her ability to disseminate info and push you to interpret it for you own brand. It starts on Friday see you there? (Shout out to Hamilton the musical for this version of this quote. And massive thanks to Kelly Diels for blowing my mind) [image description: A patterned cream tile, with the text ‘If you stand for nothing, what will you fall for?’ The word ‘stand’ is underlined, and the word ‘fall’ is circled, for emphasis.]

04.01.2022 I’m chuffed to bits! Sometimes you do a job that leaves you proud as punch because it combines your skillzzzz, your ethics and a little bit of luck! I love what Mutual Muse do they buy and sell contemporary second hand clothes meaning you can shop for contemporary fashion, and sell the clothes you’re no longer wearing, giving them a second life.... Owner Kirsta is a powerhouse and a dreamboat to work with, and the Mutual Muse customers and staff are passionate and totally engaged in the Mutual amuse concept! And by engaged, I mean: we had 436 responses to our customer survey which meant we were writing this project from solid data and not assumptions. The most challenging page and my fave was the ‘About’ page, and in particular, conveying Mutual Muses’s values of personal style of trends, sustainability and inclusion. When we write, no matter who we write for, what we’re selling or what we’re saying, our words have power and must always be chosen carefully. I’m so proud of this project thank you for choosing me, Kirsta. Incredible web design by Paradise Studio Design

01.01.2022 Here’s something to think about this coming IWD: why is your target market ‘women’, if you truly believe that gender is a spectrum? . What if we stop focussing on the gender of your ‘ideal client’, and focus on their values instead? . I want a client who values collaboration, creativity and courage. I want a client who trusts my vision, but isn’t afraid to question my direction. I want a client who aligns with my values of inclusiveness, joy, curiosity and remaining true to m...yself. . It has nothing to do with their gender identity. . This may be challenging thought. And I’m glad. . #iWD2020 #eachforequal #eachforequal2020 See more

01.01.2022 Not all empathy is created equal: there are different types: COGNITIVE EMPATHY This it’s not really empathy by feeling, it’s empathy by thinking. A certain amount of cognitive empathy is useful in business & understanding our clients. ... Cognitive empathy can be used for good or evil: it's what charismatic leaders, narcissists and cults use to make people feel 'understood' In marketing, it's used to find 'pain points', but the paradigm is hopefully shifting away models like 'Pain>Agitate>Solve', toward anti-oppressive models #Phew EMOTIONAL EMPATHY Empathy is a spectrum, so unless you’re absolutely unable to feel empathy, we’re all somewhere along it there’s no 'empathy competition'. Along that spectrum is ‘highly sensitive’, where I probably sit, particularly when I’m overwhelmed. Part of my recent battle was the inability to seperate myself from feeling as if I could feel ALL THE THINGS from ALL THE PEOPLE, including my clients. For me, not being able to separate can = not being able to help. Emotional empathy can stop you in your tracks, so let’s move on to my fave: COMPASSIONATE EMPATHY Here’s the sweet spot! Compassionate empathy is the ability to genuinely understand, relate to and respect others, and then take action, or help them take action. Living and working my strong personal and professional values has meant attracting aligned clients who are also grounded in theirs. This moves quickly moves us from ‘yes I can do the job’ cognitive empathy to real, compassionate empathy, trust, and even friendship. I also believe this takes our businesses from just ‘money-makers’ to points of true connection for our clients and ourselves. A final point: ‘empathy’ doesn’t feel like a business value to me, nor a marketing pillar. When you want to live and work with empathy, just LIVE IT and BE IT, and value it in others Image description: A cream, tonal-patterned graphic tile that says ‘What are we really talking about when we talk about ‘empathy’?’ The ‘really’ is circled and the ‘empathy’ is underlined for emphasis. It also features my TSN logo in pink.
