24.01.2022 Pain is a sensory and emotional experience. Pain can be many qualities such as sharp, dull, aching, burning, throbbing and prickly like pins and needles. Emotionally, it can be exhausting, confronting, and stressful. There are many things that can be introduced to assist with managing pain. Here are 3 of our top tips: Using heat/cold: Heat can help with stiff joints and muscles, and promote blood flow to assist tissue healing. Cold is best used when the pain is "acute" and i...nflammation is present. Energy conservation: Use different parts of your body to take the load off the painful area. If the small joints of the hand are injured, take advantage of using the larger joints of your body like your shoulder and upper body to create the movement. Relax: When we are feeling stressed, our muscles tense up. This can exacerbate painful joints and injured areas. Try and focus on rest breaks when you feel stress or anxiety build up. Let's have a chat if you need some more advice!

24.01.2022 SUFFERING FROM PAIN? // Pain management is one of our specialties! We use several techniques to help reduce pain, from applying heat to the area and scar massage, to more specialised techniques like dry needling, kinesiotaping, soft tissue therapy, and use of our state-of-the-art Inter X device. 22.01.2022 We educate our patients who've had surgery on how to manage their scars very early on. Did you know it's possible to reduce the look, texture, and mobility of you scar with scar massage? We also have special silicon products which can help to reduce the deposit of collagen at you scar, helping it to remain soft, flat, and pale in colour (versus pigmented) even on scars several years old.

20.01.2022 RING SPLINTS // These aesthetic custom measured splints are cleverly designed to prevent finger joints moving beyond their straight position (is. bending backwards), in extra flexible or bendy joints. Extremely practical They reduce joint pain while allowing greater hand control for everyday tasks These splints are often used for patients with hypermobile joints, and also for Swan Neck Deformities. Available here at The Therapy Space WA, talk to our friendly team and ask us how! www.thetherapyspacewa.com.au

19.01.2022 SPLINTS + BENDY JOINTS // If you have hypermobile (extra moveable) joints in your hands and fingers, one of the ways we can help you get about your day with less pain and more stability, is by the use of a splint. Splints vary greatly depending on what joint we need to stabilise. We can even make SAME DAY CUSTOM SPLINTS during your appointment, using waterproof thermoplastic! You'll see some great examples of splints we make coming up, out of this amazing material

17.01.2022 Back to school! This week ahead will see our bright young clients return to school for Term 1. For many with hypermobility conditions who experience joint and muscle pain, we have been working hard on pain management to help with handwriting. This can be as simple as introducing some taping, or putty exercises to build up the small muscles in the hand. We love helping students in this area, and above all, we make it fun!

13.01.2022 Your house alarm is going off. It goes off all day, every day, and it's LOUD. But there's no one in the house. . . This is Chronic Pain. The body's alarm system is constantly going off and there is not necessarily a trigger for it. We see patients who have long-term pain each and every week, and we see the struggle they have in engaging in work, hobbies, socialising and self-care. Feel free to send us a message to ask how we tackle chronic pain and focus on your function in everyday life.

12.01.2022 CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME // This is a painful and debilitating condition where a major nerve (median nerve) becomes compressed in a tunnel at the base of the palm. . . The result? Pain in the tunnel, hand weakness, and numbness/tingling particularly in the thumb, index and middle fingers. Hand therapy helps to reduce symptoms and improve hand function through splinting, and education on how to further aid healing while still being able to use your hand

07.01.2022 BENDY JOINTS // Here at The Therapy Space WA, we see lots of people with extra bendy joints where pain and fatigue can be really common. Is writing difficult? Participating in school or work causing you pain? We refer to it as "hypermobility", which is, extra motion in joints. An example of a hypermobility condition we see a lot in the clinic is Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. We can offer lots of practical advice and therapy to help you with managing pain in every day activity. Your ability to function is important to us!

07.01.2022 Here is one of our patients who is currently working very hard to gain wrist and finger movement following a distal radius (wrist) fracture 11 weeks ago, complicated by elevated pain levels. Prior to therapy today, she was unable to touch her thumb to her ring and little fingers, and within a few minutes, she has made huge improvement. Here we are using the InterX to reduce pain at her wrist level as she moves her fingers.
