22.01.2022 BACK PROBLEMS? This is one of our favourite tips to help reduce back pain. Essentially, it encourages you to stand upright (imagine a vertical line drawn from your ear through the tip of your shoulder, hip socket, knee joint and to the base of your foot). When we’re in this position, no ‘work’ is required to hold us in place. However, when we have poor posture / hunch our shoulders / etc, extra work is required to hold parts in place that aren’t stacked up vertically. That ex...tra work is performed by your muscles and tendons, and leads them to eventually become sore, tense and malfunction. Give this technique a try to help you stand straight, 'stack up' and reduce back pain STEP 1. BE PROUD AND OPEN YOUR CHEST Firstly, take a deep breath, note how you can open your chest. Your shoulders should be more in line with your spine now. STEP 2. PLACE YOUR EARS ABOVE YOUR SHOULDERS Then, bring your head back, placing your ears vertically above your shoulders. Also make sure your chin is not sticking out. STEP 3. HOLD YOUR HANDS BEHIND YOUR BACK To make it easier to keep the above posture, clasp your hands together and place them gently below your lower back. You might find the above difficult to hold or it may feel unnatural. But the more you do it, the easier it’ll get. It’s all about changing muscle memory. The actions are small and inconspicuous, so you can do them anywhere, anytime. At your desk, waiting for a bus, at a supermarket checkout or when giving a work presentation. Of course, this is just one technique. If back pain is an issue for you, we highly recommend booking an appointment with our massage therapist, Dane, as he can assess the cause of the pain and help prevent ongoing or future issues.
