16.01.2022 Greening Australia has released the first of three park re-designs to help cool some of Perth’s most heat-stressed suburbs.

15.01.2022 It’s just not natural! Creating dead earth underneath, heating up the environment, certainly not the water saver it’s claimed to be! If a 1 litre plastic bottle takes 10 litres of water to be made, how much water is used to make a square metre of plastic grass? A lot! It’s not only the plastic that’s an issue, it’s the rubber tyre crumbs within that also cause harm to the environment and apparently to human and animal health. This is in our view, is a sound and sensible decis...ion. Creating excellent soil health and soil moisture retention affords natural, living plants such as turf, the opportunity to provide a multitude of benefits more profound than plastic grass can ever claim. Well maintained irrigated turf is proven as the best urban cooling surface (refer to link below). 100% cover of the planet with natural, living grasses, plants, shrubs and trees is the ideal to keep the planet healthy and cool, for survival. 15.01.2022 This site is a living lab for a new and ongoing research project Lawn as a cultural and environmental global phenomenon in Perth, WA. Searching for sustainable solutions in most vulnerable times of climate change and pandemics running at the UWA School of Design. The foundation of this project is an interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers and landscape architecture practitioners, the turf industry, and state and local governmental departments. This experimental ...site demonstrates the complex character of lawns as plant communities and shows the aesthetic parameters of different lawn species traditionally used in WA such as Buffalo, Couch, and Kikuyu grasses. The living lab will exhibit a ‘lawn gradient’ from artificial turf to traditional irrigated and cut lawn, non-irrigated ‘brown’ lawns and ‘spontaneous lawns’ (abandon ground left for spontaneous natural processes) through to ground cover lawn alternatives (native and exotic species). A mow kerb will separate each of the 2mx2m plots. To illustrate the urban heat island effect and the role of lawn and ground vegetation in cooling urban environments, each plot will have a surface temperature gauge. This project has been developed by renowned researcher Dr Maria Ignatieva Professor of Landscape Architecture Head of Department (Architecture, Landscape Architecture + Urban Design), UWA School of Design and her Landscape Architecture students as an ongoing project with the intention of extending the project out into the community here in WA, and also into the Eastern states. Daily heat measurements are being taken onsite. It was profoundly interesting to see the synthetic temperature reach 38 degrees celsius last Thursday, which was a relatively cool day, of about 20 degrees. The TGAWA is delighted to be a contributed to this project and looks forward with keen interest to the long term findings of this project. Congratulations to Dr Maria Ignatieva and her team for getting this project off the ground in difficult times. Thanks to our member farm, WEST COAST TURF for the supply and installation of the turf for this project. #research #turf #project #community #heartisland #Lawn #plants #cooling See more

10.01.2022 Funny radio interview with eastern states turf farmer Graham Collis from Dad & Dave’s Turf farm in NSW, who coordinated the returfing of the Dunedoo Golf Course last week, (post complete vandalisation of the course). A mighty effort coordinated by Graham and a team of NSW Turf growers who supplied to turf, equipment and labour to install about 32,000 m2 of turf over three days in absolutely dismal conditions. A great true blue moment in time. Dunedoo Golf Club mightily appreciated this effort and the generosity of all those growers, many of whom had recently faced their own challenges with flooding. Congratulations to all involved. A wonderful community effort. #goodonyou #generosity #soaustralian #greenspaces #greatindustry #turf #golf #community https://www.2gb.com/bidder-leaves-dunedoo-golf-club-fundra/

10.01.2022 Congratulations to Bec Sellick who is now Chairperson of Turf Australia Chairperson after being elected at last weeks AGM. Bec is the first female and the second Western Australian to be voted in as Chairperson of the national turf body. Something to be very proud of! This photo of Bec and Darren Kirkwood was taken at the WA Turf Awards evening last week. Darren is the Turf Growers Association WA Chairperson. I am very proud of them both. They are great, selfless contributors... to the WA and national turf industries. I'm usually on the other side of the camera, so it was a real pleasure to have this photo taken with two wonderful industry personalities who work hard every day for all turf producers. WA sends a huge shout of respect and gratitude to Ross Boyle for his years of hard work and dedication to the role of Turf Australia Chairperson over the past few years. Thank you Ross, for your commitment to the industry and everything that you did for growers in your tenure ship. #loveyourlawn #turf #Chairperson #leadership #industryleaders #westernaustralia #perthisok #turfgrass #thankyou See more

09.01.2022 We did it again! Another great WA Turf Seminar and Trade Show. Check out some of our boys, Darren from WEST COAST TURF, Adrian from Greenacres Turf Group, Graeme from AG Buffalo Turf Supplies and Con from Westland Turf, who spent the morning helping out prior for the seminar portion of the day. Their assistance was valuable and appreciated. Thanks also to Darren Kirkwood for undertaking the role of MC today. Good work Darren.

07.01.2022 Lawns and Bush fire - Lawn wins again!!!! A recent study has found that natural turf and fire-wise greenlife can protect properties from risk of fires during bu...shfire season. Natural turf has been found to be beneficial in protecting homeowners and business-owners properties from fires, according to recent research conducted by GHD and CSIRO and commissioned by Hort Innovation for Turf Australia. The study found that samples of three of the most common types of grass in Australian households: buffalo, couch and kikuyu are all highly resistant to ignition by embers, with even dead turf under severe moisture stress proving difficult to ignite in ignition experiments conducted at the CSIRO’s Pyrotron facility in Canberra. The study saw repeated attempts to light the three species of grass under typical bushfire season conditions. Various wind speeds were tested as were different levels leaf-blade moisture, achieved through naturally drying the turf, and even oven-drying to test extreme low moisture conditions. Leaf-blade moisture is expressed in ‘Oven Dried Weight’ (ODW) which refers to the amount of water in the sample as a percentage of its oven-dried weight. No live samples sustained ignition. Paul de Mar, Natural resources and bushfire management consultant with GHD said the findings are clear and unequivocal. These findings tell us that watered and mowed live turf lawns are not combustible under natural conditions associated with bushfires. Even lawns that are drought-stressed but provided with just enough watering to keep them alive, are highly unlikely to ignite and sustain fire spread. Essentially, for a lawn to ignite and sustain fire spread it needs to be dead and subject to extremely low moisture content, he said. Similarly, it backs up the long-held operational knowledge of firefighters; that lawns are useful both to mitigate fire spread, and for providing defendable space near houses. Lawns and walkways are a form of firebreak, which interrupt the path of surface fire spread they can’t stop airborne embers, but they can provide defendable space from where such embers can be safely put out. "The role of greenlife and turf in fire-wise design creating defendable space cannot be understated. 04.01.2022 Bore water users, please note this message from Department of Water and Environmental Regulation Winter is here, so the sprinkler switch off is now in effect. If you live in the indicated areas, you need to switch off until 31 August. Evaporation rates are low in winter and there is usually enough rainfall to sustain lawns and gardens. Water being used on lawns and gardens in winter is a waste of this valuable resource. The winter sprinkler switch off aims to prevent this was...tage and save water for the hotter, drier months.
