25.01.2022 GOLD NUGGET #16 I remember the first time I read this paragraph. It hit me like a bolt of lightning. What a strange kind of comfort it brought to think that there could be something more poisonous than the feeling that always felt the hardest to bear: guilt. #gabormaté #guilt #resentment #soul #wisdom #consent

24.01.2022 GOLD NUGGET #15 A perceptive nugget-reader recently (in response to Gold Nugget #10 by Gabor Maté) wondered about how capable we are of changing, given how much of our personality is determined before and during infancy. Pat Ogden gives a nice explanation here of what neuroscience tells us about our ability to change, even late in life, if only we're willing to challenge ourselves. ... #change #challenge #comfortzone #neuroplasticity #windowoftolerance #brain #habits #patogden #sensorimotorpsychotherapy

23.01.2022 This meditation is designed to boost feelings of compassion and acceptance towards yourself. Please note: it is not intended as a substitute for assistance from a mental health professional. Artwork by Jen Clark at jenclarkdesign.com.au

20.01.2022 GOLD NUGGET #14 On its surface, this assertion by Joshua L. Cherniss seems kind of bleak. But it also reminds me of the story of Pandora's jar and how the only thing left inside after she'd unleashed hardship, starvation, pain, anarchy, lies, quarrels, disputes, wars, battles, manslaughters and murders...was hope. ... #joshualcherniss #existentialtherapy #uncertainty #truth #happiness #hope #selfactualisation

19.01.2022 GOLD NUGGET #18 A chunky nugget today from Irvin Yalom. It probably needs a couple of read-throughs to be fully grasped, but it's worth the chewing. #love #loving #need #isolation #self #relationship #connection #existential #psychotherapy #consciousness #existence #awareness #acceptance #irvinyalom #yalom

18.01.2022 With massage on hiatus, I've been running some online guided meditations and people have told me they've been useful. So I thought I'd offer a meditation here to help bring you back into your body and boost feelings of safety and connection - those fundamental needs that have to be in place before we can do any of the higher-order stuff. All you need is a chair, a willing spirit and about 24 minutes of your time.... Let me know if you find it helpful and I'll make more. Wishing you all peace and strength. P.S. If you are struggling with your mental health, there's a wealth of resources on the Time & Space website here: http://timeandspacetherapies.com.au/depression-and-anxiety/

17.01.2022 It's moments like this that really bring home the risks of massaging right now. (From today's newspaper.)

17.01.2022 GOLD NUGGET # 17 It can be so hard to remember that we have inherent value as human beings, regardless of our achievements, deeds or actions. Thanks to John Bradshaw for this reminder. ... #shame #toxicshame #selfworth #self #value #esteem #accomplishments #achievements #being #doing #johnbradshaw

17.01.2022 We're all hanging out for a massage, but it's not safe to get back on the table just yet. Some of my colleagues and I put together this little video to explain why we're hands-off for COVID-19. Please watch and share with anyone you know who is hanging out for a massage...

16.01.2022 The 2020 emotional rollercoaster continues... There's a possibility that massage will be allowed to resume in Melbourne next week. Hooray! BUT! It is only a possibility. Boo.... BUT! I've been taking bookings for next week and I've got a couple of spots left: 3:30 or 4pm on the 22nd (up to 90mins), and 12:30 (90mins) or 1pm (60mins) on the 24th! Hooray! BUT! We will need to reschedule if massage does not get the green light. Boo. BUT! If we do reschedule, clients with existing bookings will have first choice of appointment times when massage does start back up. Hooray! For details and to book, click the link below.

14.01.2022 Massage is back at Time & Space! Read on to find out more...

12.01.2022 I've noticed a sudden uptick in the number of people requesting massages, and it's certainly frustrating to have to say no. Our nervous systems are crying out to be settled. While we're isolating and social distancing (and while the massage industry is in lockdown), some of us, especially those living alone, are going to need to find new ways to touch and to be held. The great bodyworker, Licia Sky, has produced this wonderful guided exercise to help people to feel a sense... of safety, connection and compassion from within. I highly recommend it.

10.01.2022 An update from lockdown...

10.01.2022 I did this interview for the Association of Massage Therapists' blog about ways to manage mental health during isolation and unemployment. This is really just the tip of the iceberg, but it might be a good starting point if you're looking for help (or ways to help yourself) during these difficult times. Sending peace and strength to all my wonderful clients.

08.01.2022 This meditation is especially for people living alone during isolation, but can help anyone to capture some of the feelings we get from being out and about in society. This one is heavily indebted to meditations from the books "Mindfulness" by Mark Williams and Danny Penman and "Mindful Compassion" by Paul Gilbert and Choden. Please note: this meditation is not intended as a substitute for assistance from a mental health professional. ... Artowrk by Jen Clark of jenclarkdesign.com.au

08.01.2022 On World Suicide Prevention Day (as on every day), we need to look after each other and ourselves. One simple way to do that is to keep the following numbers somewhere readily accessible: If you are/know someone who is experiencing a mental health crisis, the number to call in Australia is Lifeline on 13 11 14.... If you are at imminent risk of harming yourself, the number to call in Australia is the Suicide Call Back Service on 1300 659 467. If you know someone who is at risk of harming themselves or others, the number to call in Australia is emergency services on 000. If you know someone who is experiencing distress related to COVID-19, Beyond Blue has a Coronavirus Mental Wellbeing Support Service, offering 24-hour phone counselling in Australia on 1800 512 348, or web chat via the link below.

07.01.2022 It's hard to believe that it was only three days ago that I was writing to let you know I'd be staying open. But a significant surge in active case numbers began that very afternoon and continued through the weekend, and I can no longer justify remaining open. I'll be watching for the numbers to go down and stay down for a while before considering reopening.... If you'd like to support Time & Space during the lockdown, please consider purchasing gift cards for friends and family (or for yourself!), via the link below, to use once things are back to normal. There's a wealth of resources on my website for managing depression and anxiety, but don't hesitate to drop me a line on 9088 8005 if I can help you manage your health in any (physically distant) way. Please stay safe and I look forward to seeing you again when the time is right. Wishing you and your loved ones only the best, Tim.

07.01.2022 My professional association has put out this remarkable tool to help massage therapists determine their preparedness to return to work. https://www.amt.org.au//AMT-return-to-practice-self-assess As you can see, there is quite a lot that massage therapists will need to do to adapt to working while COVID-19 still exists in the community. ... If you're receiving massage at the moment, I encourage you, for your own safety, to ask your therapist - before your next appointment - what they have done to mitigate the risks of spreading COVID-19, then compare their response to this checklist. That way you can make an informed choice about whether a massage with that therapist is the best option for you right now.

04.01.2022 Check out the "Pain Management Guidebook", an astonishingly good FREE new resource from The Honest Physio for anyone managing persistent pain. Covers everything you wanted to know about your pain in an accessible, thorough, evidence-informed way. Not intended as a substitute for clinical treatment, but as a very useful adjunct to it.

02.01.2022 It was delightful to be interviewed (remotely, of course) by my brilliant sister Jen for her podcast, Hosting With Heart. We talked about the things that people working in the short-term accommodation industry can do to look after their mental health during the current restrictions, but I dare say our discussion might be relevant to anyone struggling at the moment. I've included the iTunes link below, but it's also available on Spotify or on Jen's website at www.rangesescap...es.com.au/podcast . Enjoy and share away!
