22.01.2022 To overcome perceived health and safety concerns, California has created a Bill that clarifies the use of reusable containers: - The containers must be made for re-use - The containers must not touch the food serving surfaces (or surfaces need to be cleaned after) - And the business should have a written policy for their staff and health safety inspectors. ... Currently Australia has no specific laws around BYO containers which can be confusing for business owners.

21.01.2022 Check out this delivery service called Loop that picks up and refills your favorite household goods. It is so far only available in some parts of the US and Europe. It is a hopeful concept, that could work really well with consumer and manufacturer support.

18.01.2022 If youre heading to the snow fields and feeling a bit peckish, head to Saint Monday in Yackandandah on your way. Saint Monday has just eliminated its use of disposable takeaway cups completely, encouraging customers to either drink-in, bring their own reusable cup, or borrow one from the cafes growing mug library. The cafe has endeavoured reduce its waste - from making everything it can onsite to reduce packaging, to feeding food scraps to its onsite worm farm and using reusable handtowels in its bathrooms. They have a seasonal, local and largely plant-based menu which looks just delish! Find them and other great cafes & restaurants on Trashless Takeaway. https://trashlesstakeaway.com.au/listings/saint-monday/

16.01.2022 If you are a local Hobartian, or visiting for a winter getaway, be sure to check out the cosy Sweet Sassafras cafe. Their seasonable and mostly-vegetarian menu is cooked with local ingredients and they compost all food scraps. They use cloth napkins and metal straws and are cutting down on packaging waste by returning containers to suppliers for refilling. Customers can relax and enjoy their delicious food and coffee in-house, or if you are on-the-go your takeaway will be put into fully compostable packaging or your own container. What a lovely little cafe, please support them next time you are in Hobart.

13.01.2022 This is something we get asked often. "The Food Act does not set down any regulations about customers bringing their own containers when purchasing food," they said. "The purpose of the Food Act is to ensure that food sold for human consumption is free from contamination and safe to eat. However, the department said businesses can introduce their own policy banning containers- just dont incorrectly attribute it to the food standards laws. "These are arrangements that need to negotiated between the retailer and the customer."

12.01.2022 How great is this? This week, Sush in Hobart are giving away free miso soups if you BYO cup or thermos. Plus they are committed to ditching plastics from their takeaway packaging. Its fantastic to see plastic-free behaviour being rewarded :) #trashlesstakeaway

04.01.2022 A good article on The Guardian... and a reminder that reusing plastic containers might not be great for our health. Some good tips within the article: Switch to glass or metal containers if possible... Avoid heating plastic containers in the microwave and dishwasher (especially old single-use plastic takeaway containers!) Dont use scratched or discoloured plastic containers Dont store fatty or oily foods in plastic (many chemicals used in plastic are fat soluble and can leach into fatty foods) If you plan to ditch your old plastic containers try to give them a new life in your garden shed for plant seeds, nuts & bolts, etc.

02.01.2022 Interesting research from Japan. Future innovations like this, together with reducing the amount of plastics actually produced, might help fix this plastic mess weve got ourselves into.
