22.01.2022 HDR Student of the Week: Introducing Wilson Luu, a doctoral student working in the areas of low vision and visual perception in patients with age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma using advanced tracking systems and virtual reality devices with Prof Michael Kalloniatis, Dr Juno Kim and Dr Barbara Zangerl. Wilson is exploring how vision loss impacts self-motion in order to provide solutions for improving orientation and mobility. He was a recipient of the Asia-Pacific Conference on Vision Travel Award in 2019 held in Osaka, Japan. To find out more about Wilson and his research, see here: https://bit.ly/3isqdnZ . . 22.01.2022 Higher Degree Student of the Week: Introducing Melinda Toomey, PhD candidate, whose research is on Improving the Appropriateness of Australian Glaucoma Eyecare Delivery with A/Prof Isabelle Jalbert, Prof Fiona Stapleton, and Prof Lisa Keay. Research shows that there is a gap between what is known (best evidence) and the care provided by clinicians. Melinda’s PhD research investigates the determinants that influence glaucoma care delivery and seeks to design a tailored intervention to improve the appropriateness of glaucoma care delivery by Australian optometrists. Melinda has recently been accepted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. To find out more about Melind and her research see here: https://bit.ly/2Kwtnem

21.01.2022 Early Career Researcher of the Month: Meet Dr Pauline Kang. Pauline is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Optometry and Vision Science leading the Schools research in myopia. Her research aims to identify why children become myopic, and to improve current interventions prescribed to slow myopia progression. Pauline also coordinates the Myopia Clinic (https://www.optometry.unsw.edu.au/optometry-c/myopia-clinic) to not only provide a dedicated service to myopic patients, but to teach evidence-based myopia management to undergraduate Optometry and Vision Science students. 06.01.2022 A team of SOVS academic researchers led by A/Prof Sieu Khuu travelled to Narooma on the NSW east coast last weekend in an effort to engage with the SES on the science of finding things in the Australian bush. Rugged terrain and variation in the type and density of foliage pose real challenges in the task of visually searching for evidence when searching for those who have been lost and need to be found. The researchers (A/Prof Sieu Khuu, Dr Vanessa Honson and Dr Juno Kim) met with officials of the area command and will continue to engage through experimental research that will hopefully inform best practice in coordinating searches to optomise the likelihood of their success in future.
