15.01.2022 On this day in 1899, a troop of the NSW Lancers were involved in one of a series of defeats suffered by British-led troops in South Africa in the opening months... of the Second Boer War. The NSW Lancers were the first Australian troops to reach South Africa. The Battle of Graspan (also known as the Battle of Enslin) was fought between a British-led force of 8,500 men against a Boer force numbering around 2,500. Faulty intelligence led to a frontal attack by the Naval brigade against the Boer positions on high ground, with the NSW Lancers being sent around the Boer right flank with some other mounted troops. At one point, the NSW Lancers saved some British cavalry who were being ridden down by mounted Boers. Total British casualties were 17 dead and 168 wounded. Lest we forget.
